that's it? you're not going to comment on it? nothing? Maybe explain the point? Doesn't this relate to darwin.. like, species evolving in different situations won't be exactly the same. why? who cares? wtf? (edited by Yoshi Dude on 06-05-04 12:04 AM) (edited by Yoshi Dude on 06-05-04 01:07 AM) |

It shows that the animals at least have some form of communication that requires regionalization of their vocal modulation. Thus, they are communicating in an actually complex language.

Speaking of animals and language.. I saw a program on TV just some days ago. There was this kind of monkey (don't remember it's name) that had different sounds for different predators. For example they'd make one sound if a tiger came by, and another sound if it was a snake, and yet another sound if it was a falcon which threatened them, so that they'd know where, and how to escape and hide from the predator. So they've actually got different words for different animals attacking them. |

That does make sense. Animals almost have to have some form of communication, otherwise they would get eaten really quickly by predators.

Most animals have very pragmatic communication, and a lot of species only have sounds for other animals. They need to be able to say "Here comes a tiger" and "Here comes a snake", but they don't need to say "Here comes one of my own" because they're still on the stage where communication is still used primarily (and only, in some cases) to alert others in case of danger or other important information ("I found lots of food").

Are you sure Jesper? Maybe they say "Lol, did u see that gazalle? ^^" Some birds like to imitate other sounds, so i'm not surprised that Ducks sounds diffrent in diffent regions. |

The article noted that this was because of a need to be heard over the noise of the city. So this isn't really regional dialects as such, but just city ducks adapting to their surroundings.

*agrees with NSNick* To believe all animals of a certain species would naturally inherit a speech pattern is foolhardy at best, they lack the intelligence to form one. Maybe some primitive sounds for various things, as suggested in this thread, but a complex language isn't possible. (I also hate movies with talking animals for this same reason.) |
