Not sure if I should place it in this forum, but Gamecube is an console. So...
http://www.gc-linux.org/

I found that intresting, think of the possibles... running an Gamecube as an server. Playing on Linux games/emulators.

Now it's far from finished, but it's really intresting. It's not using any disc at all! The sale of broadband adaptors and Phantasy star online will increase.

Wow... Imaginr the capabilities of the GameCube once production on that is finished...

Yet another reason as to why I should get a gamecube for my birthday... I almost regret getting an Xbox now .

There is also Linux for X-box.
http://www.xbox-linux.org/

Althought it's alot more risky to run Linux on an X-box than on a Gamecube. Mainly becuse Linux can't screw up Gamecube, but the Linux for X-box can screw up the x-box harddrive.

wow, that rocks! I don't think it would be a good idea to attempt it on the Xbox though.. It would be a bit pricey if it screwed up the hard drive, too much of a risk if you ask me.

That's just... crazy. Who the hell would want to use their gamecube as that... weird. I wonder if this means you could use the Gamecube for other things.....

Things like this are far from new

You can back up games on you PC's hard drive, then wire it to your GC.

Hmm... I thaught it was new... And I would find it quite helpful if I were to get it...

And it's on Xbox too? Wow... I win both ways .

Not surprising to see it for the Xbox. You can heavily mod Xbox's, slap in a new hardrive, turn it into a media studio, burn games to the hardrive, put in emulators. It's quite nice.

YEah... But didn't Bill Gates announce something along the lines of you can get sued for around $250,000 if your Xbox has been found tampered...

That's what scares me for sending my Xbox away to get funky mods...

One reason why i'm going to test Linux.

Not that is gonna happen, any cases of Microsoft suing people for "modding"?

Whoa Whoa Whoa!! Hold it! How the hell do you do that?

I read the xbox linux site....

...doing something like that w/GC should prove to be a lot harder because it lacks the capability to play CDs and other stuff. Also, I don't know if you can store things on the GC like you can with Xbox. You guys probably know more about that than I.

No, you can't store that much on it. You transfer from the PC to the GC at the same time that you are playing. That's how it works with games at least, I don't know about Linux.

Not many people CAN play burned GCN games... Isn't it possible though? I know it's a far way off but since they can rip the games...

Dolphin can run a few GCN games at good speed though. 2D ones mainly, but still.

Personally... I don't see why you would want to put an OS on your game system.

I know it has its pros and cons, but your PC is CUSTOMIZABLE, so you can make it however you want, and put linux on that. Still, how is Linux on XBox/Gamecube/PS2/PS1/Atari useful?

I'm not against it, I just don't know how it's useful or helpful.

maybe because video game systems are essentially computers? as a result, if you need a computer upgrade, why not?

anyways, a succesful burn of a GCN game, i don't think it will ever happen until someone can reverse engineer the CD the game comes on...

Yeah... consoles are essentially powerful budget computers, so if you can get an OS working on it, more power to ya...

Yeah, all of the recent MS stuff is making me really not consider the Next-Box...

No HD, the support for the X-Box is getting steadily worse, plans on upping Live subscriptions. I think I might go PS3 or something next round

Becuse you can, it's that simple. But I wonder if you can run emulators for Linux on gamecube soon...

At least I hope that emulation whatsoever will be possible soon on GCN. There have been some devolopment on "free things" for GCN.

Well, part of the reason they put Linux on X-Box was to stick it to Microsoft. But generally, it's a "cause you can" thing. It's a technical challenge for people. First for the people who actually get/create a distro to work on the device, and secondly for those people who want to see if they can install it.

It's like a lot of weird tech things, case mods, and all of that. There's no real reason, its always "cause you can"
