I worked for one week in the Resource Room at my school, a self-contained classroom for kids with major learning problems. There is a kid in there who's fully autistic, and he doesn't talk. He's extremely quiet, in fact he never makes any sound. But one time, on the bus-ride home, we put in a music CD that he liked to listen to, and he started quietly singing along. There's actually a girl in the class that's pretty much the same way. After playing with her for a while, she earned my trust. She actually is probably the smartest in the group. |

This entire mix of things makes him extremely unreliable, violent and very warped. Not to mention his lack of social skills, in the 18 1/2 years I lived under the same roof, he had a grand total of 2 friends. I think he was a good friend to them, but he also was extremely jealous and suspicious of them doing anything on their own. I'm glad I'm not in contact with him anymore, because it's so hard to deal with someone so intelligent and at the same time so mentally twisted |

Well, I know that Aspergers' is in my family, and that I exhibit symptoms of it (awkward social skills, obsessions over things (anime! computers!), a tendency to be a nerd) but I also know that some people are just like that too, without Aspergers. I don't think I have Aspergers, but it wouldn't surprise me either if I were to be diagnosed with it. Like I said, it runs in my family a little (I have cousins with it on my mother's side of the family) and I do exhibit some of the more common symptoms. I don't think I'd really care if I was diagnosed with it either.... it would only give me a name for the weird way I feel, and nothing more. But I certainly relate to the feelings of social awkwardness and such frequently associated with Aspergers. As long as I remember, I've never been able to work out these "people" things. |

I've been told i've had asperger's before. I do see it in me, but now, i'm getting over these little hurdles that it puts in my path. |

I don't consider Aspurger's a hurdle. Sure it has some disadvantages for me, such as increased stress, but they're all workaroundable and the advantages it also comes with are a more-than-decent tradeoff.

I don't think have Aspurger's but I do have some symtoms.I have a high IQ and I am really quiet unless I know the people I am with. I have kinda a hard time to make friends. I do have really odd obsessions also. I think I am also partialy deaf, it is some time really hard to hear things (Like people talking to me) and other times things are too loud.

Please don't take this the wrong way, folks. Many people with some traits of Aspurger's are perfectly normal. Another thing: Stop talking about Aspurger's as if it were a disease. (Key word: Symtoms.) Like I said, I treat this subject tenderly and am very sensitive. Although, I thank you all for giving me so much feedback on the subject.

I never think of Aspurger's, or any other form of autism as a disease. Once again, working with these kids, I know that most of them are perfectly fine, and all of them are smart.

I don't really think of the word "symptoms" of being synonymous with disease, but then I guess that is what a lot of people associate it with, I guess. It is used for a lot of things, not just things in the medical field, although that is where it is most COMMONLY used. I just used it because it was the word that suited what I was trying to say the best.... so forgive me, I just tend to use words because they fit, and often not think of the psychological impact of those words. It's for that reason I'm probably often called "blunt" "tactless" and such. And yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm normal, I just... guess I'd like to know for sure one day. This is hard to explain, but... I want to know because I have a few comorbid mental illnesses. And it has become an obession of mine to try to work out why -- to try to piece together all the contributing factors to my psychological makeup, and work out why I'm the way I am. I want to explore all the things that may contribute to my psychological makeup -- and Aspergers has come up in my mind because it is in my family, and because I display a number of Asperger traits. One day, I'd like to know. One day, I'll pluck up the courage to go see a doctor or something, get myself psychoanalysed and find out why I'm like I am. For now, all I know is that I'm not "normal", and that traditional medications and hypnotherapy hasn't worked for me, and only left me with more questions than answers. I'm pretty sure that Aspergers is not a contributing factor to my current makeup, that I don't have Aspergers (I rather think that my odd traits are more caused by my environment/relationships with people). But I'd like to know for sure one day, y'know? Ah, one day it would be so nice to get my head around...er.. well.. my head. But is it even possible to fully understand yourself? |

To be honest, I'd rather have Aspurger's than not. I'm kind of arrogant that way. And I disagree with everyone being normal in their own way. I'm not. And I'm proud of it!

I was just reading a book (well, 2 actually) about a teen with autism. Although I do want to point out that his is like everything else in the way that if someone says some of the traits of the disorder everyone thinks they have it with out fully realizing what it is. (Just like depression, ADD, anxiety disorders, etc.) Everyone can show some signs of different disorders, but that really doesn't mean that they have it. I'm pointing this out because if I had autism (I don't but it's just an example) I would feel really insulted if a bunch of people after finding out what it was clamed they had it too. I'm not saying anyone here who's said they have autism/asperger's isn't right or anything, I just needed to point that out though. Schwa, I'm really happy you see things that way, it's a very good outlook that can help you and other people. ~Delial |

Many famous scintiests and "IT companies leaders" have aspburger. Bill Gates is showing quite many symptons, especially when you look at how he made the company succeful. Yes I saw a documentary about him. |

Hehe, this is showning that people with Asperger's Syndrome are more intelligense that normal people... Well, maybe not all of them but several... I have Tourette's Syndrome, as I already have mentioned and I was smarter than several others in my old class... (edited by Millennium Neko on 06-15-04 02:42 PM) |

Smarter, yes, but here's another thing. I'm torn between whether or not I get respect from people, or not. It seems all adults I meet respect me for Aspurger's, but most of my peers scoff at me for being different. I was called a retard just for trying to be considerate. There were two girls at my school, walking down the hall slowly and talking. They were in my way, and I needed to get to class. I couldn't walk around them because the hall was too small. So I just walked behind them, waiting to get to the exit doors at the end. Then one of the girls turns around and exclaims, "Ya know you could've said something if you wanted to get by!" I walked by and replied, "Not while you were talking, I couldn't." What did I hear in return? "What a retard!" I didn't get mad. I'm used to insults. But what it felt like was being grouped in with all the severely disabled kids, because the word "retarded" technically means Down Syndrome. Any feedback on that? |

Personally, I think it's kind of harsh, and I don't think you deserved it. Some kids are just... annoying.

(think shinji, seriously, shinji from evangelion, that bad) but since I live in the wastland boonies of America, rapid medical detection has never been applied to me, so, I wouldn't have an official diagnosis. which wouldn't matter anyway because I've since overcome all those annoying little tendencies and know am just as boistrous as the next bonebag. conform...one of us, one of us. teeheehee. Seriously though, one day I got tired of how I was and perpously went about acting in the exact opposite manner I felt like being. (kinda like that one Seinfeld episode) It wasn't easy and I equate today as something akin to "training" than anything else. Over many years and even more fKitten Yiffers and awkward moments, I finally move through many of the barriers that my extremly introverted personality had placed before me. Like 'ol Son Goku, I trained my tail. And although there is most definitly(here's an example of some of my old stuff, I spent that last twenty minutes retyping the word "definatly" because I can't remeber how the ending is spelled, just couldn't take my mind off of it until something that I had shelved in the back of my head "clicked" and made me aware of what I was doing) nothing wrong with people being introverted, whether by a syndrome or not, I am still kind of proud that I was able to change myself in a real way. I'm not done yet, and each day is its own little challanges. Day by day ya' know? |
