AIM works for me, not that I chat with it enough to notice server problems and disconnecting and stuff.

AOL's dial up is alot cheaper than my dial up. Mine costed 65-60 US dollars per month...

My broadband costs 43 USD per month.

M'eh, I'm one of the few people who is not using the major ISP T-Com but a private provider
As for me, I'm using ISDN only, but my connection never got stuck, mostly it was my fault when it didn't work (Zone Alarm shut down my Internet connection until the next reboot or I was too fast while connecting and overwrote the password with the wrong one when attempted to connect), messengers work fine all ... but MSN in Trillian ... it disconnects me after less than two minutes
I already tried alternate messengers; Miranda IM might be good, but it crashes for me. Since I anyway don't have too much contacts on MSN but in AIM, I'll rather use Trillian since I like it much more than any other IM

I don't know of anybody who uses dial-up anymore... but thats just me. Dial-up is now obsolete. It has been for the past 5 years.

I use COX, and i like it better than any other connection because of the low price and the good connectivity.

I never had a problem with it before. I think cox has more than one class A IP address...

Let's all write a letter to AOL informing them of this chaos! I bet they'll be all "oh darnit, we hit the "act shitty" button! Ha! Ha!" and then they'll fix it and we can live happily ever after on a giant mushroom with uma thurman.

But they usually don't disconnect this often, nor globally.

I use Gaim, and have been on for a couple days for now without a problem. (it's rare that my computer is on for 2 days ! )

I don't know how you guys can stand Trillian. I tried it, but it doesn't support many AIM features, and disconnected me every two minutes. Really, really annoying. It went away within my first ten minues of Trillian experience.

Trillian supports what I need it to. File sending, buddy icons, chats, etc.

I might try GAIM one day especially since it'll run fine on my new PC. (On my old one... well, anything using SDK ran like crap on it.)

2.x Pro works fine over here, at least the version I have... *checks*

Yeah, 2.01. Probably because I installed that on here without having previously installed a 1.x version.

Ok I undertsand why people hate AOL but I mean really if you dont like it get another ISP
and if your parents get AOL and you cant convince them to get a new one too bad, I mean AOL offers a service whether its shitty or not your the one in the end who choose it, unless like I said your parents won't switch and my heart goes out to you people since I used to be like you.

Hmm well I liked Trillian alot but I dont use it as much as I used too.

BTW, GAIM dosen't have any file sending. At least not for MSN. I have only tried the MSN part of GAIM even if I have been logged in on AIM to.

I test the Linux version of Trillian, but my harddrive space is little scare on my Linux computer. I knew that I should have made that Linux partition abit bigger...

at least one of my friends online (Thaddeus) is stuck with dial-up. it may be obsolete, but cable/DSL lines aren't as ubiquitous as phone lines just yet.

back on topic: I haven't used IM programs in a long time, or even e-mail (unless required to, e.g. to sign up for something). IRC is suitable for real-time communication (in place of IM programs), and message boards for non-real-time communication (in place of e-mail).

if you do use IM programs, though, then if AIM sucks... *drum roll please* use a different IM protocol! There's MSN messenger, ICQ, a few others, and, IMO, the best of them all: Yahoo Messenger.

as for trillian, I stopped using that when the distinction between "fully-functional version" and "free version" was made.

*shakes head* way to read the thread big guy, we are talking about AOL: IM not the ISP itself.....

and Trillian still uses the AOL IM subsystem as does GAIM and every other AOL IM CLIENT

My ISP is most certainly NOT AOL. But AIM uses their server.
Erk: Same problem here. V1.x sucks (and yes, I often have a problem connecting to people, I usually have to start it from my end) but 2.0 was just horrible, I got rid of it in about 15 minutes.

Gaim supports all of the AIM features now without problems. File sharing, direct connect, invisibility, everything.

Other than being disconnected from Trillian literally ALL THE TIME, it didn't support file sharing, direct connection, or buddy icons. Plus, Trillian wouldn't connect to MSN at all. It plain sucked.

One thing that I don't like about Gaim is that the MSN protocol isn't complete, but at least it's usable.

I used to have AOL. It sure was faster than what I have now. It did freeze my comp a lot. Especially AOL 8.0. 7.0 didn't really bother much with it. Except I'd always get those little warning things. I think that was either the AOL or the Windows ME . Not sure though. I just didn't like how it screwed with my computer. Currently I have People PC and it is worse than AOL, at least AOL didn't disconnect me every 5-10 minutes but it had it's bad days.
