How would I do this? I think I know how to get the fire to go straight, but I need a hex editor, and I want it to go really fast.

I'd probably only do this after the rest of the hack is complete.


Also, how to change Mario's sprite to make him hold a gun when he gets the flower? And to change the flower to a gun? Obviously I need the sprites.

Or is it impossible.

Well...

straight fireballs -> asmhacking. You'd have to disable vertical movement for the fireballs or just keep their Y pos. constant.

gun holding -> heavy ASMhacking. Flower mario differs from normal mario only on the palette. You'd have to change that.

flower->gun -> extract all graphics to a joined GFX file (using LM) and look up the flower in YY-CHR (switch to 2bit gameboy mode, as SMW's screenmode uses only 2 bits of colour on BG3). Change it to the gun and reinsert the GFX. Done. Now wasn't that easy

if you want me to, I could do the first one for you in a week (that's when I get an access to a computer other than an internet cafe again); but the second one exceeds my current possibilities. Ask BMF, probably.

There's a byte to do that straight fire thing. Don't remember it; however; Fu should be able to tell you. No need to ASM Hack.

You'd have to rip the sprites yourself, or hand-draw them. Shouldn't be too hard.

You can't do a thing about holding a gun when he gets the flower item, but what you can do is to go into AllGFX.bin (ALWAYS use this if you're going to edit tiles directly), and look near the bottom of the file. Above the Yoshi sprites are the Mario tiles, you can't miss it. Find the Fire Flower shooting animation and edit it. The only difficult part is a hand tile that likes to pop up in front of your edited tiles and block it out. Find these and delete them, or edit them to show the gun.

But your main issue that you ***WILL*** have trouble with is the auto-re flip of the fire flower. It's animation is to flip horozontally, and with a gun, that looks like crap.

auto reflip -> you can asmhack that back into hell quite easily.

I counted three unused colors in Mario's pallete. You might be able to use a trick I always advocate doing: changing graphics and hiding the changes untill wanted via pallete tricks. I think you could manage to stick a gun in his pocket, make it the color of his clothes in his normal pallete, and make it gun collored in his fire flower pallet. Add that to what asdf suggested in his post, and it could be rather convincing.

To fix the flower animation, you could use a custom block that gives him flower power and turns into air. I'm fairly sure one exists. However, this wouldn't let you get it out of item boxes, and you'd still need a falling gun with the animation problem when you use item boxes. Maybe it could be made to look like it was spinning in midair, or something.
