| Go here. As the title says, it's pretty much how 'we've doomed ourselves to viruses and spyware'...but it doesn't end there...it also drills on the fact that, for as smart as some of us are in the computer hardware and software biz...that the larger majority of people don't even know what the heck an executable (.EXE) file is. Now, I'll be nice, I mean we've all got a certain amount of knowledge for using a comp, especially if the majority of us came here seeking to use this board as a ROM Hack Domain questions/answers/comments/posting hacks and whatnot...but you got to wonder about the majority sometimes...and this is definitely true. |

| Yeah, that article is pretty much right. There are the people who are computer guys and supply us with the stuff we "want" and theres the other people who dont know where the power button is, and are thenceforth being taken advantage of. It is human nature to be lazy though. People want stuff to work, like you put bread in a toaster and you get toast, without even having to break a sweat(unless your toaster is 5 miles across town  )Theres also the issue about the "free, easy to use, and 100% guarantee" catchwords. Peaple assume its good stuff, click download and "huzzah im teh man cuz I gots a kool program that doez stuff!!!!!" then they wonder why their "OMG KOOL PROGRAM" Crashes their computer every 5 seconds. |

Belive it or not... but I am one of the few persons who actually reads through the license agreement sometimes. Usually out of boredom thought, but then I mainly do that on free non-open source programs.  |

| I'm learning to be more careful about ANY program that I use. Those with EULAs, I double-check it first before installing. Those without, I either don't bother, or look around the place where I got it to see if others like me are using that program. | |||

| Well it's not only the agreements either...it's why people that aren't really aware about the problem of opening bad e-mail attachments still do it anyways. I mean there's a million and one things that a computer user might need to know about but might not know and might not ever know anyways. And the guy referred this to knowing the computer like you do a car, plenty of people use one...but not a lot know what happens under the hood. |

| I skim through EULA's unless they're from companies I trust. But regardless... regular spyware checks. If you don't check every few days, then...  Even after 2-3 days I'll look and find some sort of malware or some cookies on my PC. Might not be doing much but... it's there. |

| While it was generally easy to tell which among the four people who lived in my college apartment last year was the Computer Science major (HINT: It was me), I've made some stupid errors on my own part. Downloading a "plugin" from an MP3 site was one of them, though I fixed that on my own. Though my dumbest error was when I decided to change my desktop. I used a previous desktop--or at least I thought it was. It was actually a screenshot of a previous desktop. In other words, I was very confused when my icons wouldn't do anything, until I figured out what was wrong. |

| Jill: The problem is that some people BELIEVE that there's programs to make your PC faster, to let you search the net quickly (like Google isn't quick enough?!?), to give you all the latest news/weather, etc. Yes, SOME programs like that are out there and are clean, but if it looks too good to be true... it probably is. Again, it's a matter of common sense. |

| It's beyond me how people aren't suspecting adds that looks like a message box but is a picture, or message box which jumps around like there were some party... The problem isn't so much that people are lazy and don't know how to use computers, rather than the average computer has hundreds of security holes. Spyware can literally install itself just by you visiting a web page, opening an email, even just connecting to the Internet, if you don't install the patches (and a lot of people don't), if there even ever is one. (Thanks M$!  )Someday I need to write a worm of my own. It'll work its way into a system by any means necessary, patch security holes, install an AV and anti-spyware systems, and DoS spyware companies. Now, who's got some security holes?  |

| That'd still be illegal. It can only get worse too...especially if this becomes more and more...I dunno, physical? I can only wonder what the next big step would be in terms of computer technology and more holes that would be to exploit... Heck...if it's an annoyance to some now...and could potential screw up economies world-wide...I would really wanna know how bad it could get with even more advanced technology being integrated into our lives. |
