I really, really enjoy this game it isnt the same as the original but they improved on alot of factors. Graphics are nice and well done and the game is overall quite fun I might actual even buy the cart for this one. it is about Donkey Kong stealing a toyline of wind up Marios, fun game though. Anyone else play this or plan on it? (I didnt put this in Mario as Donkey Kongs also a main character? Move if you please) (edited by Angel on 05-27-04 10:20 PM) (edited by Angel on 05-27-04 10:25 PM) |

Got the ROM for it. Played it like I do every ROM I get for about a half hour, hour. Big note, Donkey Kong on the GB will prolly kick this game's arse anyday...but that's just me. Anyways...the game in itself is relatively decent, I was surprised, considering I had heard that it was gonna be average...below average...and the like. If someone's looking for something to do in their free time and have at least a decent time beating it like they did back in the old days with the original...then they'll want this...it's good. |

Very nice game, love the little clips and voice and stuff, certainly well done. I've heard from KP that this was done by a fairly new branch in Nintendo. I'll say, very interesting. I've done my technical studies of the musical workings of the game (as usual) and here's my boring little review for you. In some of the songs you might (depending whether you use an on-board sound card or not) recognize some sound samples. Know the "GS/GM Synth" you see on most computers nowadays with on-board audio? Quite a few samples were taken from that, and that's why you instantly recognize on some songs.. hey this sounds like a MIDI file. However as a paradox to using samples taken from an instrument set made compiled for MIDI purposes. The songs themselves actually take on an XM-like format (you know the tracker format thing). This is surprising as formats such as these are generally used only by the "underground" and un-official developers/tools. On the professional, most of the time MIDI-based formats are used, and this has almost always been the case. The official AGB SDK comes with a MIDI-based engine called Music Player AGB 2000 (which I've nicknamed as the "Sappy" engine), and there is another MIDI-based engine, more advanced, called MusyX by Factor5, which is essentially the same as MP2k just with more functionality. There's a little insight into GBA music for ya . It's clear that the songs for MvDK have been directly converted from XM files, I mean, apart from all the song titles ending in "XM" . I compared the files to actual XM files and I saw the similarities (this in no way means I'm writing a converter anytime soon nor do I plan to). The instruments/samples are shared throughout all the songs, and are pretty much in the same format as XM standards. They were even nice enough to leave the instrument names, further proving their cheap little sample rip-off . "Crash Cymbal (Sta[...ndard)]", "Synth Bass 2", "Piano 3", etc.. as well as their original samples "marih_no", "dkboss_gtr1", "Mama Mia", hehe go figure... Despite the simplicity of the sound engines used here, this is not to say that the music quality is bad or anything. I quite like it. It is a little odd though, but it's a change and it's interesting . I'm not here to judge a game by it's music engine capabilities. It's FUN! And defintely worth the play... (and pay if you're not a tight-ass.. or broke like me ) |

I actually have played teh rom... although it was enjoyable while it lasted, it didn't last that long. Conclusion: DK on GB> Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Bouche: Could that explain why the music does sound a little... odd in an emulator? It's still good but the voices sound a bit tinny... not sure if that's an emulator fault or if that's just how they came out. Maybe they're better when done through stereo. Anyways, the original DK on GB was GREAT. Just a lot of great puzzle levels, good difficulty, etc. - worth seeking out if you never played it. This one might not be as great challenge-wise (although I'm only half-way through the game), but it's still good. There's 2 parts to each level. The first part is the traditional "find the key and unlock the door" stage. Once you do that, you go into another area where you have to get the Mini Mario. Pretty simple. So 36 stages (...There seems to be space on the stage screen for more tabs but I'd rather find that out myself. ) becomes 72. Then you have to complete a Mini Mario level, which is kind of like Krusty's Fun House. The Mini Marios follow Mario around the stage, and of course you have to hit the correct switches/etc. to lead them to the toy box. Finally you face off against Donkey Kong in the final level of each stage. Sounds pretty easy, and I'm sure if you just sat down for a few hours you could beat every level - but there's a twist. In each level, there's 3 presents (usually 1 in the first part and 2 in the second, but that varies). Grab all 3 to enter the bonus round at the end of the level - or to go for the level's star. See, each level has a specific point total that's set as the "High Score". Beat the High Score, get a star. HOWEVER, in almost every level you really need to do three things to get the star: - Grab all 3 presents, since that's 10,000 points right there. - Finish the level as quickly as possible. - Don't die. That last point is a little frustrating. See, when you beat the first part of each level, the time left carries over to the second part. HOWEVER, if you die in the second part, you lose that extra time - and in most cases, that'll kill your chance at getting the star. So if you die in the second part, you have to exit the level and go back in to try beat the score. Still fun. |

Colleen: I believe that's because your sound amplification is too high (You've got it set on 4x or something), I had this at first. I set my sound amp to only 2x and it sounded better. Mess around with that and see how you go. It's quite possible that the samples they have placed in are too loud as well and thus get distorted.

Can't seem to find that option in VBA, Bouche. You mean 11/22/44? |

I'm somehow disapointed with Mario VS. Donkey Kong. Maybe it's 'cause I'm a great Fan of Donkey Kong '94. (Still searching for a GBS of that). It got great grafics, and really funny movies, But I miss the edutainment movies from DK94. I ordered the game, but the Rom plays fine on VBA, sometimes freezes on my Game Boy Player, but doesn't play on my GBA. And Bouche, allready ripped the sound? |

Yeah, I think you need a save fix to play it on a backup device... The DK94 movies were cute too, but then again the gameplay was challenging. The difficulty's picking up for me now... mastering the Level 4 stages is easier said than done. |

Well, if it's anything like the AWESOME Donkey Kong 94, it's going to be great. I played that game to death. I can get through it easily with a nice load of 99 lives at the end. I can get all of the three items on each stage, I have some very good times for most levels. It was one of the greatest GameBoy games ever and it's a shame most people forget it... A great challenge and utterly enjoyable. Excellent final boss too. |

Oh, I was talking about MvDK. But yeah... The Pyramids in DK94. OY. Wasted many a life in there... and the Tower was like a gauntlet. |

It dosent look too hot imo. In Electronic Gaming Monthly, the graphics were stretched out, but even the ones where they were about the size of the gba screen(or smaller) still looked like ass... i think i'll just wait for donkey kong to be released on the gba, because that one dosent look like ass as much as the new one... and i heard that there wasnt much replay value, and thats something i like to have because that will help me keep the game longer than normal(i kept MZM for less than a week due to no replay), unless its a cheap game(this one isnt) the next game im thinking of buying is probably castlevania harmony of dissonance |

This game took me a bit. I've been playing it ever since it came out, and I finally finished it with the plus worlds. (Thanks to my job and online stuffs ) I admit that I wasn't too fond of the art style. It looked both nice and not so nice at the same time. I dunno how that would work, but eh.. I guess it's meant to be seen on GBA's screen. I think is the first game that I've heard Mario speak so much.. and such varied amount of voice samples! I really liked that.. I was kinda saddened at the fact that there weren't any classic levels.. And the controls felt a bit.. eh-like... But I still enjoyed it. I played DK94 again for a bit to remind myself of how it was back then.. And I realized how much I loved the controls. And the triple handstand jump was actually useful back then! In the new game, it's useful, but not if you're trying to quickly reach something while being stuck in a perilous position. After playing some more of DK94, I find out that I felt some of the puzzles felt like a chore to me. Meanwhile, the puzzles in MvsDK felt very fun... Spoiler: I enjoyed the expert levels and plus worlds a lot more than the normal six worlds. I was amazed to see that they jammed all those levels... I think there's more than 114 levels.. excluding the boss ones, and the expert levels. I completely loved the puzzles in the expert and plus levels. It felt very refreshing... |
