Majority of my audio goes to Winamp 5.03a. Video goes to DivX player or Media Player Classic.

I normally use Winamp 5 for all of my music stuff, some videos, not all of them. It works pretty well

If anyone's using Winamp 3... *cocks gun*

Winamp 5 for me. Stable and easy to use. For some movie files I'll use WMP though.

Don't forget to cock the, er, insanely large cluster of WOMD for the Real-player users. You know, the ones that use software from a company that cheats its users into buying overdimensioned solutions when all they want is a free player. The company that internally rated web site designs on their ability to do just that. Read these articles.

Are there any alternatives to Real Player (plugins, codecs, etc.) out there?

I remember reading those articles... geez. Sad thing is that there's some good stuff to listen to via RP but lots of sites are gravitating towards WMP now. Even the BBC, which has used RP for ages.

Jesper - Thanks for the fascinating links. I'd heard bits and pieces about Real's asshattery (and been irritated by the way it ate my file associations when I didn't know enough about Windows to figure out how to fix that), but I didn't know that they were quite that insidious.

Colleen - mplayer has a beta Windows build, and it will decode RealAudio and RealVideo if it can find the right codecs.

The open source lookalike project "Media Player Classic" looks and functions almost identically to Windows Media Player as pre the strangely-shaped-window days of WMP7 and forward, but it supports an AMAZING amount of codecs out of the box. RealPlayer, Xvid, Div-X, QuickTime, most stuff you can throw at it. And if what you're throwing at it won't play, it will go online and look for the stuff using data from your file. Very, very cool, and also one of the major reasons I don't use WinAmp - MPC features a broader range of codecs for video files, and, well, you all know what I use for audio.

Excellent, guys. I'll take a look at it.

(I came so close to installing RP a week or so ago... but decided against it quickly.)

And the sad thing in them leaving a truly evil company's proprietary technology for a slightly less evil company's proprietary technology is? As a user, I'd rather have WMP than RA and in fact most other players any day. It's really quite good, but it's not the best.

I've always hated Windows Media Player and all of its versions. Especially it's GUI.

But if MPC is better at video support.... I guess I'll use it despite the ugly GUI.

I use Winamp 5.01 Pro (Go piracy!) for music and video. Because for some weird reason, whenever I install movie support for Winamp the video in WMP dies. It just gives sound but not screen. :\ And uninstalling Winamp doesn't fix this and I'm too lazy to reinstall the huge WMP.

Yea, that's why I put that in my post.

I remember Kwan also using it...I just found it after trying to look for a WMP 6.4 and not finding it...and then when I tried Googling for it I found it lying around so I was like...okay...let's see how this runs.

Impressed the hell out of me...that's for sure.
