Yo yo. I'm back with another one of my surveys... w00t. I seem to like doing research via online serveys. This time an anime one.

This is a survey I'm going to be using in an article I'm writing for a creative non-fiction class I'm in. It may show up published on a couple websites as well, who knows. I will not be using your screen names or any other way or identifying you in the article. The information will be given as strictly anonymous if quoted at all. You don't have to answer all the questions, just the once you feel comfortable answering.

I'm also going to post this up at some other anime message boards, so please only answer it once if you see it elsewhere.

So let's get to it, shall we?

1. Age:
2. Location (just country is fine):
3. Gender*:
4. Do you consider yourself to be an anime fan?
5. If yes, how much of one? (if no, why are you answering this? o.o)
6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?
7. Why or why not?
8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are?
9. Why or why not?
10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?
11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not.
12. Why or why not?
13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to?
14. Why or why not?
15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think?
16. Why or why not?
17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?

Okay, that's it. Do the best you can, and if you've any questions, feel free to ask. Thank you for you time.

1. Age: 17
2. Location: USA
3. Gender*: Male
4. Do you consider yourself to be an anime fan?: Yes
5. If yes, how much of one?: Not as much as others
6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?: Yes, usually.
7. Why or why not?: I saw Sailor Moon a bunch of times. I wanted to gouge out my eyes.
8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are? Nope.
9. Why or why not?: It seems to remain within a certain sect of people.
10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? --: You can stop right there. If a certain ninja based anime was ever to go mainstream, Trunxy, a friend of mine, and myself will brutally massacre everyone who associates with the americanized (and most likely crappy) translation/bastardization of said anime.
11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime?: NO.
12. Why or why not? Geekiness is an illusion created by the mainsteam.
13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to? Yes, and I can.
14. Why or why not? I can show them my friend who is on the wrestling team, ranked 5th in the state, has a girlfriend, and is a fan of Hellsing.
15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think? Yes.
16. Why or why not? Mainstream = Not Geeky. In general, anyway.
17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?: Don't be hatin, or do otakus have to choke a bitch?

1. Age:

2. Location (just country is fine):

USA, Peoria, IL

3. Gender*:

Male

4. Do you consider yourself to be an anime fan?

[points to layout] zat obvious?

5. If yes, how much of one?

I can't say I'm a complete otaku...just because I'm only centered around a few animes and I don't really have the much manga/anime on stock myself...so...high fanboy / low otaku...I guess...I dunno where you'd class me. Wannabe...there you go.

6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?

Eh...depends...moreso it's for Shounen...just for the sheer fact I've go for the fighting stuff a lot more than most...but sometimes I'll get around to the more 'girly' forms of art...personally I've been looking at Chobits lately. [shrugs]

7. Why or why not?

Uh...answered that...fighting. There's swords. You'll love it.

8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are?

Excessively...I'm helping the younger kids open up to it because now my sister and her girl friends go around saying which anime character is their husband...I believe most of my sister's fans stem around the more serious type (and sometimes evil)...often times though I've seen her go for Sesshomaru from Inuyasha quite a bit.

9. Why or why not?

I did it again...look above.

10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?

Kiddy...more than likely I would assume just because of the fact that it's a 'developing' subculture and I think that it'll stay isolated like that but not really shunned upon except with the idea that it's kiddy. [shrugs] whatever.

11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not.

Geeky no. Kiddy yes. A lot of people are going to say 'grow up' to this sort of thing. [shrugs] They're shallow to the idea and I don't give a damn...they can go do drugs or whatever...I don't care...I like my anime and they don't like it? I don't care. I have my own thoughts and beliefs and I pride myself on it...other people's opinions be damned.

12. Why or why not?

I did it agaaaaain...like I said...people will always bitch over something.

13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to?

Nope.

14. Why or why not?

Because I wouldn't care one way or the other...personally...the whole stereotype deal is something more of a class...any negative they're trying to put on it I usually tend to come out positive in the end because I know I'm not the only one among millions.

15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think?

Doubt it. Stereotypes will always be around no matter what.

16. Why or why not?

See above.

17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?

It's a form of television like your reality TV shows. If you hate anime as much as I hate reality TV, and I do, but you like the opposite...then you should know that you shouldn't throw stones. Everyone has their 'guilty pleasures' or whatever...no sense in making an idiot out of yourself with a bunch of others if you can't back it up.

>>>

Basically...if you're worried about the whole 'stereotype' deal...just remember...you aren't the only one out there...and yea...maybe I am a 19-year-old who like watching cartoonies...hell I knew people older than I that watched Peewee Herman back in the old days...of course that got a lot of points for his character but in the end...who really cares? We're not in high school anymore...but that doesn't mean our interests should die either...and we should respect the fact that no one gives a damn about someone taking shots at things they hold most dear to them...even if it looks/feels corny.

4. Do you consider yourself to be an anime fan?
Yes

5. If yes, how much of one? (if no, why are you answering this? o.o)
A lot...probably because I have a penchant for all things Japanese

6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?
I'm more of a shojo kind of guy but that doesn't mean I don't like any shounen. I haven't gotten into manga that much

7. Why or why not?
I dunno, never really thought about it...might be cause I dig chick flicks . As for the shounen stuff, DBZ is a bad standard to use so it could be the case that I like it too.

8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are?
Yes

9. Why or why not?
A lot of cartoons now on national TV are anime. I believe 10 years ago there weren't that many.

10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?
I believe the future of anime is here to stay. However, many of the shows that come here are horribly done. So, I guess that is the americanization effect for you.

11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not.
Not really.

12. Why or why not?
i guess it depends on how you use anime. if you use anime where it is essentially your life, then I guess that anime would be a geeky pastime.

13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to?
Hmm..that latter part of that statement has surprised me.

14. Why or why not?
I never considered the stereotype going down that far. As a result, I can't decide for 13.

15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think?
Of course.

16. Why or why not?
Geeks are considered to be out of the norm with society. As a result, if all of mainstream society watches anime, then it would be stupid to "single" out people for something you do yourself.

17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?
Anime has a more fulfilling entertainment that reality shows and most dramas and sitcoms can't ever do.

5. I am an otaku that can appreciate anime but still do the same for other cultures. I love anime and stuff but I am not someone who like wishes I was born in Japan or something. I have seen a lot of anime in my time and I know a lot about them especially gundam. (I have been "studying" Gundam since before it came out in USA) I am an OG, and have learned and watched a lot of anime via my bro, except Gundam.
6. I guess I'm more of a shounen guy, but I do like my shoujo here and there.
7. Because my two favorite genres of anime are comedy and action. Sometimes I enjoy a mix of the two, which are more noticeably found in shounen than shoujo titles.
8. Yes
9. Well, it might be mine and Jarukoth's fault. You see, I was obsessed with Naruto during the summer that I told someone about the anime. I had read it in the past year when shonen jump USA released it. Also, the titles on Cartoon Network are where a lot of people watch them. But it doesn't matter, because they're all still newbs.
10. I fear that the future is already here. I can tell when these newbs talk about these things at school. And the funny thing is when people at our school try to say "Naruto". It's not that hard, people! Just say it like they do in the show!
11. Yes, but it's less of geeks than simply "weird kids".
12. It depends because people that fit into these categories talk about the titles non-stop and try watching it and buying their stuff. But then again, I don't believe in stereotypes, so meh.
13/14. Not really, because it's kind of funny. I myself don't really need people to know I watch anime a lot. It's really stupid though, how people think of others like that.
15/16. History ALWAYS repeats itself (something that we learn from Gundam) and no matter how mainstream anime will get, stereotypes will still exist. I mean, within anime, there are stereotypes too. (Gundam freaks are totally obsessed with Gundam, know everything about it, etc.)
17. People should treat anime/animated things as any other art form. It should not be shunned because it's different from other things.

7. Violence isn't neccesary to make a good anime.
8. Definately, during the last years.
9. Most of them watch mainstream anime such as DBZ and other crap, they only watch it for the action. However most people still associates anime with sailor moon (which is quite much the only series that ever went here). Therefore many still thinks Sailor Moon is the only anime, they dont got a clue..
10. My hope is that it will stay more underground so we'll still get SOME good series, not just action crap for the masses.
11. Somewhat geeky still I guess. But I dont care, I love anime.
12. It's considered geeky to sit in front of the computer and watch cartoons, I guess.
13. Nope, special people are attracted to anime, they're more fun to talk to.
14. Watch above.
15. We're not that stereotype, but I dont want it becoming more mainstream.
16. I dont believe the stereotype that exists will cease to exist if it becomes more mainstream, no..
17. Watch at least some episodes, and you'll understand. Anime is so much more than just "cartoons"

3. Gender*: Female

4. Do you consider yourself to be an anime fan? Yes

5. If yes, how much of one? (if no, why are you answering this? o.o)
Out of the series that I am currently collecting, and have collected (Macross, Eva, Trigun, Ranma 1/2), I consider myself to be a serious fan.

6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?
Shonen 90% of all my collection have mechs in them

7. Why or why not?
I like action and deep plot depth. I love the technology and background to an anime.

8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are?
Absolutely.

9. Why or why not?
Because more people are becoming curious about anime.

10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?
Anime is an interest for geeks, people who simply love a well told story and film lovers. I'm between the three.

11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not.
It can be, if you're really, obsessively into it.

12. Why or why not?
Anything you are into obsessively can be considered geeky. I myself love to indulge myself in the background of my favorite titles.

13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to?
Do nothing.

14. Why or why not?
Even though the stereotype is misleading, because myself and most of my friends are involved in long term relationships, I don't really care. The stereotype at least represents me as someone who is into anime, and I'm proud of that.

15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think?
No.

16. Why or why not?
Most people who attracted to alternative media are bright enough to disregard stereotypes.

17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?
"I think American Idol and Survivor are trash. I watch anime. If you want to see something different, something clever, something thought provoking, I'll be happy to intoduce you"

Yeah.

5. If yes, how much of one? (if no, why are you answering this? o.o)
I'd want to consider myself as a devoted fan, but I haven't seen enough.

6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?
I suppose shojo.

7. Why or why not?
I like watching some of the comical anime.

8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are?
No.

9. Why or why not?
I hardly know anyone around where I live that take anime seriously.

10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?
It's gonna become popular.

11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not.
Eh...I guess i'm a bit on both.

12. Why or why not?
It's on TV now. They show tons different types of anime. Theres still a group of undiscovered anime to be dubbed and broadcasted.

13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to?
No.

14. Why or why not?
The people who do watch it are normally people who i can discuss with. me and my friends usually end up mingling with the other people.

15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think?
No.

16. Why or why not?
There hasn't really been a big "You geek" or "You nerd" type of thing around where I live.

17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?
Anime is much more than what you think it is. Take some time off from your other shows to see what it is like.

not a huge one, but I like it (I don't have the money to be obsessive )
6. Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]?
No, not really.

8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are?
not really
9. Why or why not?
It's still not viewed as "cool" where I'm from.
10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?
Probably remain a "geeky" pastime. Pokemon didn't even get too popular around here.
11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not.
Where I live, yeah.
12. Why or why not?
Most of my class just thinks of it as "cartoons" I think

Do you generally associate yourself with the shounen/shojo anime/manga genre of your gender (shounen = stereotypically "male", containing action, adventure, fights, etc. [examples: Naruto, InuYasha, DBZ]; shojo = stereotypically "female", containing romance, humor, "cutesy" characters [examples: Fushigi Yuugi, Chobits, Sailor Moon]? Yes, pretty much.

7. Why or why not? The characters, plot, and action just appeals to me more.

8. Do you think anime is becoming more mainstream where you are? Ohhh yes.

9. Why or why not? I say it's because of Cartoon Network mostly. It's been very exposed over the last several years.

10. What do you see for the "future" of anime where you are, that is, will every show become as popular as Pokemon? "Gotta jutsu 'em all" maybe? o.O Or will anime remain a somewhat-underground "geeky" pastime?

I think that it will continue to grow more and more popular just like video games did but I doubt it will ever make it that far.

11. Speaking of stereotypes, is anime still a geeky pastime? This may tie in the "becoming mainstream" question, but perhaps not. Somewhat, yes.

12. Why or why not? It's still just "cartoons" to some people and a lot of them don't think that animation is a viable or decent way to get entertainment if you're a "non-geek" type person.

13. If you could get rid of that stereotype of only geeks watching anime, the geeks that can't get girlfriends and can't get a life, would you want to? No.

14. Why or why not? If someone truly feels that way, then they obviously don't know a think about us. Thats something they need to find out for themselves.
I for one don't care what people label me.

15. Will anime becoming more mainstream get rid of that stereotype, you think?
It just might.

16. Why or why not? Look at what happened with video/PC games. Way back when, it was just a geek thing and people would get made fun of for it. But today, everyone and their mother owns either a PS2, Gamecube, or X-Box. Now it's a thing for all walks of life. If anime becomes more mainstream, I believe the same thing will happen.

17. Lastly, if there was anything you could say to the general mainstream television audience (think American Idol and Survivor fans here if need be) regarding anime and its sometimes-associated stereotypes, what would it be?

If you think American Idol and Survivor are good shows but dismiss anime, then you truly know nothing of good entertainment. Anime isn't all "kiddy" stuff like Pokemon and other shows such as that. Many anime movies/series/etc have very very deep and mature plots to them that really put other forms of entertainment to shame.
