So, I left my friends dorm room at 2AM for an hour drive home... Two miles outside the city a deer runs across the highway, I try to swerve, and end up spinning out of control and end up in the ditch. Luckily, after a quick look to make sure my tires still worked and checking for any major damage, I was able to drive out of the ditch and back to my friend's college. So, I pulled up into the parking lot and look at the damage again... There is now a noticable dent in the side of my car and the passenger door can only open a few inches now... Also, I noticed a bunch of grass or leaves stuck out of my door... i started to pick it out and then realized it wasn't grass or leaves, it was DEER FUR and wedged inside my door was more of the freaking deer!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure similar experiences have happened to you, but I pose this question: WOULD IT BE TOO MUCH TO BUILD A FENCE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE HIGHWAY!?!?!?!?!??!?!??!!??

Also, all deer need to be shot.

Lucky you didnt hit it head on, you wouldnt be here. Im sure there more of been a deer crossing sign somewhere in that general area. Im sure that the authorities will use that as an excuse not to build a fence. Although I dont find a fence being all that necessary.

I have been on a couple road trips with my step dad, a truck driver, and you a have no idea how often you see wildlife cross the road. Just have to be cautious.

I know how that gets. My dad lives in Alberta and drives trucks. He's plowed through quite a bit of wildlife. I went with him a few times, and nearly hit deer, elk, you name it. Once had to do something (forget what) outside the truck while bears patrolled around.
When you get into a deer crossing area (not necessarily a marked one, even if it just looks like one) slow down, watch out, and be ready on the horn. Also you can get whistles you stick on the car, that when you go fast enough, they make a high-pitched squealing. You can't hear it, but animals hate it. (Even just blow into one near a cat. Eep!)

Fences aren't always needed. It's just that you have to be cautious. Once we were driving with my uncle and one ran across the road but we didn't hit it..it's just something you have to be careful with and watch for the signs. I don't live in those places with wildlife with deer and stuff so I don't have to worry about that . When I go camping, that's when you see all the signs.

I am fortunate that there are fences put up in a lot of areas on the highway. I'm lucky that when we go up to Minocqua, though, we've never run over any. There are a lot of deer that cross up there, we have to be careful.

Around my place, I've seen deer, foxes, and other such creatures in my yard, let alone on the gravel roads around my place. My dad drives a feed truck for a nearby feed plant (Champion Feeds), and has nearly hit a lot of animals.

spncram, be happy it wasn't a moose or an elk. If you did hit it, your car wouldn't be here, let alone you.

Even if you build a fence, unless it is tall enough, deer will jump over it. Over here, there is a pretty high wall, and deers still manage to get to the road, so you won't be safe.

It happens and it sucks, but there is no real way to prevent it other than being careful. I suggest you use your insurance if it will work. Just be careful when you see those signs, if you do.

I hate seeing roadkill, seeing dead animals make me sick all the time... I get very sad each time.

Here the highways have fences, but it's scary driving on non-highways... one time we were really close hitting some deers. That was scary... both for us and for the deers...

It's very sickening. Last year, there was a bird down Main Street which I often came across... *shudders*

To answer your original question, building a fence can actually be quite the pain in the ass. Ask my neighbor, who fenced in his backyard so his dogs would have somewhere to play.

Wow.. living in the city is so much different. The only thing you have to worry about running over is maybe a pidgeon. When I go upstate though, there are lots of highways with deer crossings and there are other animals. Whenever I go up there I get so depressed.. there's roadkill like every 10 miles. And it's a 200 mile drive from my house to there. ..

It's not that much hassle to build a fence I don't think... Everyone has fences around here. If you didn't have a fence.. you'd pretty much be living in the other persons yard. I just think they don't do it so they can preserve natures balance. Lets say the deer live on one side of the highway.. and their water supply is on the other. Now this example doesn't really make sense.. but stay with me.. If that were true and they erected a fence on either side of the highway.. the deer would need to find a new water supply. Or something.. ..

My only advice to you is to keep an eye out for any deer your see or anything obscure that's moving on the road. Don't drive so fast, even if there are no other cars.. and if you get into an accident in like.. the middle of no where.. make sure you have some sort of phone on you. That wouldn't be fun to be on the top of like a deserted mountain.. in the middle of the woods.. with no phone. That always scares me when I think about it..

It's still on the first page so...

Never encountered Wildlife on a highway, maybe it's because here every highway has fences on both sides, not only 'cause of Wildlife.

Build a fence along an entire highway... Do you know how much time and money that would take

On the subject of roadkill Squirrels are a real problem in our neighborhood... they REALLY enjoy jumping out in the middle of teh road every once in a while. Though the strangest RK story is of the guy that hit a turtle... HOW DO YOU HIT A TURTLE?

Whoever made a highway through a forest with lots of wildlife needs to be shot, not the deers.

Practise, my friend. Lots and lots of practise. The better question is "DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO HIT A TURTLE?"
