(Maybe this should be stickied.....)

Well. As I've noticed, many pointless newbie threads have been made. Such as, "Where's the Map16 editor?", "How do I change where Mario moves on the map?"...countless others. This is a thread, FAQ that hopefully will prevent future pointless newbie threads.

1. Lunar Magic, Itself
1. Lunar Magic has everything you would need for SMW editing. EVERYTHING. Don't bother with YY-CHR, or all those other programs.
2. Graphics and Appearance
1. YOU CANNOT EDIT MARIO WITH THE 8X8 EDITOR. You can view them, but no edit them. Many experienced SMW hackers still don't know this!
2. The Map16 editor is included in Lunar Magic.
3. You cannot edit the animated graphics. Only the normal graphics. If you want new animations, make them with the animation feature (the brick block button).
3. Secret Codes
1. Many people say, "It's nowhere in the help file!!! HELP ME!!!!!!!!!". Well, IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE HELP FILE!!!!!! THEY'RE SECRETS!!!!!!!!!
2. There is no "Secret Code Entry" window or anything. You simply type it in the designated window.
3. For more on this, see the Secret Code thread.

Sorry if I sounded sarcastic, but these things should be obvious.
I'll edit this post in the future to include more newbie help questions.

*EDIT* I know there is a useful resources for SMW hackers, but that's not for newbies.

No.... just no. If you want to edit GFX, PLEASE U"SE THIS. Its far easier to use than all those "other programs" You say....

And Im pointing to my signature for the real newbies guide.

Edit: Sorry if I sounded rude... but most of these newbie questions would be answered if people ACTUALLY READ THE HELP FILE......

Most of my newbie questions deal with things that aren't in the help file. The "competition" thing wasn't. Any info about secret codes wasn't. And the 8x8 editor is easier to use than YY-CHR. You should only use that if you're planning on editing Mario, or using it for another game.

Easier for YOU to use, maybe. All us other peoples who are used to loading several dozen files at once and being able to copy and paste multiple things at once (and use the windows clipboard) will have a much easier time with "those other programs".

YY-CHR has many nifty little features that Lunar Magic doesn't, which is why I often use both. I also use TLP when I want to quickly copy between two different files, but that's about the only time I use it. Don't debunk programs because you don't use them, especially if a lot of other people do.

I started this thread to help newbies. It's done just the opposite.
Please close it, someone. Or if you guys think it shouldn't be closed....

Good thread idea, but I didn't find your "answers" very helpful at all. If I were a newbie, I'd be just as lost as before, if not moreso.

I think the best way to do a topic like this would be to make a running Q&A...newbies ask questions, experienced hackers answer them. Didn't we try this on the old board?
