I have a new computer too, but I've had it for a few weeks now.

It's an iBook G4. (Apple Macintosh). I likes it lotsly.

I still have my Pentium 4 too I should give that a CPU uprade sometime soon, while they still make faster CPU's with that FSB.

Dell: Buy a custom built computer with the best parts available, suited for your needs!

Translation: Get your choice of what ugly crappy parts should make up a complete computer setup that was old yesterday and won't fit your needs more than anything else.

Macs may be expensive, but that's because they start with almost everything in them already. If you were to custom build a PC with comparable ports/connections/hardware and bundled software, they'd almost certainly be ridiculously expensive.

What I'd like to see next for laptops are built-in mousemats that you can slide out, and a real mouse of some sort. Trackpads and those stick things work well, but it takes some adjustment, and even then your fingers numb pretty fast (after just two to three hours, which is little if you're planning serious work or gaming).

I would want any of your guys computers!!! My computer has 3 gigs, 128mb ram, 128 (or something like that) mhz, its from 1996, windows 98 (the only good thing about it), it was custom built with the oldest parts, and it makes the loudest humming noise.

I will be getting a new computer soon tho from MDG, its canadian. It will only cost about $1000 canadian and it has 80gigs, 3.0ghz, its black, windows XP, made in 2003, and 512mb of ram.

Thats good enough for what I need

That computer have alot of RAM considering it's old.

I had my newest computer since 2002, still going strong and I can play the latest games without problems. Thought it feels like I need more RAM (I have 512 MB).

Next computer I buy will probably be made by myself, we have planned to do that for awhile now but never got around starting...

I have a 133 Mhz one. Note that I use it rarely. I prefer my 900 Mhz one.

I just recently got rid of my PIII 501Mhz with 128mb RAM and a 64mb Kyro II GFX card for a hand me down laptop. That damn computer's cooling system destructed while I was off on vacation once, completely frying everything inside of it.... my moms fault for not turning it off when I asked her to.

My laptop is horrible: Pentium 3M 1000MHz, 120 mb RAM, 8 MB 3D Trident by S3. It runs Half-Life at 320 x 240 (software mode) at around 1 fpm. Yes, thats frame per minute.

Well now my parents have this suprisingly nice Sony VAIO PC - P4 2.54 GHz - 512 Mb RAM - 64mb GeForce 4 - WinXP. I've been able to run Unreal Tournament 2004 at 1024 x 768 at no less that 60 fps. Thats only because the monitor is a LCD screen that has no 'refresh rate' faster than that. As for Half-Life, NO setting gets me under 60 fps. even 1600 x 1200 can play Counter-Strike in a 32 player server and never slow down. UT2004 slows down when there are 10 or 12 players on screen.

Oh well. I wish I had THEIR computer.

Just get an optical mouse, i find it works on basicly every surface imaginable except some glosy surfaces. I used it on a bunch of blankents that weren't really that flat at all and i didn't even notice a problem.

Hmmm... Those specs are pretty much standard for today It'll last you a good two years before you consider upgrading

I still have a P133 lying around somewhere... I used it before I got my 1.4MhZ.

As for Half Life, it runs solidly on anything It doesn't even need a graphics card, so it runs a dream on PCs these days
I once had it running in software on my P133... Even though Half Life's minimum is 166 That's great game design for you They don't make 'em like they used to

I'm not entirely sure if I still have it, actually... It's on it's last legs, and I haven't used it in a couple of years

I'm not keeping it for any good reason, it's a weedy excuse for a PC, but I might be able to recycle it one day

My computer is currently a peice of shit.

The one I had before this though... I had since 1994 so meh, can't complain.

I don't even know how to check my stats... I know it has Windows 98, 128 bit of Ram and a 1.9 GB harddrive... I bet I have the smallest harddrive here!

8 years ago and it would be a top-notch PC.

Times goes so fast. Bet that today computers are considered slow in ten years.

2GHz P4
512MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 4 4400 (with 128MB RAM)
HDDs: 80GB + 160GB + 200GB
Soundblaster Live!
Some DVD-Rom drive from Sony and a CD Burner from Plextor
Floppy (it's actually handy sometimes.. like really rarely)

It's nice enough.. but I'd love a DVD Burner (might wait until Blu-Ray stuff becomes common.. not sure) and a 64bit processor.. and like 2GB ram.. and a GeForce 6800 (the PCI-E version of it.. mm.. PCI-E).

I like Dell.

Mostly, you end up paying for tech support. Which most of here don't really need, although it was amusing last year to constantly go "One of these four apartmentmates is a computer science major, can you tell which one?" as my mates' computers constantly broke.

Well, 440 GB hd is a little over kill, but 2.37 GB is not nearly enough. I have games (Unreal, SofF, GTA) that take about 4 gigs a piece. Also, if you listen to music you need a lot of space. Right now, about halfway through uploading my cds, I have 6 gigs of music.

Not quoting it, but someone said they wanted 2 gigs of ram, but I'd say that 1 gig is great.

And for all you waiting for Blu-Ray to take over, don't start buying that shit up till you know it's gonna last. this is like "8track vs cassettes" or "video cassettes vs. (that one semi vcr type thing that failed)". Funny thing about that is that Sony is the one backing Blu-Ray over DVD and they were also the one's that backed the losing side in the VCR battle. Not saying that Blu-Ray isn't going to take off, but DVDs have a big head start on them. Who knows, but I'm just gonna wait to start loading up on it till it settles in for the long haul.
