| The scientific reason is that there are some recessive genes that are very harmful and/or lethal when combined with other recessive genes. If you mate within the family, you're more likely to have offspring with these recessive genes, and therefore genetic defects. | |||

| I thought there wasn't enough genetic difference so that they always became retarded. I think it is that you can only get the genes your parents have and since they are so simaller your brain doesn't have enough dna to go off of. This is at least what I heard. | |||

| No, Yiffy Kitten is right. You share 50% of your genes with your siblings/parents, so there's a much higher chance of your bad recessive genes getting paired up. That explains the practical taboo, but not really the cultural one. One can argue that the cultural one rose out of the practical one, but it probably still has an interesting anthropological history. Either way, incest isn't really that bad at face value. Only if you have children. And it brings into play lots of ethical questions when you start asking who can and can't have children, especially in the days of genetic testing... if you know that your offspring will have a 50% chance of some horrible genetic disorder, is it wrong to have children? Hm. |

| Actually, incest implies sexual relations with someone who is too closely related to marry (yes I looked it up). It doesn't not imply anything beyond that. The fact that a pregnancy resulting a relationship that is considered incest are likely result in children with these defects, is not the same. And as you know, pregnancy can be prevented. | Well, on the subject of pologamy, I think the reason that is not a common thing is because as humans, we are naturally jealous. So if we fall in love with someone, we want them all to ourselves, usually. It's actually a basic instinct; designed to preserve our own genes and pass them on without being interfered by any other. Like with lions when they kill the young of a former head of a pride if they take over. Personally I can't comment too much on the subject of incest because I don't have a sister. | Sure, I fantasized about my sister when I was younger. My sister's a few years older than me (4), and she's a very attractive woman. I grew out of it though when I got older.
