Alright, alright. We can't be going around like this today. We all gotta respect every fellow nation's birth into the world here. I know that some people have their head up their ass at times about how great their nation is, but we can't also be so spiteful towards each other. Legion says it's the greatest probably because he's very comfortable living here. I don't think he's really saying that the US is a nation that is the best overall, as I can say the same myself. I'm just thankful I'm living on a piece of land inside an apartment building with little worries. So yeah, happy Independence Day and watch out for those fireworks! Yeah, you might blow your arm off. | |||

And currently, I'm enjoying that freedom without a side of Patriot Act. When is the Swedish equivilent of American Independence Day? Also, I am Canadian, our Birthday was July 1, not that far apart. Remember to only buy the big fireworks, the small ones may seem cool becuase they fit in your pocket, but most of the time they suck! |

"No, but the percentage of your nutcases far outnumber the percentage of our nutcases." Proove it. I want to see numbers and statistics. I know that you've never even been over here before so you probably get your impression of Americans off of what people say on the internet or what you see on tv shows. Unless you just assume that we have more because we have a higher population. |

Well, if it's proportional... Then yes, Americans > Swedes. But by that logic you could say that there's more Indians or Chinese who share those same sentiments, so then you're not the worst off. |

Anyway, I hope all the Americans had a good time yesterday, it's always fun to celebrate. |

Huh? No, I'm saying that you shouldn't assume anything because there's just no way of knowing for sure. Just because we're "well known" for it doesn't mean we have the worst problem of it. Saying that Americans are arrogant when it comes to their patriotism is just another one of those big stereotypes. There's one or more for every country and they're rarely true. Actually, I think none of them are true. (edited by Legion on 07-05-04 03:46 PM) |

Originally posted by LegionI'd like to see you DIS-prove it for once. I know from chats with people over there that a whole lot of republicans are insanely patriotic like this, and I also know from chats with people all over Sweden that almost noone is insanely patriotic. True, noone will ever know the whole and entire truth. Yes, I get a few of these impressions of Americans off what people tell me on the internet. That's because they live there, and I don't, and I'd like to know what's happening over there. It's a pretty central function of the internet. The short version of this is that I'm pretty confident that a fair chunk of the republicans (for example) are more or less insanely patriotic. Not only do the TV, paper and logical conclusion say it, but I also have people living in those neighborhoods (20-30 of them throughout the years) whining to me about how over-patriotic everything is. I've had atleast five of these people telling me how they'd like to live somewhere else. Since those people have been spread pretty evenly throughout the country, and also taking into account personal experience and likewise daily interaction with a lot of Swedish people also spread all over the land, it's not an explicitly bad conclusion that "the percentage of your nutcases far outnumber the percentage of our nutcases." And for the record: I've never stated you were the biggest on this. China are probably bigger offenders. I've just stated you were bigger than the average. "Saying that Americans are arrogant when it comes to their patriotism is just another one of those big stereotypes. There's one or more for every country and they're rarely true. Actually, I think none of them are true." There's a big stereotype about this, but it has some basis in reality. The stereotype blows the number of these people way out of proportion (10-20% of the US), but there is still a truth to it. We're speaking fractions of even one thousanth of the US, but it's still a far larger number than most other countries. TSZ also said some great stuff. It doesn't matter if all southeners are crackpot patriots and no northeners are - you still add up to one country, and it's that country's percentage we're comparing. Don't spam. Jesper: But that's what the media in other countries projects to us. I know that the Canadian media puts that radical spin on it, and it ends up producing hatred towards the States. I'm sure it's the same in other countries aside from a few strong allies (Britain?). |

Originally posted by ColleenI've seen in mentioned a not insignificant amount of times in american media too, it's pretty consistent with other countries, even if there are ofcourse people hating the US for no appearent reason. There's no sensationalism behind this, however the subject lends itself to making the people who do like their country but who are not fucking crackpots about it get upset, because they think we're refering to them. The real crackpots don't listen to the arguments, they just rampantly pimp their country and quite possibly are condescending towards anyone trying to tell them any different. I'm not thinking it's strange that things have gone this way, by the way; the early years of the US was enduring a lot of "our country is so great and free, oh and by the way, UK suck". The US certainly had groundbreaking laws, claiming that everyone was equal 250 years back was no easy feat, and there are still people that have their heads up their asses enough to believe that skin color or nose size or whatever make people dumber or eviler. But most of the rest of the world - in any case most of the rest of the world that the americans left in going to the US - have caught up. The US is not the greatest country ever, and lots of people are having a hard time accepting that. |
