Recently there has been a bit of a debate about whether sporting events should be held on Good Friday. A few Australian Rules Teams, when requesting their preferences for next year's fixture, asked for a match to be played on Good Friday.

Obviously there was a bit of an uproar from some groups claiming the day would be trivialised by have a footy game on it, and that it was not appropriate. Other groups seem to say that if they don't recognise the day as significant, so why shouldn't they be allowed to play on the day? (mind you these people would still expect a public holiday )

Do people feel this is a case of Black or White? (pun intended - collingwood joke)

Why would teams take off on a day when lots of people are free to watch them? Are the Christian players that religious? In the US, the NFL and NBA play on Christmas, and all the sports play on Easter without hesitation.

*shrug* The NHL has games on Good Friday. So does MLB if the season has started by then. And I'm sure there's footy games in England on the day.

Might be a religious holiday but it doesn't have to be observed so solumnly.

It should be observed solemnly, but people aren't anyways. If the Christian players feel that It's alright, than I don't see a problem with it. If they do have a problem with it, couldn't they just sit out?
