If there's a book for the course, reading the book can be a good idea. I never really read the books for my courses though, I just read the reviews at the end of the chapters right before the exam, and I listen to what the teacher says during classes.

The first thing to do is to just listen in class, and then you just have to find the best way for you to remember it when the exam comes.

I never needed to study through school, except for the HSC, but I found that writing notes and then notes from those notes... plus a few practise essays, got me through just fine. Practise essays are damn near essential.

The best way is to listen well in class and study properly throughout the school year. 70% of what you'll need on tests can be learned just by listening properly in class, the rest is studying. Studying the week before exams is never a good idea. Lots of people do it and get bad grades, then they get pissed off because "they studied so much"

Kiwi has the best idea. If you just listen in class you won't even need to write down notes. You just kinda sit there and absorb the information and then a day or two before the test review the book briefly and you'll be relaxed for the test and you'll be able to do well. That's what I'm going to do in college cause there's really no need to do that in HS. All I do is sit in class and listen, sometimes not listen, and get As, but that's probably not going to work next year, so I guess I'll have to open up a textbook or two.

I havent studied or done any homework (at home) all year. And my GPA is 3.8, i I have whats called photographic memory but its not that super kind. I can just remember eveything the teachers talk about to some detail that I can pass every test with an 80% or higher thats why I never study.

The best way is to simply pay attention in class. I pay attention, and then I don't really have to study to get good grades.

I listen in class and everything..I've gotten A's and B's and a C in math now..not going to mention the F in chem do to my hatred towards that class. All those other grades are without studying on tests..but now I have started!! I'm going to cram more before my last day of my final in math. I studied last night to. We get 2 days like the seniors so Im taking advantage of the going home and studying after seeing whats on the test. The most effective way is just listening in class llike others have said. I dont study as often as I should, if I did I'd have all A's..well higher A's. I study when it's a difficult test like the Finals but that's about it. I wish I had a photographic memory thingy

Well my exams are finally finished, for now, and I must say that a lot of your advice helped. I have learned a lot from these exams though, like not to underestimate the difficulty of an Extension Maths exam (I hardly studied for it and paid severely)
So thanks for all the ideas and I'll keep them in mind when my next exams come.

When it's a subject I'm not really familiar in, I literally take notes that are longer than the pages I got the information from and study those until I can read them with my eyes closed. Then I look at them again like 5 or 10 minutes before a quiz/test.

I never stress out about any test and I seem to be doing fine. I never even studied for the ACTs and I got a 22.

Ditto with me and standardized tests, Sion. I'm not sure if it's because I'm intelligent, a good test taker, or some of both, but I did extremely well on the SATs and ACTs, and continue to do well on tests without learning/studying the material.
