Its a photo diary of a trip through the "Dead Zone" around Chernobyl. Its a really good read, but its haunted me quite a bit - as I never knew what really happened, all through my life its just been a "nuclear meltdown" to me, i didn't know the full implications about it.

I hope you can enjoy this and be as enlightened about it as much as I have been, and spare a moment to think about those poor souls who have lost their lives to the disaster.

The place where the time is frozen.

I always wondered how a town looks like when it have been abonden for years. Now I know.

I was inside my mom when it happened, I wasn't born yet. But my mom have told me that she was worried about me when she heard about the meltdown.

Chernobyl lacked security, and had severeal constructions errors. Still it's creepy thinking on the thought if it happened again...

That is pretty chilling, seeing all those structures, and then to see them totally deserted.

I got goosebumps reading it.

Although I wouldn't say cool out loud or anything, it was really fascinating.

Cool just sort of seems out of place in this context.

I posted this in IRC a while ago... never thought about putting it on this board because I figured nobody would put forth the effort to read that.

Well, it just goes to show that you never can tell

The main thing that hit me was it was the day after my first birthday, and since knowing that (about 4 years ago) it always puts a dampener on my birthday celebrations

There's a contradictory statement if ever there was one - but not to single you out, Kitten Yiffer - everyone uses the reason that "Nuclear power is clean" in its defense. Well, I dont know of any other ways where the effects of making power last for thousands of years!

I'm not up on this, but has a movie been made out of it?

It would be gripping, to say the least.

You know the "sarcophagus" casing they use to cover the radiation with?
When they have to build a new one, what will happen if there is a construction fKitten Yiffer/accident occurs? Anyone within 500 miles is screwed?

KP: Depends on what type of accident. If it's the collapse of the old one, maybe 50 miles MAX would be affected, with maybe the first 2-3 miles being deadly or really dangerous. If you're talking about some type of explosion, it wouldn't be nuclear, just spread the radiation already there, so not as bad as the first. Maybe a 200 mile radius would be affected. But keep in mind that this area's already pretty barren anyway so it doesn't really matter.

There was a documentary sent for a few days ago, and there they acted like it was a movie to show what happened during the accident.
