Let me translate that for those who don't understand (you know who you are)

a = b
This means they're both the same number.

ab = b2
This naturally follows; 1 times 1 is the same as one times itself, after all.

-(ab) = -(b2)
Stating that the negatives of each are also the same.

a2 - ab = a2 - b2
Since it has been concluded that ab and b2 are the same, subtracting both from each thusly follows.

a(a - b) = (a + b)(a - b)
This is where they completely change it. The only reason they even need what's before is to make the somewhat uneducated better able to understand. Of course they're the same; a - b is of course equal to 0 since they are the same, so, anything times a - b where a = b is also equal to 0.

a = a + b
Subtract the (a - b) from both sides.

a = 2a
This reiterates, since a = b.

1 = 2
1a = 2a, actually, but you can see where it comes from.

So it doesn't really prove that 1 = 2, it proves that you can prove 1 = 2 through mathematics. And may I remind you, mathematics is still a theory, and there are things wrong with it.

It's just you're not supposed to cancel out a, since it's an equation you're solving for. So poor mathematics, yes.

Actually, that's dividing by (a - b), not subtracting.

If it were subtraction, it would be:

(a - 1)(a - b) = [(a + b) - 1](a - b)

Which is correct.

0 = 1 * 0

Iggy's right, actually. The proper way to cancel out the two (a-b)s is to divide one by the other.

Unless you just badly worded what you were trying to say.

If anything divided by zero equals infinity, don't that show that all numbers are the same? I mean if 1/0=infinity, times both sides by zero and you get 1=0.

Numbers don't actually exist.

You're the one that posted the thread...I would kind of figure that you would want an answer.

nope, anything divided by 0 is undefined--that is currently the concensus among leading mathematicians. In addition, any basic mathematical operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) on infinity still infinity.

It's infinity because...

Let's say you're walking to someplace that's 3 miles away. The number below is how long it took you to get there. If that number is 0, you'd have to be in 2 places at once. You'd also have to be in every 3-mile distance, and every place in between, which is infinite.

Make sense?

Forget complicated maths, the answer is simple:

1 = 2 in the amount of letters they both have.

Case closed. Do I earn the right to perform a victory dance?

I'm personally a fan of 0/0=(All Real Numbers).

0X = 0, where X = any real number.
Thus, 0/0 = All Real Numbers.

No, the letters are different, so they cant be the same

Uhm...Kitten Yiffer...first off, it's imaginary numbers...not unreal.

Second...it's part of the equation...

...and why would we be dealing with imaginary in something like that...that'd be like trying to divide square root of negative two and seeing if it could be divided by zero...

Geh? That may be so, if you talk about the letters themselves. I mean the amount of them.

this reminds me of a book I read involving mathematics with words, where each letter is assigned a number.

Thusly, assuming both have the same base, "one + two = three" is impossible, among other things.

And if you want to go like that, you could go by the number of lines in them.

o = one line
n = two lines
e = two lines

t = two lines
w = two lines
o = one li... Er... Let me think of some other way... That didn't quite work...
