Yep... *holds hands up* Just got my PC connected to broadband...

I've started looking around IRC using packetnews.com to look for titles to download, but finding the ammount of episodes that some of my friends have got has prooved tricky.

Take Chrno Crusade... I've only been able to find three episodes that are in the middle of the series :s

I can't find any Ranma 1/2 either...

I guessed that on that bot, the episodes would change every so often, making different episodes available for download.
Also, I guessed that perhaps getting into knowing certain channels and networks better would mean that I'd be able to find more of what I want without having to search for it on packetnews.com.

Of course, it's only my first day, and I know that an entire collection isn't going to happen overnight, which is why I'm asking for help now...

And one last question, particularly to the admins... It isn't equivilent to asking for roms to ask for IRC servers, or methods to download, is it?

And for the record, I'm impatient as hell, and I am seriously trying (and it's seriously trying me) Bit Torrent.

I'd definitely stick with BitTorrent, Kasumi... There's countless download managers out there for it and almost all of them do the job.

eMule is a viable option for series that you can't find on BT.

BT is your friend...I've been able to find bunch of media files (music videos and TV shows not in my country for example) I would never be able to get my hands on using stuff like kazaa and company.

however, bittorrent (BT) sometimes is a drag because people can be stingy when they share...

There's no problem with finding the anime I want on BT, but unfortunately without knowing if or when the download speed will pick up is a problem...

What's you experience with it?

Download speed varies with the ratio of seeders to leechers.

Personally, my rule of thumb is to turn it on and leave it on when I sleep.

BT is pretty much your best bet. And even if you can't get it in one night, I think there should be a resume feature in the original program...at least...there's on in burst! RC5.

It is a pain that it doesn't have a constant rate, but it's there and it's not like Direct DL sites exist for that kind of thing very long or at all.

IRC would be your next best bet but it'd be as good as file-sharing almost, just more specific on what you want with less users. Heck, there's even FTP serves that you can get the stuff off of...as long as you don't get these weird 10:1 or even 100:1 servers (in terms of you upload 100x what you DL in 100:1).

my experience is kinda not accurate because I use my workplace connection (university class) to download. I've been reported to be downloading and uploading over 1MB per second and that was only with 4 torrents active.

As for anime, I've always gotten around a good 40kb/s download rate on average (same univeristy class connection). Sometimes, it dips to 20kb/s and sometimes it goes up to 300+ kb/s.

But anyways, for anime (or downloading several gigs of stuff), paitence is key and you can get many series in 1 week of continous downloading.

In IRC channels, most of the people just leave their programs running, so there's not really anyone active there. I've found myself in that situation more than once. BT may take a long time with some anime(ZZ Gundam), but it's less risky.

Hmm.. to download anime it really depends a lot where you are and what you're looking for. I'd say bt is the best bet for most everything (especially batch torrents of entire series), but if you want the latest episode of something it's much better to hop into the channel and use an xdcc (if your broadband is fast enough to benefit from it). Here's an example: new eps of FMA, One Piece and Tenjou Tenge are released the same day, I want them all. Now BT would suck my upload (I'm seeding Naruto too) and probably only dl at 40kb/s or something on each of the torrents, whereas with xdcc bots I could probably get all eps at 100kb/s each (if I limited my naruto seeding a little). The very best (fastest) way to get it is from an ftp/http source that you know has a fat line and that has the stuff you want.. I can get them 3 eps at about 300kb/s each if I have Direct DL for all of them.

I like BT though.. since it has built-in CRC checking and doesn't need much attention, I can just limit my upload to about 80% of max and let it run in the background while doing other stuff and it gets done sometime later.

DC++ apparently has a TON of stuff on it, but the problem is that they make you share insane amounts of data to be able to download. If you have a crapload of episodes/etc., great. If not...

Put it this way - on my old PC with the 6 GB hard drive, I couldn't get into ANY DC++ server because I couldn't share anything.

Myself I don't take much truck with DC++, I like BT.

But I do have a question regarding downloads as well. When using BitTorrent, does anyone else get a strange shake effect on their episodes? It seems like every fifth or sixth frame in each second of animation is out of place, and the result is a distracting shaking effect that gets very annoying. It's the equivalent of watching a movie on really crappy VHS, the picture feels out of place constantly and can't stay still. If anyone knows what causes this, I'll be quite grateful.

i've downloaded 20+ GB of anime through bittorrent and I haven't had the effect that you are describing? Just where are you getting your torrents from?

That could be your computer if it's old... I know it happened to me back then.

BT shouldn't do anything to the quality though - it's a straight file download.

I get my torrents off of Animesuki, which usually links to scarywater.net. My computer's not OLD per se, in fact I got it last January (January 2003), and it still stands up pretty well when compared to modern models, it's only a little below the line. I'm thinking it's a corrupted codec or something wrong with my player. I use Windows Media Player 9 usually, though sometimes I use quicktime, BSplayer, or Irfan.

Get Gspot (I don't know where from ), it can check what codec avi files use. After you've done that you'll want to pick up a good XviD codec, I recommend koepi's version (google koepi) and maybe get ffdshow (latest version) too, it won't hurt. Also, in case you haven't got DivX 5, get it, XviD might be able to play DivX, but it's not guaranteed (not the other way around either). As for weird formats such as .mkv (Matroska) and .ogm (Ogg Movie) you'll want other stuff.. Matroska splitters etc, just remember that not all .ogm works fine in windows media player and that most/all .mkv files don't work good at all (it depends on how shitty the encoder is and stuff). If that doesn't work.. hm.. might be the graphics card.. might be a terribly slow HD.

I doubt it's my HD, it's only 7200 RPM but I never had problems with it before. Maybe graphics card, a GeForce4 MX420's pretty old nowadays. I'll take your advice though, thanks.

EDIT: It worked! I guess it really was a bad codec after all, thanks a lot!

yeah, some times divx4 can play divx 5 stuff but it always doesn't work. Likewise, sometimes Divx5 can play Xvid stuff. So yeah...it all depends on the codecs to are using. Instead of using Gspot, I use a program called AVICodec. It is a small download (i think less than 100kb ziped) and no installation required.

Well, XviD is sorta made to be playable by DivX, but not the other way around.. some people come and say they have trouble with XviD movies and that they "have the codec installed" and then it's revealed that they've been using DivX 5 all the time for their XviD stuff ;P.
