Penny Arcade is so utterly overrated it's insane. Yes, it's funny, no denying that, but the best webcomic? Hardly. If it wasn't for their newsposts it wouldn't be looked at as much as it is. The comics themselves are often rather childish and regularly repeat the same set up and the same basic joke. It's all rather self-indulgent.

Now, for the best webcomic (note specifically a webcomic, so Calvin & Hobbes can't play a part), I'd say it's one of these lot...

8-Bit Theatre
El Goonish Shive
Ozy & Millie
Megatokyo
VGCats

All those comics are very different and in my opinion represent the top of their genre. 8-Bit is definitely one of the best and well loved sprite comics there is, El Goonish has got to be at the top of the plot-based weird fantasy/comedy genre (which is surprisingly active), Ozy & Millie is practically a newspaper comic that's just online, Megatokyo is a classic and well loved (great art, too)...

And I threw VGCats in there because it's hilarious and as comics relating specificially to video games go, it's funnier than Penny Arcade.

As for syndicated comics, there's Calvin & Hobbes, Dilbert, Get Fuzzy (frickin' brilliant), Zits and The Far Side. There's more, but those are my favourites. They're class.

Really? I'm tired of people saying "ITS JUST WANG AND FUCK JOKES OMG" over and over. Well, let's look at some other comics you mentioned:

8-Bit Theatre

Fighter: I like swords.
BM: Grr I hate you.
Red Mage: Let's roll a d20 to see if you hate him.
Thief: *with everyone's gil* Yoink.

El Goonish Shive

Dan: Since I'm so bent on changing people into cat-like humanoids or making them female, I'll base a whole comic around it.
Tedd: Ha, you're an animal/female.
Ellen: Well, you're ALL female.

Ozy & Millie

I've seen better in the paper.

Megatokyo

Piro: Let's go to Japan
Largo: Whoops, I spent all the money on beer (and prostitutes).
Piro: What?
DEAD PIRO DAY
Largo: I said I spent all the money on beer.
Piro: Great, now we're stuck here while I ogle hot japanese girls.
DEAD PIRO DAY

VGCats

Leo: I'm smart.
Aeris: You're retarded.
Krug: I eat you all.

Now, as you can tell by looking at the aove, all of them have their own repetitiveness. Go ahead and say that they don't repeat like the examples I've given you, and for every example you give me, I will show you twice as many Penny-Arcade strips that don't have the same punchline/joke.

By the way, I read every single comic mentioned in my post minus Ozy and Millie.

*Shakes her head* Did you not hear me? What was it I said that quite required that childish response? Honestly, ANYONE can take ANYTHING and simplify it so it looks stupid.

I SAID I thought Penny Arcade was funny. I am a FAN of Penny Arcade. I just believe people HAVE to admit that it's overrated and that it does use a very similar set up virtually all the time. Hell, they've admitted it themselves.

Tycho: Random comment about contemporary gaming.
Gabe: Linking contemporary gaming news with something obscure and irrelivant.
Tycho: Disgusted insult.
Gabe: Reluctant or accidental self-defamatory comment and/or rage involving axes.

I never said 'ITS JUST WANG AND FUCK JOKES OMG'. It's not. But it's certainly not hugely intelligent humor most of the time. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just that most of the comics follow the same or a very similar premise so it sort of gets old. They don't throw anything new into it. Occasionally though they have some real classics. As for your comments on the other comics...

Fighter: I like swords.
BM: Grr I hate you.
Red Mage: Let's roll a d20 to see if you hate him.
Thief: *with everyone's gil* Yoink.

Yes, you've got their basic personalities down, well done, but what makes the comic funny is the fact that he changes the situations they're in and it's amusing to see the way their personalities react in different situations.

Dan: Since I'm so bent on changing people into cat-like humanoids or making them female, I'll base a whole comic around it.
Tedd: Ha, you're an animal/female.
Ellen: Well, you're ALL female.

Pile of rubbish. The comic isn't like that at all if you'd actually *read* any worthwhile amount of it. Doesn't really sound like you have. I must note at this point that I've read every single Penny Arcade comic.

I've seen better in the paper.

We weren't talking about the paper. By the same token, I've seen *alot* worse in the paper. Your point?

Piro: Let's go to Japan
Largo: Whoops, I spent all the money on beer (and prostitutes).
Piro: What?
DEAD PIRO DAY
Largo: I said I spent all the money on beer.
Piro: Great, now we're stuck here while I ogle hot japanese girls.
DEAD PIRO DAY

Oh, trust me, I hate Dead Piro Days too, I'm not a massive fan of Megatokyo, but it has a huge following and has influenced internet culture. Plus, the plot's rather moved away from the whole 'spent all money, looks like we're stuck here' thing. That's in the background.

Leo: I'm smart.
Aeris: You're retarded.
Krug: I eat you all.

Krug's not in many of the comics, and while the whole 'Leo is dumb, Aeris is smart and insults him' thing is played on in quite a few comics, that's not the main point. In fact, Leo's on his own in many of the comics and the funny part is the parodies, not that Leo is dumb. Although that's funny too.

And I've read every single EGS comic. I know of when Hedge mistook Elliot for being Grace. I know of when Ellen defeated the evil blob by using her Venus Ray that she got from the gem. Don't say I haven't read it.

When I said that, I was pointing out that it was like a newspaper comic, both quality-wise and joke-wise.

I would also like to mention that, of all the comics you mentioned, the only one whose archives I haven't fully read was OaM. I'm big fans of the others, though. My post was to show you that Penny-Arcade isn't exactly the only one with the same thing happening over and over.

Fair enough, fair enough, my point was just that Penny Arcade *seems* to do it more often. Maybe it's because it's pointed out more often (even by themselves, like I said), or maybe I've simply grown tired of the humor, personally.

I was rather annoyed about what you said about El Goonish Shive, though, because out of all those simplifications, I'd have to say that's definitely the most innaccurate. It's character-based humour with the occasional TF-based joke, but it certainly doesn't revolve around the TF stuff. Plus it rocks. No dissin' the Shive, aye.

"Fighter: I like swords." You know...everytime he says/you read that, the guys who made the 8-bit comics gets 1 dollar...
