When I was in the IB program, we only had summer reading lists to complete. Each year we were given a list of books (between 30-50 depending on the level) and then had to choose 3-4 to read. Now, I forget the assignment we had to do... I think we had to write an in-class essay about one of them shortly after summer vacation.

I'm taking a summer class now, so at least I can't complain about getting small assignments/take home exams out of nowhere.

Just between you and me boy, there isn't much of a booty to begin with. I read TKGW. I actually didn't think it was too bad. I like to read thinking more about the writing style used than the opinion. I mean I agree that there is a lot of feminism still going on around, something that I'd like to end, but I also agree that reading books that have few differences(set in 1800s-early 1900s, main character is a wife who has her interests in different places) is not a good way to expose the reader to new ideas that are believed to be "foreign" and "unknown".(which they really aren't) The only book that I have really been able to enjoy for summer reading is To Kill a Mockingbird. I sat and read that book for hours on end, even though I am a slow reader. I too have the same assignment as Silvershield, and I think Jarukoth as well. Plus, I don't think our teacher would mind if I read a bit of sci-fi or fantasy for our "free choice" .

When I was back in school, I had at least two or three essays to write over each break You've got plenty of time to do it, so quit complaining

Besides, once you start work, you won't get a summer break Oh, the horror!

Yea, I'm taking a college course right now. It's not too bad, but when I think about it, my friend and I take about extra five hours due to travel. (gotta take a bus and train to and from) It's crazy because the place is only like a 45 minute drive. (since I gotta wake up early, and I can't drive, I gotta take the train) But the class is very interesting; it's Civilization and Disease.

Anyhow, this is the second year in the row where I'm assigned a piece of feminist trash to trudge through. Last year was The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan, and I didn't even pick it up. I simply accepted a poor grade. This year, it's The Awakening.

Now, let me make something clear: I have not read every book in the world. Heck, I haven't read one percent of them. But, judging solely on the merits of what I have seen, I think I can safely state that The Awakening is the worst book ever written.

Geez, I didn't even start The Awakening yet. I'm scared now. Oh, and for the record, I didn't think TKGW was all that bad (for a school assignment anyway), considering she's the most politically correct feminist teacher I've ever had..

Sure, there's a lot of work involved for an advanced class, but as far as I am concerned, her booty the payoff keeps me motivated...

Man, I missed this. The Awakening sucks ass, simply on the basis that the main character throws a perfectly good life into the gutter for some flighty fun and an affair with a hustler. It's not love, it's not happiness, it's lust and cheating, and Kate Chopin advocates dishonesty. That's just not right in my opinion, I have no problem with differing affection, but it really seemed to me that she just glorified having an affair. I found that really wrong, especially when you're cheating on someone who's done nothing wrong, like the husband in the story. And considering how the feminist movement is all about women's empowerment and being able to trust and accept them, I doubt a book where a woman steps outside the boundaries of marriage for some irresponsible fun is gonna help. However, my English teacher showed me that I was being single minded and that I should have concentrated more on the fact that she was able to step out in a society that kept women in. I said it happened over 100 years ago and that I didn't care now. I passed English with an A that quarter.

Summer Reading blows, I read way too much in my spare time to be bothered with reading some required book that I probably won't be tested on anyway.

That sounds kind of familiar. Oh! I get it. I bet that me and subliminal can think of a girl who treats her love life like that. And everyone involved in it.

I think the worst I've had was a 368 page book to read (and then work to do about it) during Christmas break, and not a bad one either, so I had real summer breaks

But now at university, the longest breaks I've gotten since September 2002 are barely 1-2 weeks, I even have summer school right now (and a lot of homework due this week) ... but it's all computer science and related subjects now, no more books and essays

And to think, I still have yet to read that. I was actually planning on it, too. And I'm afraid I can do you one better on the worst book ever part. Well, in a manner of speaking anyway.

Ever read Pat Conroy's The Lords Of Discipline? Crap on a stick. The entire first three quarters of the book sucks, and it's only after one of the worst girls I've ever come upon in literature leaves the story does it even begin to get good. it's about the Carolina Military Institute, and this guy that goes there. At that point some stuff about how he needs to protect a guy from being discriminated against because he's the first black student in the school happens, and you're given the possibility of it being good. Then suddenly they fool you on what the plot really is about, and introduce said lady into the story, who turns out to be a heart-ruining debutante bitch. Eventually there's some badly written and untasteful sex, some fighting, and when she finally leaves the story, THEN they have the nerve to go back to the original, and considerably more engaging, plot. That's when it gets a bit better, but the whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth, considering the part with the evil girl sucks away about two thirds of the whole book. Don't read it, or better yet read a bootleg version with about half the pages ripped out. I guarantee, you won't be missing much.
