You all know about those spam mails you all get at a daily basis in your e-mail inbox and such. Usually they're trying to sell something and such, but why, OH why, do some people just send e-mails with random characters in it? What USE does it have to them?

Edit: And how do they get your e-mail? I made a totally new hotmail account and I didn't select any ad-mails and the first day I already had heaps of spam mail. :l

Hotmail accounts are easy to find, I guess. My AOL account got heaps of spam before I ever told anyone about it. It's just predictable.
It's not always about common domains.. I mean, my Yahoo accounts gets virtually no spam, and I've signed it up to things.

I never get spam, and I have four e-mail accounts. I get no spam whatsoever. I got a nigeria letter once but that's it.

They use bots, programs that crawl all over the internet after e-mail addresses. Or they take it from huge "e-mail registeres"

YD: No, I don't think that's it. I've occasionally signed up for various things and I have gotten *no* spam on my current @aol.com E-Mail address.

Bots that look for e-mail addresses? Evil. :O So that's why most people type their e-mails like blabla at hotmail dot com.

that's because you have an updated version of aol, which blocks a lot of junk. I have a mac, and it is no longer supported.

You would think that, but I haven't activated any spam filters, and probably won't until I start getting some actual spam. As it stands, I don't feel like fiddling around with options, but I also don't feel like having some of my actual mail not getting through.

Yes that's why, heck even I do that. Especially after seeing that google have found my profile page. You never know but if one of thoose "e-mail seeking" bots came to Acmlm board...

But there is other ways to fool the robots to, like doing a script which looks ok for humans. But gibberish for the bot.

But it's automatically set.

I just heard that there is a cellphone virus out. It doesn't do anything, but it's paving the way. Is it also on its way for cellphone spam too? I don't mean telemarketers, I mean things appearing on your screen.

Spam.. oh, you mean my whole inbox... Yeah, Ive been forced to re-name it to "the spam box"...

Its not annoying... I dont get many important E-Mails... so Im not too worried... I just delete everything each day to prevent it from piling up...

... And I'm pretty sure I turned it off at some point. Could be wrong, though. Anyway... Yeah, I heard that a few months ago or possibly late last year on the news; Supposedly it infected some sites, took the form of a downloadable ringtone, and when you downloaded it it made your cellphone's screen flash "VIRUS".

"As it stands, I don't feel like fiddling around with options"

I assumed that meant you didn't feel like fiddling around with the options, thus not turning it off.

And it was old? I just heard it on the news today, like some breaking story or something. I almost never watch the news, so I don't keep up with this stuff regardless. It said that what it does is your screen flashes a word, and it can spread to other cellphones 30 feet away.

I once watched a computer show where they used that SAME effect to simulate a virus infection. Talk about low-rent. XD

Sympatico blocks most spam aside from anything Viagra related, but Thunderbird picks up on most of them.

I've one of my hotmail accounts used to receive almost 2MB of spam on a daily basis, then I turned on spamguard to the almost exclusive level and I receive only 1 in a few days...

as for yahoo!, one of my accounts currently has 4200+ pieces of spam

Yep. It's new, it's for Symbian-based phones, Nokia phones with the Series 60 OS in them I think. It spreads via Bluetooth, this wireless standard they have for connecting stuff wirelessly. And the 30 feet is the maximum range of bluetooth.

While you sit there wondering WTF the point of such spam is, your browser attempts to load the 1x1-pixel transparent GIF image "http://www.spammerswebsite.com/verifyaddress.php?youremail@yahoo.com". They now know that your address is valid. You have just signed up for an assload of spam. Congratulations.
