I was watching a Discovery Channel program this afternoon about the effects of an operation to cure epilepsy... It envolves removing an area of the brain that sits directly between the two lobes of the brain.

The operation completely erradicated any seisures from the patients, but some extremely disturbing side effects began to become apparent after the patients recovered.

The patients had decreased control over their left hands. This isn't particularly strange until you see that the patient's left hands are erratic, uncontrolable, and disturbingly sentient at times.

In experients done on hidden camera, a patient was asked to answer a yes/no question and answer it by pointing to "yes" or "no" written on a board. The hands contradicted each other. One would point to yes, and the other would point to no. If the patient tried harder to point out "yes", the other hand would forcibly move the hand to point to no, totally unintentionally.

This amazing phenomenon is caused by the two lobes of the brain not being able to communicate with each other, as the area of brain removed is an "information super highway" of signals between the two lobes of the brain.

Doctors think that because the brain is asymetrical in function, each lobe is more dominant in certain functions than the other. The left lobe is unable to manifest itself in the concious and unable to express itself, yet it is still alive, it can only act in ways such as the independent operation of the left arm.

The left lobe of the brain, it would seem, is harbouring a seperate and independent indentity- another personality.

I find this really, really creepy... Not large spider or scorpion creepy, but genunine, heeby-jeebies, soul troubling frightening.
The independent personality is thought to manifest itself in a normally functioning brain through partial subconcious actions. I definately know that at times that I've caught myself doing strange things when I switch off, and I know that there's more than one side to my thinking and my behaviour.

This is what makes it so scary... That such a frightening thing can happen to the fragile sense of self, yet you can feel the presence of both the brain and the mind's structure in normal waking life.

I really find anything to do with the mind and personality really disturbing. It's scary that my sense of self, my soul, is so fragile, that it is finite and by no means certain.

Any thoughts on this bizarre phenomnenon, or anything else that is really, really creepy?

I don't really think it is a true alternate personallity. I just think that it is what happens with the lack of the brains communicating like it says. Plus I think it is the left lobe controls the right part of your body and the right lobe controls the left part of your body.

I remember reading about this in my brothers psych. books. It was quite interesting. I dont exactly remember anything that stood out, but I do remember something about an experiment. A picture would be shown to the left eye and then he would have no recollection of seeing it at all when shown to the right eye. This led to evidence that the left side of the brain and the right side control one specific side of the body.

You can really talk about split personality here. And your not the only one who finds it creepy.

After finding out what lobotomy was... let's say I got very frightened after hearing that. That people even can do such...

O_o

Congratulations. You have scarred me for life. Or something. That's some scary stuff. The most disturbing thing I have read to date, in fact.

Haha, I remember when I asked what Lobotomy was at the board and got an answer from Fyxe, I think...

You mean that the hand can suddenly hit a person, Kasumi? Those surgeries can

I think that any surgeries that mess with the brain are screwed up.

The hand has a sinister life of it's own... The actions can get quite violent, and yes, the hand of one patient has actually tried to suffocate them once.

The stranger side to this is that patients prefer this existence to the painful fits experienced with epilepsy

That's not too surprising. Your left hand probably won't try to kill you, but you can die from a prolonged seizure. Or, if you go to a really terrible hospital, you could get shot by some police officers thinking you're crazy when in fact you're just having a seizure :p </subtle reference to why Pacific Gateway closed down>

I had a mild form of epilepsy when I was younger -- don't know why, but it just went away after a couple years.
It's not much of a picnic... an uncle of mine also had epilepsy and nearly swallowed his tongue in his sleep because of a seizure.

Don't ask me.
That's what I heard from my parents about it.

Did he have a fake tongue, or did he bite off his tongue during the seizure, or... I'd just like to know the circumstances, because, I can't see someone swallowing their tongue... It's just... Weird...

...The toungue can hang back when the head is tilted far back, and block the airway. It isn't literally swallowed, it just sinks back and blocks the air.

That would make a lot more sense, for certain. Why's it called swallowing your tongue, then?

My dad has epilipsy and in recent weeks its gotten worse, Id' say mainly because of stress. Its scary as hell though when he has a seizure there no violent shaking, he just goes out of it and stares off into space for a second. Then when he comes out he remembers nothing.

This has happened while hwas driving and walking both which ended not so greatly...

That's very similar to what I had.
My vision would totally black out, and I'd usually end up unconscious on the floor.

I'm just glad I don't (seem to) have it anymore... it wasn't nice.
