That's just dumb... I hate software patents. They really do infringe on freedom.

Oh, and:

Microsoft, which spends nearly $7 billion yearly on research, said that it regularly patents technologies around the use of software and computers.

I would like to know where the reasearch goes. Because I haven't seen much improvement at all from Microsoft in the last seven years.

Win XP... that was a improvment IMO from Microsoft.

But really, this patent is just for US... until software patents comes to Europe...

...which was the first OS who used double clicking?

Actually, Kitten Yiffer, software patents will come to Europe. They've already settled that in the European Union.

I'd imagine it was probably the original Mac OS, or maybe one of the prototype GUIs Xeros had developed. I don't really understand the point of patenting something like this. Anyone care to explain the significance? Other than making Microsoft a target for lawsuits...

This article is so full of shit it's not even funny. As I told Max yesterday, here's what they patented:
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 27 granted a patent for a "time based hardware button for application launch" in which a click of a button can start different programs if it is clicked once, twice or held down for several seconds.
That means they patented a system that incorporates ALL those things at once. They didn't patent single clicking, double clicking or time-sensitive clicking. They patented putting all that together in a specific way.

In fact, if double clicking hadn't been invented, they would probably have described it in the brief as "clicking the same button twice in succession in a short amount of time". The fact that there is a phrase called "double clicking" means that there's a lot of what's called "prior art", ie that it's been done before, and thus you can't patent it. They won't approve it, at least.

Yet another example of why there are lots of losers not sufficiently accustomed to reading comprehension. Please use your brains, folks, and stop going "Oh, that wacky Patent office / Microsoft corporation, what won't it do next?".

Edit: [17:14:03] wootest: it's like if someone patented a wooden keyboard those asshats would say OMFG WOOD HAS BEEN PATENTED
[17:14:18] salsaflies: XD!
That's how stupid this is.

The way I see it now if I read it again ... click once to open something, click twice to open something else, hold down the button and yet another thing will happen ... if that's used to load different programs, that actually seems new to me

Just the single/double click and button holding was there long ago, probably even before Windows ...

Oh well, I learnt a lesson. I shouldn't be so quick reading articles. The write made it like they patented the double click.

Yes, that's new, and that's why they patented it. And yes, it was around before Windows (Mac, the Xerox PARC OSes and even earlier).

It did. They probably believe that themselves.

so do I...but still, you have to blame the people who wrote the article and they way it is laid out for this misleading. Many people, just skim...there aren't a lot of people who just read the entire article unless they wanted all the details--which for me I didn't want to read all the details. So yeah, I'm partially at fault for reading it all but the same responsibility goes to Yahoo! front page (which I pulled the thread title from).

OK, tomorrow I'm heading down to the local patent office and patenting the action of pressing a key on a keyboard. Seriously.

So what are the odds that eventually gets ported over to Longhorn? (Yes, I know the patent's for the Pocket PC, but if it's successful then MS will milk it for all it's worth.)

HH: People can protest certain patents being filed. If MS had tried to patent double-clicking, it would likely be vetoed.

How can you patent a movement or something that isn't physical it is kind of like patening breathing or something.

www.ffii.org

There's a lot of fun stuff patented.. like webshops involving a customer and a store (not a particular webshop, just the whole idea), JPEG, mp3, thumbnail images (the idea of a smaller image of a bigger one). All this will be accepted this summer if the new law is accepted in EU, I'm voting for a party that is against it.
