As has been stated several times in this thread already, I think the biggest factor in the decline in rumors (If there even has been such a decline) is the Internet. It's a lot easier to relay information via the Internet than through paper magazines or what-have-you. It effectively eliminated the necessity of having to repeat the hoax yourself to see if it was true or not.

I think my all-time personal favorite hoax/joke/whatever was EGM's 1992 April Fool's Day joke of "Fight Sheng Long in Street Fighter II". Yes, II. The process involved something rediculous and physically impossible, like fighting M. Bison to a 10-round (Note that SFII only had a maximum of four rounds) hitless draw or something.

Two things made it great: 1. In that same issue, they had a "spot the April Fool's Day joke" contest. The information for it was printed directly underneath this "trick". 2. a Hong Kong magazine actually believed it and reprinted it, without permission. EGM's response was "That'll teach them to use our material without our permission..."

EGM had some of the most well-done April Fools tricks. The Sheng Long one was tremendous, mainly because people looked at the screenshots and thought "Oh, wait, this might be real!" - and then they go to the arcade and fail miserably.

I also liked the cute one they did where you could play as Simon Belmont in TNMT2.

Honestly many people acted like asses back then against me, becuse they didn't belive me... "IT'S FROM GAMEFAQS! GAMEFAQS IS FOR STUPID PEOPLE AND IT'S FALSE BECUSE IT'S FROM GAMEFAQS!" "YOUR ARE A MORON FOR BELIVING THIS!"

I was so close leaving the board for that... (I took the insults pretty seriously back then... heck I still feel little angry how people reacted against me ) and well I had also a proof video but none downloaded it/had the right codec for it.

I was pretty much unknown back then, and my spelling wasn't the best... so it's still somewhat understandable why people didn't belive me...
And the triforce in ocarina of time, Ariana fooled alot of people back then. But I wasn't around when it happened just saw a article about it a few months after it happened. And you do get one part of the triforce in Ocarina of time... triforce of courage.
