These don't alter gravity, but do like they do in Luigi's Mansion. These blocks will have Mario walk on the celing instead of the ground. All enemies will remain the same. I think this would be hard but I thouth this would be a good idea.

That would be cool... but why couldn't they alter gravity temporarily?

Yeah, let's do an ungodly amount of ASM hacking to make a full set of Mario Graphics, simply flipped upside down, another set where he flips upside down, AND get it to load both at the proper moments! Sounds like fun!

You wouldn't need to make any new graphics, just flip his normal ones upside down. The SNES can do it without any problems. Any new graphics would just be a bonus.

I think that the hard part would be making the game read the colision stuff for all the various ground types while upside down.

Naw, I wouldn't think so..

But, getting the sprite to flip, and look normal, yeah...

I was honestly just think about this today while playing megaman!! I think it was megaman 5 for NES and there is this level that when you pass arrows mega man flips upside down. I thought it would be cool to do that in SMW.

Sprite hacking is the least of the worries. As has already been said, it would require godly ASM hacking to code reverse gravity.. mostly for jumping and the like.

I meantioned this idea before, but none of the ASM hackers ever responded to it.

Flip sprite: Possible
Alter gravity: I have no idea if it's possible
Change the map16 (aka colision): Totally possible
Sprite hacking would not be required btw.

If anyone can find the game's code for making Mario fall (IE when he walks off a cliff) and jump, I could probably do it, but I wouldn't expect it to be glitch-free.

I found a location that I think might be in the area of Mario's programming.
780B is the Hex Address that says what Music to Play when Mario Dies, and I'm thinking that the rest of his Data may be in the same area. I believe this because I know that there has to be a function that tells the game to play the Dieing Music whenever he gets killed, so there's obviously some programming for Mario in that area.

Also, here's the Ram Address that controls his Jump height: D7A6
I don't know if that really helps, but there it is anyway.
Note: D7A5 also seems to affect the way he jumps. It makes him fly up when the Jump Button is pressed (setting lower value makes him bounce in the air a lot, and the higher values make him bounce less, and he travels a farther distance in between each bounce).

I think it would take a lot of work and ASM hacking to alter gravity.

Well, with gravity blocks -- the general idea's already been done.
I know it's not the same type as you describe, but there is Some type of gravity block, BMF made it. IIRC (too lazy to open the readme) there are 3 configurable blocks and one normalizer. You'd have to get info from him, er.

Since I never played Super Luigis Mansion I don't really know how cool it is so can't comment on it. But what I think would be cool is if you could use those red trianle things that are against the wall to run upside down inside of just up walls. You could make Mario do some loopdeloops and stuff.

That just changes your jumping height/speed. We're talking actually falling upward, even when you're standing still, as if all gravity were reversed. There's tiles in Luigi's Mansion and Sonic Adventure 2 that do this (you stand on the celing), it's pretty neat. (SA2 also has some that flip it sideways so you stand on the wall; this could probably be done if you had it modify your X position instead of Y, but the scrolling engine would probably take a fit. )

As i said, HH, i know it's not the same type he's talking about, i just thought i'd bring it up, i'm aware of the general point of the topic -- it could have some pertinence, though i doubt it. Though, i would like to see the blocks described come to fruition.

That would be rather easy. I mean, it's only reversing the gravity and the jump vector, and setting the vflip flag in the OAM or its RAM mirror. Although, as for yet, I haven't tried.
