.62 * 25 + .1 * 52 + 68 * .3 + x * .35 > 70

15.5 + 5.2 + 20.4 + x * .35 > 70

41.1 + x * . 35 > 70

x * .35 > 28.9

x > 82.57

basically ti's a bunch of grades

the 62 % is worth 25 points
the 52 % is worth 10 points
the 68 % is worth 30 points
and the Final x is worth 35 points
the desired result is greater than a 70 which is a C

I'm pretty sure that math is right please confirm.....

well I know I did the actual math part right

the part I wanted to double check was the formula itself

Yeah, looks good to me. Odd how you divided the grade by 100 on the first one and for the next two divided the point value by 100, but it'll work either way. So yeah, it's all gravy.

well I did the actual grade percent

.62 * overall 100 point value

when you multiply it it puts it into the final point value for that grade.....

and..

[20:12] PBagentU: http://www.forums.networkchaos.net/thread.php?id=9992&page=0#162767
[20:13] ErkDog: heh replied
[20:13] ErkDog: don't become a math teacher
[20:14] PBagentU: multiplying comes before dividing
[20:14] PBagentU: so youd combine .35 to x
[20:14] PBagentU: .35x
[20:14] ErkDog: *sigh*
[20:14] PBagentU: divide .35
[20:14] PBagentU: lol
[20:14] PBagentU: i know what your asking
[20:14] ErkDog: .35x is the same thing as .35 x
[20:14] ErkDog: * x
[20:14] ErkDog: and ....
[20:14] ErkDog: when you solve an equation
[20:14] ErkDog: you subtrac tfirst
[20:14] ErkDog: you can't divide
[20:14] ErkDog: until you have nothing but multiplication left
[20:14] ErkDog: if you have 10 x + 10 = 20
[20:14] ErkDog: you get 10 x = 10
[20:15] ErkDog: then you get x = 1
[20:15] ErkDog: plug x back in
[20:15] ErkDog: 10 x 1 + 10 = 20
[20:15] ErkDog: 10 + 10 = 20
[20:15] ErkDog: 20 = 20
[20:15] PBagentU: meh
[20:15] ErkDog: meh indeed
[20:15] PBagentU: i need a scanner
[20:15] PBagentU: so i can show you the math i did
[20:16] PBagentU: but i just did a month's worth of work for me right thar
[20:16] ErkDog: type it in
[20:16] ErkDog: type it in
[20:16] PBagentU: oh boy
[20:16] PBagentU: ok
[20:17] PBagentU: .62*25+.1*52+68*.3+X*.35>70
[20:18] PBagentU: 15.5+5.2+20.4+.35x>70
[20:18] PBagentU: 20.7+20.4+.35x>70
[20:18] PBagentU: 41.1+.35x>70
[20:19] PBagentU: .35x/.35x = 1 , 70 / .35 = 200
[20:19] PBagentU: so the problem now is
[20:19] PBagentU: 41.1+x>200
[20:20] PBagentU: 41.1-41.1 = 0
[20:20] PBagentU: 200 - 41.1=158.9
[20:20] PBagentU: x=158.9
[20:20] PBagentU: so reverting back to the original problem
[20:21] PBagentU: 41.1+.35 * 158.9 >70
[20:21] PBagentU: .35*158.9= 55.615
[20:22] ErkDog: dood you don't solve for x
[20:22] ErkDog: then plug x back in
[20:22] ErkDog: solving for x IS the answer
[20:22] ErkDog: and actually
[20:22] ErkDog: you CAN do it that way
[20:22] ErkDog: but what you did wrong
[20:22] PBagentU: 41.1+55.615=96.715
[20:22] PBagentU: oh
[20:22] PBagentU: what
[20:22] ErkDog: when you divided by .35
[20:22] ErkDog: you should have divied 41.1 by .35 too
[20:22] ErkDog: then subtracted that number from both sides
[20:22] PBagentU: fuckfukcfukcukukcukcukfukcukf
[20:22] ErkDog: if you divide you have to do it to EVERYTHING
[20:22] ErkDog: tha'ts whyh
[20:22] ErkDog: you get the variable by itself first if you can
[20:23] ErkDog: the only order of operations you have to follow
[20:23] ErkDog: when solving equations
[20:23] ErkDog: is parentheses
[20:23] ErkDog: and you can get aroudn them too for example
[20:23] ErkDog: 2(10+x) = 10
[20:23] ErkDog: 20 + 2x = 10
[20:23] PBagentU: mm
[20:23] ErkDog: 2x = -10
[20:23] ErkDog: x = -5
[20:23] ErkDog: OR....
[20:23] ErkDog: 2(10+x) = 10
[20:23] ErkDog: 10+x = 5
[20:23] ErkDog: x = -6
[20:23] ErkDog: x = -5
[20:24] PBagentU: lol ok
[20:24] PBagentU: thanks for the lesson MR. Erk
[20:24] PBagentU: i learned more today then I have in the last 2 years
[20:24] ErkDog: and you know I am required by NCF by laws... to post this buffer showing everyone 1) how poonish you are 2) how smart I am
[20:24] PBagentU: lol
[20:25] PBagentU: some day i will own you
[20:25] PBagentU: and it will be a glorious day
[20:25] ErkDog: possibly... but not today
[20:25] PBagentU: and the angels will sing my name throughout the heavens
[20:25] ErkDog: and never in math
[20:25] PBagentU: lol
[20:25] PBagentU: well in that case
[20:25] PBagentU: im going to find something to eat.

Erk: No, if you want to see MATH used for a real PURPOSE, check out this thread where I did calculations on camshaft timing and compression ratios
