Close. That's the derivitive of the equation rather than the integral. Just do the opposite of that.

To get it, you just plug 8 different X values into the equation and multiply it out.

In hindsight, that probably would have been easier if I had just tabled it on a calculator...

I'm sorry, I'll try to make sure you can score points next time.

Seriously though, I had just woken up and didn't read the time of the post. If there's a limit then I'll observe it. Nine minutes is a bit much... Sorry.

You deposit $5000 in an account. The compound interest increases at a rate of 1.04% a year. If the rate starts at 4%, how much will you have after 10 years?

It isn't clear what "increases at a rate of 1.04% a year" means. If this means that the interest rate you're getting is 4% in year 1, and then 5.04% in year 2, and 6.08% in year 3, etc., which is what it literally sounds like, this is a really unrealistic investment since no bank could ever make such huge payments.

If the interest rate of 4% grows by 1.04% of the original rate every year, you've got an interest rate of 4.0000% in year 1, 4.1600% in year 2, 4.3264% in year 3, etc. This is somewhat imaginable.

Anyway, I'll analyze both, compounding annually in both cases:

Yr Int (1) Int (2) Money (1) Money (2)
0 5000.00 5000.00
1 4.0000 4.00 5200.00 5200.00
2 4.1600 5.04 5416.32 5462.08
3 4.3264 6.08 5650.65 5794.17
4 4.4995 7.12 5904.90 6206.72
5 4.6794 8.16 6181.22 6713.19
6 4.8666 9.20 6482.03 7330.80
7 5.0613 10.24 6810.11 8081.48
8 5.2637 11.28 7168.57 8993.07
9 5.4743 12.32 7561.00 10101.01
10 5.6932 13.36 7991.46 11450.51

Therefore, (1) Somewhat-realistic rates:

$7991.46

(1) Ridiculously-expanding reverse-loan-sharkish interest rate:

$11450.51

Someone tell me where I can get either of these plans; here in Japan we get 0.001% interest on our savings, and in a year, $5000 earns me a nickel in interest per year, and $0.500025 (or 50c) in ten years!

(Edited to make the table look nice)

JJ, which was the interest rate you had in mind?

And my answer to the next one (OK Grey, I guess I can't complain that you see the posts first this time...)

X = 60 + 1520/11
Y = 60 + 2280/11
Z = -760/11

Simplified:

X = 2180/11
Y = 2940/11
Z = -760/11

Edited: Hey, wait a minute! The first time I saw this post, the third equation was 5x-7y=40! Now I have to solve it again!

OK, here are my answers to these three equations:

y+z=x
2z+x+y=60
5x-7y+z=50

x = 30 - 55/9
y = 30 - 55/3
z = 110/9

Simplified: x = 215/9, y = 35/3, z = 110/9
