I am wonder what some good play station emulaters are, and how psx roms work. Like do you need a cd to burn them on or are they just a simple file thing that you use with the emulater.

Try here. Emulators -> Windows -> PS About the other question, I'm pretty sure it allows you to just use a Playstation CD... |

ePSXe is your best bet, you just have to get a few external files for video and audio...oh and the BIOS file as well. It can work in a few fashions...you can either have the original Playstation disc, that runs, or you can have a burned ISO or BIN file on a CD to run it...or you can have it on your hard drive if you prefer. I wouldn't try running it unless you have a decent comp with a decent vid card though. I mean I've got a 1.0 GHz comp on here which usually runs it moderately okay...but the video doesn't go to 32-bit so I don't get the full experience of it...especially on some games that require it (like Xenogears for one). |

I'm gonna assume you meant 256MB vid card...in which case you should be fine...just make sure you get all the required essentials for the emulator...if it doesn't already come with it. Should run fine.

Heh, I switched to emulator as well when my PSX broke. This is my advice. ePSXe is the best emulator out there in my opinion. It can run about 90% of the games out there just fine, while only a few don't run at all, and some are only a little buggy. You will need to get the PSX bios, I would advice getting SCPH7502.bin you can look on Google for it, or use a p2p program like KaZaa or Overnet to get it. Also you will need the plugins that make the emulator work. My advice is to get for a graphics plugin, Pete's OpenGL2 (or Direct3D) driver, it is the most compatible and most updated (usually a big update every other month or so). For a sound plugin us the Eternal SPU Plugin, it emulates the sound almost perfectly (though Metal Gear Solid can be an annoyance with the voices). As for CD ROM, get P.E. Op. S. CDR Driver. It is also made by Pete. You can get these plugins at www.ngemu.com they have everything you need to get started. When you get everything it is going to take about an hour to get everything set perfectly (this is just because of testing and restarting). Once everything is set and you get used to everything then you can start. Set your controller config, make a memory card (which BTW you have infinate amount of cards that you can hold so you can have as much space as you want). Then get ready to play. ePSXe can play CD images known as an ISO (THEY ARE NOT ROMS), the images are VERY big (about 500-700MB on average). If you have the time and patience to get them then do so. But my advice is to rent games or borrow a few games and burn them to CD with Nero. The emulator can play real black disk CDs and burned CDs. Let us know if things don't work. I have used ePSXe for a while and know how to fix a good amount of problems (though I will admit that I have one that I'm still trying to figure out). Good luck |

Ed, read the other posts; you can just put your existing PSX discs into your CD-ROM drive. Very convenient, and legal too!

Yep, ePSXe is definitely the way to go. You will need to download the BIOS files for sound and video config, that takes about 2 minutes. To play ISOs for PS emus you don't need to burn it onto a CD, as long as its a .IMG file it should run fine. Finding the ISOs can get a little frustrating, but I know a superb mIRC channel that I can pm to anyone who wants it... Edit: You will need some FTP software to properly download from the channel. ePSXe almost flawlessly emulates any game if you have a good computer. (edited by Gb boy on 07-06-04 02:05 PM) |
