Here's something for you to try. Put in the combination and open it as normal. Close it again, turn it back to zero, then turn it back to the last number in the combination. Can you open it again? (Might have to pull somewhat hard, but not like ripping it apart.) It works on mine, and because of it someone stole 2 bucks from my locker. It's about 3 years old, and is now officially retired - replaced by a different brand. I'm thinking I might actually just put a key lock on it instead.

Truth be told, this is why I prefer key locks. One less combo for you to worry about, and only you can undo the thing. Makes life simpler for me...

But key locks can be picked, as opposed to combo-only locks which can't. And I don't think someone is going to bring acoustic gear to break into your locker

Ah, some people have told me that they know how to open like normal combonation locks, like Master brand or something. It involves like listening for a click or something as you are turning it. Never heard of a Dudley lock though.

This is just some info I found on it for others wondering what they are too.

When closing a combo lock, ALWAYS turn the lock to the right past 0 a few times after you close it. That's what I do, and it works, but then I never keep anything interesting in my locker.

One of my lockers in school, I forget what year, would open if I kept it on the last number without turning it, all the other lockers would not. Which made it easy for me to grab books quickly. I just never kept anything of value in there.

Something says me that it is supposed to do that... like a backdoors on computers or something.

I don't see the need for combination locks thought, unless you have the ability to lose keys you should have a regular key lock.

I heard that we were getting lockers on our school. Then 7 months later, nothing happened.

I don't really use locks, you see. Fuck, I lost the key to my own room (It was unlocked when I lost it. It's still lost).

Who the hell picks a school locker lock? There are books and papers in there, really exciting *NOT*. A dude in my class had the locker "door" kicked in.. that was at least sorta cool xP.

My locker happens to be surrounded by empty lcokers in a hallway off in the depths of the school far away from anything (Stupid random locker assignmetns), so I dont even have time between classes to fiddle with a lock.. But no one goes down in that part of the school anyway

Gah, in the Varsity locker room, there is a wall full of lockers, mostly broken ones, but serviaceable ones are still around. With mine, the top locker is ripped back, so people can reach in, and perhaps take stuff. So my lock basically has no purpose. It does make for a handy tray though. (you have no idea what I'm talking about)

With my school's lockers, they don't work too good. They don't change the combo, so kids can open their old lockers. Not to mention the fact that if you pull up on the handle enough, the locker will open.

No, but the fact that someone was in there, not to mention left their damn garbage in it does.
I do plan to switch to a key lock, as soon as I get it back. (I lent it to someone to use for their bike.)

I think most combo locks have backdoors like that, but I seriously doubt it'd be so simple. Usually there's a way (if you're really good, like a locksmith) to find one digit in the code, from which you can get the rest with some crazy math. It's not exactly easy to do quickly. (Though they don't really need them anyway; if you absolutely must open it, you can always just cut it off. )

Why you never give out your school combo:

Over the summer, someone had someone else's combo. When everyone got back, the school reeked. It seems that that someone put a fish in the locker last year, and it fermented over the summer.

The locks at my high school were combo locks with a master-key bypass in the back, so that janitors would be able to open locks that way rather than cutting them off. A side effect was that me and a friend of mine were able to open any locker in the school in 20 seconds or less. I never actually broke into people's lockers that way, though.. we just took a couple broken locks off of unused lockers.

For any good combination lock, i.e. a Master one, you can't find out the combination if you just have the lock without opening it up. The method of finding the first digit and using math for the combo doesn't work anymore, mainly because you can't find the first digit like you used to be able to.

A lot of the students in my school rig their lockers by putting a pencil in the inside of the lock so the lock doesn't catch. I used to do that until I one day slammed the locker door so hard the pencil snapped in half.

Another thing about combination locks: some of them have a failsafe "dent" in them. As you'd guess, it's a visible dent in the lock itself. Essentially, it's for an emergency situation where a lock desperately must be removed. A focused pressure on the dent (ie: chisel+hammer) will imediately destroy the mechanisms, opening the lock and leaving it pretty much useless. These are the types of locks we have to use at my school (although the rule's not very strictly enforced, and I'm pretty sure not many folks know about the dents...). It's a bit of a shot to my sense of privacy.

I can't really remember, but I believe they also have those standard keyholes on the backs of them, in case the principal ever wanted to get into my stuff for some reason.

Dudley locks are standard fare for Canadian schools, at least in Ontario. In fact, you can't have a locker unless you have a Dudley certified lock. At least in my whacked out school.

I've found ways of breaking almost any combo lock. I've gotten very, very good at it
