I've been playing a lot of my older games recently, like Doom, Betrayal at Krondor, and such... and I've been thinking that I tend to enjoy those games more than I enjoy recent games. I can't tell if that's because those were some of the first PC games I played, or if it's because the game play is better than most games I've found lately (I'm specifically excluding graphics, because those aren't very important to me when deciding what games I like to play).
Has anyone else noticed something similar?

It cannot be specified generally for _all_ games, but often games are lacking ideas, really going only on graphics (well, you excluded them; but take examples like Enter The Matrix for example ).

There still are really nice games like Disgaea (PS2) and others.
As for me, concerning RPGs I rather play FFVI VII or IX, because I simply don'T like the newer RPGs anymore; often you don't experience too new ideas, but just warming up old ones. Let's also take many of Nintendo's games on GBA

Yes, remakes of Seiken Densetsu 2, Super Mario Bros. and so on still are good, but only are remakes, taking out money for old ideas

That's actually why I excluded them.
I *know* the graphics are better for newer games (usually, at least), but I don't really care about graphics, so if that's the only thing that's improved, I prefer to save my money for something else

I'd agree with your point about the remakes, except that for me, it's often the only way to play those games, since my ancient NES almost never works.
And then there's me living on one continent, and the NES being stored on another...

Why do you think there's retrogamers out there and why do you think zbattle.net is doing as well as it has been for years now?

Of course...there are some really decent games that have stood the test of time over the years...out of any genre. What's nice about that fact is that it's readily available for everyone nowadays at little, if any, cost. So you can indulge in Ms. Pac-Man on your PC or something any time you like.

That would be classic gaming...those are the legends that just won't ever die. But some of the other old but not so old stuff like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Earthworm Jim Series, and then some of the titles you might not see in America like a bunch of anime series ported to games (like GW:ED, Yuu Yuu Hakusho series, DBZ series, Ranma

I believe that is Zero Wing

As for me, I have been playing through the entire Dragon Warrior series, I beat the first 2, now I'm working on 3 and 4 (considering that 4 is part of a new trilogy I can play it without any relevance to the first 3 games).

No, it's not Zero Wing. I've played that. It's ending is frickin' wierd, but it's not "A winner is you!"

Remakes can only come close to the classics. All of the "new features" In the super mario advanced series arent that.. "new" theyre just, extras.

Id rather play my SNES some days than my PS2 or gamecube...

I've had my quarterly dose of SNES this week (Mainly playing Secret of Mana and Starwing). I always have these 2 - 4 week periods, every season, where all I play is SNES. It's a great addiction while it lasts. And it ain't over yet

Anyway, more on topic, I'm of the opinion that good new games are better than good old games. I had more fun with Ocarina of Time than The Legend of Zelda, Viewtiful Joe than any other beat-'em-up EVER, etc.

I had more fun with Starcraft, Doom, and Betrayal at Krondor than I had with Warcraft 3, Quake 3, or pretty much any RPG made after 2000... so I guess I could say we've had more or less opposite experiences in that regard.

UT2004 would be good... but the single player mode sucks (the AI is terrible), and I don't get the chance to play it online very often.

Oh yes. It seems like the only thing game makers care about today is graphics rather than story. I've rented games quite a bit but the last game I bought after renting it was Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain. I've been playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and PSO for Dreamcast lately.

That would be the venerable "Pro Wrestling" for the NES. My cousin calls it the best wrestling game ever made.

While I don't know if older games are necessarily better than newer ones, I'll point out that I think the last "new" game I beat was Circle of the Moon back in 2001, and I have a bunch of games I've played to the end and never actually beaten that I perhaps should. (Final Fantasy IX and X-2 are on this list).

Additionally: I think Ghosts N' Goblins on the NES has to hold the record for ratio of incorrect-to-total text. It's got about 20 words in total, and manages to mess most of them up.

We've moved away from the older STYLE of games, not to say that either style is better, just to say that it's different. Each style is good and I enjoy them both ^^
