Fundamentally, the Gender Recognition Bill will allow transsexual people to change their gender on their birth certificates.

This has long been a problem in the UK. The birth certificate has to be supplied when a person is requested of proof of identity when applying for a bank account, a job amoungst other things. This violated the Human Right to privacy relating to one's past history.

The UK has been left behind in legal terms by other countries... Every other country in Europe has laws in place for this purpose, and even the US has legislation.

However, years of problems are now coming to an end... The Government has passes the bill, and now awaits Royal Ascent. The Queen formally approves the bill (a formality, she holds the green stamp, basically), and the bill becomes law.

Press For Change
The political protest group that has pressed for legislation for twelve years.

All in all... It's a great day for a long misunderstood and ridiculed minority of people

Huzzah!

Congratulations. It makes perfect sense, really - and the less red tape you and others have to go through, the better.

Ah, perfect! I guess it would be hard to get a job in a great deal of places with a past such as that. It would at least generate a lot of unwanted questions. Congratulations, I hope this will help out a lot!

Must be an Australian thing. Richard Gere was the first thing to come up here as well.

"Every other country in Europe has laws in place for this purpose, and even the US has legislation."

Ehhh...

Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but that kind of sounded like you were making us look like we're suppose to be behind the times. It's that whole "even" word that does it for me.

Either way, congrats. Sounds like it will save you from future uncomfortable/needless explanations.

Congrats Kasumi-Astra.

It's a human right to makes ones past a privacy. I didn't know that.

Job interviews tend to have "unecessery" questions. I heard alot of cases becuse somebody not getting a job becuse of something silly...

Thank you, everyone

GerBil = GEnder Recognition BILl, given to it by the transpeople it represents, I guess. I think it's a cute nickname

It's always been expected of transpeople to announce their secret to everyone in every situation.

Whenever you hear someone talking about it, they always say something like "oh, he'd better tell me about it if I ever met one"... Which of course is ridiculous.

The aim of the game is to live your life normally, afterwards. As if you'd never been born a guy. After all, this is what the majority wants, a normal life. This new legislation to designed to protect that, a basic human right that we're expected to break by bigots.

Of course, there's still a long way to go. Having a trans woman in Big Brother doesn't help. All the media is extremely prejudiced and sickening when talking about her. "Shemale" comes up alot. The media dare not call homosexual people "fags" so why are these comments ignored?

There's one simple reason. For every transperson like me, there are two Jerry Springer breed trans people in the media. Put simply, the stunners pass away into obscurity. The loudmouths and the idiots always get noticed, and this is what has given us a bad reputation.

Hopefully, now that it's much easier for a young transperson to go through the process completely, maybe the next generation will command a little more respect.

Here's hoping
