I don't know if any of you know what Autism is, but I have it. Aspurger's Syndrome is a form of this, kind of like a "high tech" version. Stress comes easier, friends come harder, social skills are warped a bit, academic skills surpass the greatest minds at my school. What do you think? I want to know if any of you people out there know anything about Aspurger's or Autism. One thing, though, that I'd like to share is that I consider Autism to be it's own race, in a way. Not just a 'disability'. I consider people with Autism as "my family". Anyone with Autism on this planet is my brother or sister. It's a sacred subject to me, so don't ever be saying anything bad about it, or you end up hurting myseelf and all my brothers and sisters. |

I think I may have Asperger's Syndrome, although I'm not entirely sure. I have all of the symptoms, for the most part. It's tough for me to make friends. I usually make friends out of luck or something.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when I was 5. Schwa, you are right about it being more "highly functional" than autism but it is still hard for me and others with this disorder to have good social skills. The only problem that I have with this disorder would have to be daydreaming or "spacing out". I do it more frequently than most people and I even do it while walking. I am not sure if this is true but some people say that autism and Asperger's Syndrome is caused by mercury poisoning. I did a thread about this not too long ago and I still don't know if it is true or not. Schwa, here is a great link to go to for a better understanding of Autism and Asperger's and it is http://www.autism.org/asperger.html. I hope you this answers your questions my brother. That isn't to different from my personality and mind skills. I don't have it since I don't have many problems making friends. This isn't a bad thing if you look at. I mean you get intelligence and that is good. Daydreaming is a good thing too, at least I hope since I can almost shut reality out. Really I don't think you have a problem and people are just making stuff up when people are different. I am one of the smarter people in school because I know more in a general area then on one thing. Odd never knew about this, but it isn't a bad thing if you look at it.

If it helps, I believe Our Fearless Liter has Asperger's, too... then again, reading the description, it kinda sounds like me. But only in the way that ADHD did... and that's, like, everyone. So I dunno... I wouldn't mention it until someone knowledgable diagnoses you, Vanguard, but it's entirely possible.

My friend's sister (who I babysat one day) has autism. Not a benign form. But a very, very strong one. In fact, she can barely function on her own. It's really sad. |

Originally posted by Schwa I don't know if I have this condition, but I can certainly relate to the symptoms. Self diagnosis is pretty stupid and I don't feel like asking a doctor about any of this. |

Wow. I didn't think so many of you knew what it was. But hey, I'm glad you do! Everyone should know what it is. Daydreaming is a big thing for me, too. That's why I joined this forum. It lets me talk to many people about my imagination and such.

I know quite a bit about autism as it's my job to know, I'm a Support Worker and I work with individuals with extreme forms of autism in all it's guises, including Aspergers, the cases are so extreme there's not much the individuals can do for thremselves, but as they have so many problems communicating (in most cases we have to teach them a simplified version of ASL/BSL called "Makaton", or use flash cards), they can get really frustrated, this, together with a large dose of institutioalisation leads to huge challenging behaviours. Basically, count yourself lucky, things could be a lot worse, however I like the idea you don't see your affliction as a barrier, that's a really humbling way of thinking and I wish more people thought the way you did, people can be so negative about learning difficulties.

Gawsh, I'm flattered. Yeah, I do consider myself a lucky character. Here's a little inside scoop; if you were to see the kinds of things I did in 6th Grade, you would have laughed, cried, then lost your mind. It was a sad life for those around me as well as myself; that was the era of my parent's divorce. The funny thing is that I never thought about the divorce at all at school, as I hallucinated about the teacher ripping my arm off that one day. (Really, I believed it happened until someone calmed me down.) Total nonreality. But Aspurger's has made me stronger; I have a pretty good idea about how the human mind processes, and how to calm down whenever I get stressed. For me, having pressure on my shoulders or back (i.e. a weighted coushion) relieves my stress a great deal. I learned that some folks with Aspurger

At least something good came out of it, right? Actually, you did come out good. During the school year, I work with other kids who have autism, and some are a lot worse than you are. It's pretty hard to keep them under control.

Yes, you can count me as another brother But I only learned about the whole autism/Asperger thing about 2 years ago ... Although I generally get along well with people, my social skills were never good ... just like how I rarely ever start threads here, I hardly ever start conversations with people on my own, and the few friends I had were because they looked for me first It also didn't help that I had no brother or sister until I was 9 ... And my academic skills are certainly uncommon, I must have one of the highest GPA's in the whole university here (4.13 so far) yet procrastinate and don't work/study that hard I knew the usual grade 1 stuff (like reading, writing, counting, even + |

Well, I do also have aspberger. So you can also count me as yet another brother... I'm not surprised that some people here have Aspberger or Autism. My sister also have aspberger... my real sister. I don't find aspberger bad, it does help sometimes. And I have a high IQ becuse of it... (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 06-05-04 01:49 PM) |

I worked for one week in the Resource Room at my school, a self-contained classroom for kids with major learning problems. There is a kid in there who's fully autistic, and he doesn't talk. He's extremely quiet, in fact he never makes any sound. But one time, on the bus-ride home, we put in a music CD that he liked to listen to, and he started quietly singing along. He only talks either when he's singing, or to people he completely trusts (which, to my knowledge, consists of 2 people). |
