The summer school thread reminded me of something. My father once spoke to me about dying trades. He is into carpentry and tiling, he does custom jobs for people, and considers his trade to be a dying one. He says that the work will eventually be subsidized as landscaping has been, with "puerto ricans doing all the work and the work becoming lower quality" as he puts it. I do not agree with his views, he consistently says things like that, that eventually "cheap labor" (which oddly enough in his case involves the use of minorities to do the dirty work, sounds quite familiar to me) will take over every profession. I do agree that mankind is getting lazy, but it's the same as it has been since the early 1800s. White america has always tried to get someone else to do their work, hence slavery, hence anti-union legislation in the late 1800s and early 1900s, hence the invention of machinery to do the work that, by hand, once supported thousands of families. Nowadays, we see people voluntarily doing the same thing. Everyone wants to be a doctor, or a teacher, or an engineer, or something else that requires a college education (myself included), but the thing is once the job markets become saturated, one single question remains. Who, out of all of these doctors, teachers, lawyers, programmers, and engineers, is going to do the grunt work? We're witnessing a reversal of roles here, as while everyone wants a cushy desk job, the overall quality of the profession decreases. On the other hand, trades like my father's, because nobody wants to get up at 5:AM to drive 60 miles to make people's floors, are flourishing because the artists are becoming rarer and harder to find (if you want a good job, anyway). Eventually, because of this, will we live in a society that considers "poor man's" jobs to be those that involve the donning of khaki suits, meetings, coffee breaks, and the general business world? Will Wall Street become so crowded that nobody can walk the tarmac paths of profit? The small businessman could make a comeback, and eventually we'll see my father's baleful definition of "cheap labor" in the offices, while those who want only money will revert back to the manual labor jobs. It seems as though society will travel in a circular pattern forever, until eventually everything is mechanized and people will be able to sit on their arses all day and watch TV while machines do their work for them. If that happens, I know I'll probably end up in exile, a shack in the middle of Montana, while everyone else around me sits pretty living a soft life. I can't stand not working. What would you do? |

First off, the Puerto Ricans will only do half the work and being half Puerto Rican myself, I'll only be doing 1/4 of the work. Yep, and you thought other "groups" were lazy. Anyway, I'm into those office jobs. I guess I'm not used to it. I'm actually enjoying cooking and hopefully I can move on to better work. Of course, I hate to cook at home, but that's another story. Of course, I would love to own my own gaming store, if possible, but we're neve sure of what's to come later on. *shurgs* Oh, and all the gas stations down here are all self service anyway... *points to title* (edited by Anya on 06-22-04 02:11 PM) |

I'm Canadian. We do work, eh. Based on how I feel next year, I might apply to trade school, because a sad truth is that stone masonry, and other trades are dying. Soon, those foolish programmers will be looking at lower pay, because we won't have efficient enough robots to do stone masonry for years. |

Originally posted by EvillerLegion Hey, I wanna be a programmer. The thing about saturated trades is that they still work, if you're a cut above the rest. It's no good being sub-par in any profession, nevermind an easy or hard to find one. Still, lucky for me my dad says if I'm ever in a tight spot he'll let me come work for him. Always have something to fall back on, right? |

I'm majoring in Computer Science and all my jobs are leaving this country...but alas, i do have alternatives as teachers can never be outsourced so I'm currently banking on that as my fall back job. If not, maybe my japanese speaking ability might take me somewhere As for self serve gas stations...the last gas station I saw with full service was right outside the western boundary of yosemite. I wonder if that place is still there--I haven't been to Yosemite since 1998... |

The gas pumping thing was rhetorical, obviously most stations are self serve now. Though come to think of it, there's a shell station in my town that still has full serve gas. |

There's still quite a few full-serve stations in Montreal - and on the 401, you'll find plenty of them at the service stations. It's definitely not a dying breed... just a slightly more expensive one. |

I have actually thought about this once, and I seriously doubt it will happen anytime soon. In my school, for instance, not everyone wants to be a lawyer, doctor, or the like. A good portion of my classmates are going to go work right after high school, and work for the town, or some other blue collar job. Others are simply forced into the lowest paying jobs, such as gas pumping, just by default (dropping out, etc). If this does ever happen (which I doubt it will), it will be a LONG way off, as the hierarchy of job training ratios remain reletively stable. |

Neo: Actually, my teachers tell me that jobs are starting to come back to this country because people are realizing how stupid it can be to outsource these things. In any event, I don't know if you'll ever see a true reversal of roles per se, though it's true that the Air Conditioning Repair industry is going to suffer from a severe shortage of qualified workers. Basically because few people realize how much money you can make in the field. |

Most of the ones in Milwaukee have dissapeared. But as Colleen was saying there are some still out there. Some maybe have moved to more places who use full service more.

Since I don't live in New Jersey, I know for sure who'll be pumping MY gas...ME. Pennsylvania doesn't have that many full-serve pumps...at least in the area where I live.

Another aspect to consider is that, for the most part, the "cushy" jobs carry cushy wages with them. You make a lot more money as a compuer specialist than as, say, a convenience store clerk. That would have to change in order to have a role reversal.

I'm currently unemployed, but over the past 6 months ive accumulated 300 hours of volenteer services. If more people volenteered for the "grunt" jobs such as putting the books away at the library, or like me, teaching small children to defend themselves, we can all make the world a better place. And as for the original post, not many people want to be teachers nowadays >> since the whole shootings stuff... |
