I agree with Fyxe about football... I usually call it American football whenever I am talking about that rough rugby, but the name still dosen't make sense... I've seen many-a-games of American football, and I've also heard Americans use your same exact argument. Well, listen, the main bodyparts used in football to interact with the ball are your feet. The main bodyparts used in American football, however, are your hands. This quote from Wikipedia explains why it's called football: "The name football might seem a curious name for the sport of American football, as the players' feet rarely have much to do with the ball -- kicking the football is only allowed in certain situations and is most often inadvisable. The vast majority of game time involves players holding the ball in their hands as they run. However, the sport is a direct descendant of rugby union football (which in turn descended from soccer), as explained below, and has retained the name." - See, the only reason American football is called football, is because it stems from the original football. As for calling it gridiron, it makes a lot of sense, since gridiron is a commonly used name for American football. |

However, this is a discussion I've had with Americans so many times, that whenever someone brings it up, I kinda automatically start debating it. It may be hard to understand, but football is one of the most important things to me (as the Pope once said; "off all unimportant things, football is the most important"), and I react to all attacks on it, even joke ones. | |||
