Dunno if this should go here or in CD.. the guy does have a point with this.

Anyway.

I stumbled over this.

It's an interesting essay about religion, atheism and the afterlife, among other things. About half the essay is all about various evil stuff God has been doing throughout history. Using a bible to check his quotes is recommended.

Check it out.

It's very true that the Bible states that people worshipping other religions is sinful. I dislike this, although many other religions also dictate the same thing.

I believe in a higher power, and respect nature, but I do not worship any religion because it is common for them to have hateful rules such as these.

Although the man quite clearly has a point about the rather negative sides of Christianity (and of most other organized religion, I'd guess), I find his essay to be very selective and extremistic. He only attacks the values of religion that extreme fundamentalists uphold, most Christians would not recognize the picture of a Christian that this guy is trying to paint. He also seems very extremistic himself in his atheism, he is nearly as blinded by his hate for organized religion as those "mindless sheep" that he attacks in his essay.

So, all in all, even though the man does have a point in that the Old Testament doesn't exactly portray the Christian God as a loving God (and, of course, he's far from the first man to have said this), his essay, as a whole, is way too extremistic to score any points in my book.

The Bible is a big book, so of course you find alot of things that could conflict with each other. Soon someone would start a site why he is not "Satan".

I got stuck on this line:
Ever been drunk? Well, guess what: you're going to hell. Galatians 5:21. Hey, wait... didn't Jesus turn water into wine? Then god sends people who get drunk to hell? Bit of a double standard, yes?

Some people drink responsible, becuse you drink Wine dosen't make you drunk.

Erm, the whole water into wine thing was a metaphor. He didn't literally turn water into wine. It's like...suppose to represent that he can change regular things into great things. Or something like that.

And if you go back into the OT, technically, you can't even cut your hair.

Jesus was the man who discovered weed, he gave weed to the people and the people saw him do amazing things. And then Jesus was killed because weed was bad and illegal. Then all the happy stoners smoked more weed and saw there lord and savior Jesus Christ. The end.

I'm not sure that's really the case. I think Roman Catholics believe that's the case. Kinda like transubstantiation during the Mass... Protestants say it's symbolic, Roman Catholics believe you really are eating him and drinking his blood.

So yeah, that's why I don't call myself Catholic.

The quotes on Herod are taken out of context. Herod kind of...I don't know, killed and bribed most of the high Priests in Jerusalem, and killed the Roman Governor there. Herod Agrippa, as written by Tacitus, gave the kiss of Judas to his best friend Emperor Claudius.

Also, why the hell would Exodus mention the Christian God? Exodus was written 2 millenia before Christ was even born.

"Ever been drunk? Well, guess what: you're going to hell. Galatians 5:21. Hey, wait... didn't Jesus turn water into wine? Then god sends people who get drunk to hell? Bit of a double standard, yes?"

Again, misinterpretation. The wine that was drank during these ceremonies was diluted to 1/8th strength. And this was drank instead of water because water back in those days could not be sanitized. Alcohol kills bacteria and parasites, and diluted wine was safer to drink.

This person is a complete and utter moron attempting to be humorous or point out some sort of retarded anti-Christian plot like those dumbass Pagans in my school do.

Thank you all for remaining civil and courteous; God willing, we can discuss this without idiotic anti-Christian hatred beyond that which we are analyzing.

Simply, what I've gotten from this man's essay is a feeling that he is so doubtful of his own stance on religion and the afterlife that he needs to provide logical proof that will help confirm that, indeed, he can do whatever he wants and believe whatever he wants without fear of Hell. Those of us who are secure in our belief of God will read these essays, nod thoughtfully, and then move on, entirely unchanged. However, I pray for those who waver in their faith and are turned completely over by this man's "logic," a notion that a Christian must often ignore in order to remain sane.

Alright, it's been proven that Christianity is an absolutely ridiculous idea! Well...I don't care. As this essayist proclaims, it is only fair that a person should be allowed to worship as he pleases without fear of hatred or malice as a result. I never tried to convert him, so why does he so actively attack me?

Well, that was meant more as sarcasm. Yeah, I'm not too good at that.

But, as long as you've mentioned it, since when is "proof" in an anti-God discussion actually valid? If this gentleman has provided anything which hasn't been said before, I'd be shocked. The truth is, there is no way to disprove God, nor is there really a way to prove Him. I am comfortable in my belief that He is real; apparently, the essayist is not comfortable in his belief that God is not real.

Wow that guy doesn't really know to much about the bible. Jesus banished a lot of the old ways and made it so we were more open to other beliefs. Plus the bible wasn't written by God. It was written by the imperfect humans that we all are. So this person is missing some of the main fundamentals of the bible itself. Oh I think the entire bible is supposed to be taken literaly.

As for him saying that he thinks God is evil. No god is just vengeful at the people he warns and warns that he exist, but they never listen.

Well morer or less I believe Jesus Christ once existed but really I think he was just some type of scholar and his acts were greatly greatly exaggerated, Im an Atheist because it is imposible to know whether a god exists or not.

and something to think about , what is reality? you know from dreams that your brain is capable of producing fake images but what if your dreams are true reality or if what you see now is something totally different I mean really when it comes down to it how can you even trust your own perception. This may be a blunt comment but really the only reason I see for religon is because people fear death and what is unknown to them. Really being atheist this article only reminds of my own beliefs.

Alsohow many of the old ways did jesus banish and was the bible written before or after his death? (really im not sure and i mainly skimmed through the article and really dont know laods of christianity only the basic fundamentals.)

I'm interested in all religions, just finding stuff out about them and stuff. I don't really have my own religion that I follow, because all of them have flaws, and it's not like your life will not be as fulfilled if you don't follow a religion. Anyone can believe in anything they want, if it makes them happy. It just pisses me off when they attack another person's beliefs, because that usually results in that person being hurt. I don't know what i believe anymore because there are so many theories out there, and most of them don't have enough proof to back them up. I think that technology and science will probably turn a lot of religious people, because it offers eplanations (and proof) to why things happen, etc.

He gave it to the people as medicine, at least that's what I heard...

One thing that I like about Christianity is the forgiveness, anyway it works like that here. Last time I was in the church all my sins was forgiven... thought it didn't take long time before I mada a new sin.

The part of the Bible called the Old Testament was written before Jesus. Some of it are old Jewish folktales that survived only as oral traditions for centuries before somebody wrote them down. The Old Testament consists of stories spanning over thousands of years, and was written down over an almost equally long period of time.
The New Testament is the part of the Bible written after Jesus changed everything. It consists of all the letters (mostly written by Paul), the four Gospel Books, the Book of Revelation, and the Acts of the Apostels. All of this was written within a century after Jesus' death, I think.

I think one problem that this guy, and many other in America, has, is that religion is not taught in American schools (I think it so, anyway? There's something about Catholic Schools teaching it or something?). I believe that to be able to choose what to believe in, you mustn't be ignorant of the different religions and what they teach, and that's why religion should be taught in school. Religion has been mandatory for me since Elementary School, and I've thus learned about many different faiths and religions up through the years (all from a neutral point of view, of course. It does focuse more on Christianity than other religions, but that is because Christianity is the religion closest to our Western European Culture).
