Teddylot: We seem to be on a role because . . . you're correct! *confetti* Announcer: Oop! Looks like time is running out until the next commercial! Teddylot: But I still think we can get one more question in. But first, the stats. Points: Geeogree -- 1 Point NSNick -- 1 Point Jagori -- 1 Point LostAuzzie -- 1 Point Screen of Shame: Kefka -- 0 Points Jarukoth -- 0 Points Kirby ATW -- 0 Points Teddylot: Looks like a quadruple tie to me. This is such a fierce game! Question 5: Duncan Drivel was asked how many ducks he had. "Well," he said, "they just walked down that path and I didn't actually count them, but I remember one duck in front of two ducks, another duck behind two ducks, and another duck between two ducks." How many ducks does Duncan have? Teddylot: Another easy one! Look out! It seems the harder ones are coming soon! *dun dun dun* |

Teddylot: Exactly! The ducks were walking single file. *confetti* Announcer: We now have the first contestant to break the Screen of Shame mark. Congratulations! Teddylot: That's a good thing. Points: Geogree -- 1 Point NSNick -- 1 Point Jagori -- 1 Point LostAuzzie -- 1 Point Kirby ATW -- 1 Point Screen of Shame: Kefka -- 0 Points Jarukoth -- 0 Points Teddylot: And now for our commercial break! Announcer: Remember, this show has been brought to you by Mistuchevy, Grace Centers of Hope, and readers like you. [/commercial] Teddylot: Welcome back, Squares! Are you all ready for the next set of questions? Awesome! Let's get the next question up there, announcer. Question 6: Even if they are starving, natives living in the Arctic will never eat a penguin's egg. Why not? Teddylot: Seems to me that this'll be a first come, first serve question. Go quickly! |

Teddylot: erm . . . no. Announcer: And you thought it would be easy. Teddylot: Well, it is! If I know the answer to the question, then it's easy. Announcer: Anyway, try again, players. |

Teddylot: That's correct, Ulty! Announcer: And just for the record, all birds lay eggs! Teddylot: Even if they can't fly. Points: Geeogree -- 1 Point NSNick -- 1 Point Jagori -- 1 Point LostAuzzie -- 1 Point Kirby ATW -- 1 Point Ultimanium -- 1 Point Screen of Shame: Kefka -- 0 Points Jarukoth -- 0 Points Teddylot: Boy, this is an intensely fierce situation, as we have a six way tie! This must be keeping the readers at home on the edge of their lazy boy recliners. Question 7: If a third of six is three, what would half of twenty be? Teddylot: It rhymes! Announcer: Ah, I love the fresh smell of math in the afternoon. Let's just hope whoever answers this question will break the ongoing tie! (edited by Teddylot on 05-16-04 05:32 PM) |

A third of six is not three so this must be a trick question the answer should be 10 but is the answer something like 6 and two thirds? (1/3 becomes 1/2 of 6 so 1/2 becomes 1/3 of 20)

I got 15. Explanation follows: 6 * (1/3) = 3 [6*(10/3)] * [(1/3)*(3/2)] = 3 * (10/3) * (3/2) 20 * (1/2) = 15 |

Just did it again, and I got 15 too: 6x/3 = 3 6x = 9 x = 9/6 = 3/2 20x = 20(3/2) = 30 30/2 = 15 |

Teddylot: *dizzy* Woah, numbers! I'm confused! Announcer: Despite the many attempts, NSNick breaks the tie with his answer. Here's the answer, for those of you who are number stupid, neatly placed on my notecards. Answer! Fifteen. The question is worded to make it confusing. Instead of considering how three can be a third of six, simply figure what three is one third of, which is nine. By using the same sort of reasoning, you know that half of twenty is ten and therefore ten is one third of thirty. Consequently, if three is one third of six, fifteen must be half of twenty. Teddylot: Woah, you lost me there with that smart speak of yours. Points: NSNick -- 2 Points Geeogree -- 1 Point Jagori -- 1 Point LostAuzzie -- 1 Point Kirby ATW -- 1 Point Ultimanium -- 1 Point Screen of Shame: Kefka -- 0 Points Jarukoth -- 0 Points Teddylot: You know, I figured NSNick would've answered that question. Question 8: Professor Quantum lives in Toronto. He drove to Montreal one morning to give a lecture. When Quantum finished the lecture, he got in his car and continued driving in the same direction that he drove earlier, and yet he managed to be home in Toronto by nightfall. How was this possible? Teddylot: Keep 'em comin'! Announcer: Don't forget your intros and/or the explanations to your answers! |

Uhh... hmmm If he was facing the same direction he drove in, then he was driving backwards? Other than that, I dont know. |

Before he gave his lecture, he was somewhere north-east of Montreal, like Quebec City (the question didn't say he started in Toronto, just that he lives there). After he finished, he continued driving south-west and ended up in Toronto.

He travelled past montreal by mistake and turned around therefore arriving travelling in the opposite direction as he had driven to the lecture in and so when he left he travelled back home in the same direction as he had arrived.

Teddylot: Jagori got it right! Our friend, Prof. Quantum actually started somewhere east of Montreal. Question 9: Two identical tanks full of water are being drained at the same time. One of the tanks has one - two centimeter circular drain outlet and the other has two - one centimeter circular drain outlets. Will one of the tanks empty faster than the other? Explain. Announcer: Remember, the first person to answer the question and an explanation gets the point. Teddylot: If you give the answer sans the explanation, your answer won't count. |

The one with the two-centimeter hole will drain faster. A circle with twice the radius has four times the area, so the tank with the 2cm hole has twice as much 'hole' as the one with two 1cm holes.

The one with the two one-centimeter holes could drain more quickly if one of the holes is above the water line, like this:
Since with this configuration, atmospheric pressure is no longer trying to keep the water inside the container. |
