Okay, bear with me a bit, I is teh drunk (So I may not make much sense). But I'd like to ask you guys a question.

Do you guys consider yourself to be a Netizen, and what is it about you that makes you think you are one?

I'm starting to think that I am one, because I'm at a party with some friends, and it's just occurred to me that outside of computers and anime, I really don't know what to talk about. I know every meme that's been on the web for the last three years, but I don't know who's winning the football. Or what the current hollywood gossip is or such.

At first, I thought I might just be a loser, but it's not really that.... it's more that I've **chosen** not to know these things. I've chosen to not know these things because I don't really see a benefit to knowing them, I guess. I'd rather interest myself in the things I am passionate about, the things that might bring me work in the future, the things that I love (they may be geeky, but that's just me), rather than interest myself in what "society" or whatever seems to think that I should be interested in. Or my mother, more to the point!

That said, I've noticed that I know more about what's going on on the internet than I do about real life. I was there for "All Your Base". I know who Homestar Runner is. I've tricked people into going to goatse, and I've "badger badger badger" ed on forums.... and even found myself singing it in real life (kill me if I do the dance the badgers do though). I even know that badgerbadger music is out of synch if you watch it long enough. I can't tell you who is winning the football, in fact, I don't even know the last time I watched local news. I have my own webpage, my own blog, my own forum, multiple e-mail addresses, more accounts at more websites than I can count on two hands.

I think this qualifies me to be a Netizen.

So.... I want to know, who else here is a Netizen, and what is it about YOU that makes you feel this way?

Considering the fact I can tell people IRL hundreds of things about people online and very little the other way around, I'd consider myself a netizen. Or at least to be one of my catchphrases:

100% FUKT.

Edit: Especially considering the fact that everything you said about the Badgers is true PLUS I make my own Badger merchandise (bags, fridge magnets...) AND am not too shy to do the Badger Dance in public with little to no provocation.

I find myself earning my Netizenship more and more each day in various ways, at least according to your standards. For instance, I have used the term OWN3D in real life.

By the way, are you SURE you're drunk, Taryn? That post actually seemed pretty coherent...

I am positive I'm drunk

You don't drink 1 beer, 1 bottle of 'Pink' champagne, and 2 glasses of red wine since 4.00 (it is now 9.23) and NOT be drunk. I just don't lose (much) of my typing ability, that's all....

I wonder if my friend can drink all that without being drunk... I know it takes a LOT of beer and liquor to get him drunk.

Considering my friends have no idea what im talking about half the time, I am a geek Netizen. I still know what to talk about with my friends, I follow events going on and I still get outside, but I still rather be here. Hard to accept this after only a year and a half of being a forumite.

When conversating with friends about non-social things, I categorize the subject according to level of geekiness, based on the general level of the person I'm talking to.

Level 1 - Technobabble is allowed, used and generally understood.

Level 2 - Use technobabble sparingly or jokingly. Say "modify the phase variance" for extra hummus.

Level 3 - Don't call the verb button bar in Sierra games the verb button bar, call it the "whip yo mouse up" bar.

Level 4 - Translate everything to Normal Speak. Everything but "owned" and such.

In Adelaide, and the surrounding regions, 'non - netizenship' seems to refer to knowing who is winning the current "AFL" season" (football) knowing who is doing well in "Big Brother" and basically not caring what this "Ad Aware" thing is...

Maybe I just value my data more highly or something....

At first I read the thread title as "Nietzschean". Haha.

But yea, I'm definately a "netizen"... my online social life is more interesting than my irl one. Although that's not saying much.

I'm not sure. I do talk about anime, but I don't have a website since I don't know how to make one, and I don't have a job. Every once in a while i will use 1337 in normal speak. I hate sports, and uh I do trick people into going to goatse. Curse my brother who tried to show me, but I haven't trusted him since I was 6.

I guess the fact that I spend more hours on the internet/hacking roms than anything else would make me a netizen. I was never very up on sports, and pretty much any knowledge I have of what's happening comes from the paper. I hate watching games unless they're NBA. (Baseball sucks!)

I'd say my life is pretty balanced between Internet and Real Life. It seems the people I talk to online have really interesting lives, because I always end up saying "Oooh my friend from america did so and so.." heh. I think I am a netizen. I know Homestar too (and have introduced all my irl n00b-friends to it!), have had websites and stuff..

Oooh, levels. I usually only get up to level 2 with my friends

I consider myself a netizen I spend too much time on the computer as it is. At school people ask me how to do things on the internet and what not.
I think it's because I live out in the pre-boonies, there isn't really much to do where i live. Most of my good friends live in a city 20-30min from me.

I'd say I'm one too, using the computer almost every day since 1992 (online since 1999) does that

With my cousin (Malow), we always have plenty of stuff to say (mostly about computers, games, etc.) ... but with most others, it seems I never have anything to talk about ... my grandparents would like me to talk to them more, watch TV with them sometimes, and so on, but I'm always here on the computer doing whatever I feel like doing

But even before computers, I was already a bit unsocial ... I get in contact with more people here than I would offline otherwise At least I read the newspaper a bit every day, mostly the sports section though, and I don't speak any form of l33t offline ...
