Perhaps there should be an option to disable the new/off graphics in thread listings. They're small, sure, but there's a lot of them. (Could be replaced by various coloured text.)

hmm...that would be a nice option. it shouldn't be too hard to write in the php needed to do that right? instead of using images for the new/off stuff, maybe we can replace it with text, which loads a lot more faster...

Hmmm, HH do you are on dial-up, or simply disturbs you the "flood" of them, when not being logged in for a longer time ?
I'm on 64k and had never any major problem with these small "new" GIFs; I like them; I guess the font is from Tiny Toons - Busts Loose ?

You have the Proxomitron running; maybe there's a filter which allows you to kill specific images (not the "kill all images" entry, since it would kill everything on board.acmlm.org), with the little need, to edit the proper blockfile ?

Aren't they layout based? Or are they seperate from layouts?

Possible... probably, but for what use?

We're talking about images which aren't even 500 bytes, I don't really think it will make any noticable difference at all, now would it.

No, I'm on cable, but my school is as well. Problem being, a couple hundred computers share it, and all run through one slow-ass server (whose only purpose is censorship ) so it's really slow. Plus, rendering time, though slow, is somewhat noticeable. I'd like to keep it as fast as possible. (And think about the poor 56Kers. At my dad's, that's all I'll have too. )

I got another idea. In the Post Radar, perhaps add an option to display the person above/below you in order of most posts (so if you're, say, 12th (which I am right now ) it'll show the people in 11th and 13th). Just something I thought of.

It'd also be nice to have a smilie toolbar that works in all browsers. I've already written the code for this. (Proxomitron adds it before any forms containing "<input type=HIDDEN name=ACTION value=*>" on this board, which includes the log out form, so I have a handy list of them at the top of the page too. ) It's simple Javascript, all you'd need to do to add it is put the code in before the Submit/Preview buttons in the HTML, PM me if you want it.

There are several month old threads that say "new", so I don't think it's a bad idea. It will also help slower computers load faster.

I'm on a 56k connection, and my CPU is a Pentium 233. The board loads just fine for me.

If a month old thread still says New, then it's one of two things: Either people are still posting in it, or you're not using Mark Forum Read.

however, i believe the lag stems from the browser making multiple requests for the same file? even though it probably won't download the same image again, it must check to see that the file it has is the same size and date as the one it downloaded...

i'm on sub-56k (it is a 56k modem but i don't get 56k connections) internet connection with 50 threads per page, so something like this would be nice.

Why are you complaing about a <500b file?

Load it once. Maximum 5 types [New, Hot New, Hot, Off, Off Hot] * ~500 = 2.5k or so.

And I'm on a PII 300, and there' snot a single problem for me... it'd be a waste of options as far as I"m concenred.

I'm on AOL 56k, mind you

It's very rare that a 56k modem connects at 56k. Right now, I'm connected at 45.2k. I generally don't connect higher than 46k. I also have 50 threads per page, and again, no lag.

I doubt that anyone here has a computer worse than mine, though XKeeper's AOL connection might make up for having a faster processor than me, and make us even...

If graphics that small are slowing you down, then you should switch to LYNX, which is a text-only browser. THAT'll solve ALL image problems.

Like I said before, we're talking about images not even 500 bytes in filesize, I don't see what your problem is. Your post layout on the other hand:

title_blank.jpg - 0.72 KB (739 bytes)
title_left.jpg - 0.74 KB (754 bytes)
title_text.jpg - 2.68 KB (2747 bytes)
title_right.jpg - 1.11 KB (1141 bytes)
iylogo.gif - 10.6 KB (10856 bytes)
iybg.jpg - 89.74 KB (91892 bytes) (!!)
badge.gif - 1.15 KB (1181 bytes)
hh_jap.gif - 0.21 KB (212 bytes)

TOTAL - 106.96 KB (109522 bytes)

I don't get it, you apperantly do notice a slowdown 'solely' because of images less than 500 bytes in filesize, but you are using a post layout worth over 100 KB of images. Am I just missing something or is this just stupid?

Perhaps it has to do with the icons being repeated 80 times per page, and my layout as much as 25 if I were to make every second post?

That would be very nice, I always have my postradar like that (or had, none is above me, now I have the two under me instead ).

there was a time i connected at 48.8, 49.2, and 50.2...those days are now gone and I have no idea why...i never changed ISPs. It like one day, it just happened.
Now, i rarely connect past 41.2 and the average is 33.3

but anyways, hyperhacker's idea is just a suggestion that will not harm the board in anyway. It is not like he is asking for a large chunk of the php code to be rewritten

I somehow got 110k (with a 56k) two times, one year ago. Of course, let's say my modem was...hacked.
