I know next to nothing about politics, bear with me.

I heard at school from some bitch that we (America) were going to have a draft next year, ages 18-25, both men and women. I asked a few others about it and they heard nothing of it.. but then I read about it in an article recently. What I'm wondering is, how likely is it for this to happen?

from what i know...there is no draft coming up and I don't think it is going to happen. i'm not sure how many elected officials are willing to go along with such a thing since them reinstating the draft may just be their ticket out of washington...

Wow, if this ever happens and im in the right age period im moving to Canada, Why the hell should I feel an obligation to give my lfie for my country , alot of the time people say they want to give back when they haevn't gotten shit in the first place.

Once again though I really doubt this would happen Bush would get hell if he ever did something of the sort.

As far as I know the only idiot politician who's suggested bringing back the draft was Charles B. Rangel from New York.

There were a lot of rumors flying about reinstating the draft a while ago, but they were just rumors. So, you can chill.

Draft? Sure, I'll have one. Want one, babe?

I'm not worried. I wouldn't put too much thought into those rumors.

I'm glad that I live in Sweden, a country who isn't allied with Nato.

Infact the military around here get's less and less money, we only use the military here for emergencies and such.

That seems kind of odd. We don't need a draft, as far as I know. At least it's just a rumor and I'm not between 18 and 25 .

My parents told me this might happen a while ago, but I figured not much would come out of it. That was a few months ago, and I haven't heard anything, or cared about it since.

Anyone who thinks of moving to Canada during a draft would be in for a sour experience...You wouldn't be allowed to legally leave America and enter Canada. With a draft called, you now have manditory military service on your hands.

The US has always, and probably will always, have draft legislation. The American nation was wrought from war, and will use war as a major tool in order to keep itself going. The current issue is the fact that US forces are too spread out. The army is far too small to effectively cover the world from bases in Central America to North Korea. In fact, the US is planning a pull out of troops from North Korea for reassignment to Iraq and Afghanistan. The US needs a stronger presence in the Middle East if it wants to maintain a hegemony within those areas. The only way for them to keep the order in the Middle East with modern extremists abount, many of whom are in government, is to use force. Drafting, I don't like it. Canada got rid of it after the Great War. And our armies that have served in the world since have all been volunteer armies and were known to troops to be some of the most vicious fighters out there. Even today, if an American is given an ex-Canadian military man for their drill sargeant, they are guaranteed to be excellent soldiers.

Oh, these aren't rumors, really. The fact is that the US senate and congress both have just to pass quick little bills that will indirectly or directly allow the draft. It isn't too hard. There would only be one way to stop that and it would be the Presidential veto. And really, things like this almost never get vetoed...In fact, I don't think that the prez vetoes too much. Any of them.

The current rumors just are anti-Bush. The thing is, any president can do this. The minute that there is an announcement for more troops, the legislative branches of the US government just need to pass some bills at the presidents recommendation...AND BAM! say bye-bye to your sons and daughters.

It's an excellent point. War is the only constant in American history, wherever there has been conflict there has been force. The problem is that my History books overglorify America as being the hero, but in reality the heroes of history are always the victors. America's been the victor thus far, and is as a result a legend in its own eyes. Our troops being spread across the world is nothing more than a testament to how victorious we've been.

I can't stand the idea of being forced to fight, mandatory military service goes entirely against the "land of the free" ideal. The land of the free is also the home of the brave, but some people would rather be free to not be the American definition of "bravery," which involves bloodshed, destruction, and now in latter day cases humiliation of one's foes.

We're all cowards, in a way. Even those who choose to fight.

...I thought KERRY was the one rumored to pull the draft card.

Oh well. I doubt any government would be stupid enough to pull that out of their hat - it's a great way to cost them the next election.

I see no problem with them having a draft. Yea it sucks, you have to fight a war. But freedom comes at a price. The US isnt always right, and bullshits stories to do what it wants, but i dont see anyone else with this kind of power.

And with our armies too spread out, anyone get reminded of an empire that did that? Rome ring any bells?

Legion has a good point about the draft, it doesn't take much for congress to get that thing up and running. And if you don't know, the pentagon has been appropriating money to its draft boards so that they will be able to have them fully occupied by early to mid 2005. Also, legislation, though minor, is being put in to change some of the rules of the draft, such as including women, throughout the past year. The reason that it's been relatively quiet is that none of the actions have been that drastic to draw media attention, which is what everybody wants during an election year. The reinstatement of the draft would be a terrible thing, because this is a very unpopular war. The only war I can think of that the draft was not opposed to was world war 2 and that was because so many people believed that that was a good cause and that the need to take action was neccessary. Since then the draft has not been well accepted, such as in Vietnam, where there was strong dissent towards the war and the draft. I could see the same thing happening if the draft was reinstated for Bush's personal vendetas and childishly thoughtout plans. Also, I'd say it's pretty brave to defy the draft it that comes. I personally would do the that because not only am I opposed to war in general (which I've found has become more and more strong in me) I totaly am against the Bush administration and the shit that they've done for the United States and the rest of the world. I love all my republican friends that defend Bush and the war and say that the draft would be a good thing to help the war, but then I have to remind them that they, unlike myself, could not be drafted because they are either too young, or in some cases have physical ailements, such as shoty knees that would keep them from being able to fight in the war. People that are not affected by the draft should not be the ones fighting for it to come about again.

I really don't know much about the political side of this, I haven't been able to keep up with the news lately. However, I fail to understand why we should be forced to throw ourselves into a completely foreign area with people we don't know so we can be turned into soldiers and go kill people. Sounds like fun, but no thank you, especially not in the best years of my life. I might not be old enough to be effected by it just yet, but I have friends who are and it's quite rediculous. War or not, why should Bush be allowed to take away the best years of your life, throw you into a living hell and give you a life time of mental problems? If the suicide rates are higher, doesn't that give you an idea of whether or not this is a good idea?

Besides, this whole war is stupid, terrorism will always exist and the middle east countries want us gone anyway. Bush needs to learn that America isn't a country of Superman clones and that we're not all trying to save the world. It would make more sense to try to fix the problems in our own country before we go around trying to fix everyone else's. some good may come of it, like the women's equality in Afghanistan (yes, I know, different country and old event), but I see more harm coming to us than good to us or the rest of the world.

Fuck you too.

Not like I'd really have a choice in the matter if, in fact, they did pull a draft on me. Hey...if anything else I'd get that 'die with honor' bit...and if I ever did get drafted and survived I'd have that on my resume for the rest of my life. It goes a long way.

I just prefer not to ever be in it, if I can. I'm really passive about looking for trouble like that...I'd rather just live my life out peacefully...you know?
