I found insperation to do this poll from the GameFAQs NBMB(No Boss Mini-Boss for those who never heard about this) where the Brinstar Worm couldn't be decided if you can beat it or not(a NBMB run is collecting as many items as possible without fighting any bosses or mini-bosses(in Super Metroid, you could fight the Ridley in Ceres and the Bomb Trozo)). In my option, it's not a mini boss because you can escape the battle, but I'll put up a sepulation. ________________ Mini-Boss: Traps you in. One time only. Not a Mini-Boss: You can escape. ________________ If anyone can add to this, post away. |

You need to defeat Main Bosses. Mini-Bosses, however, are optional, so I'll go with Mini. |

If you don't have to fight it, but its tough, I'll go with mini-boss as well

Not really. There is the cocoon in Norfair you need to beat to get to Ridley.

SM_Gamer, I'm going to follow the template for the Supermetroid NBMB per deskjockey_. That is, even entering the room of/engaging a miniboss/boss constitutes fighting it. Ceres Ridley and Bomb Torizo are considered obligatory because, well, there's no way around them if you want to advance very far. It's like a no morphing ball run, the max percentage is maybe 1% but who cares about that? That said, when picking out which enemies are allowable to fight, they should be designated as to maximize the challenge and the appeal of the run. No one cares if your max NBMB is 5% because you didn't fight some piece of crap at the very beginning. |

Yes, of course it is a mini-boss. Why? Well, the main reason is quite simple... The music changes when you fight it. That's the general rule for bosses and mini-bosses, and it works well for most games. In some cases it doesn't quite work; Metroid 2, for example, but that's a relatively unique case. Not only that, but there is only one of him, and he is large and powerful. Definitely a mini-boss. Just because you can continue without defeating him doesn't stop him from being a mini-boss. You can *not* defeat Ridley at the start of Super Metroid but he's still a boss. There are other bosses in other games that you can fight and escape/not defeat, I'm sure. Super Mario 64, for example. You can fight, say... Whomp King, and choose not to defeat him and run away. Mini-bosses aren't necessarily optional, either... Some Zelda games, for example, have a slew of mini-bosses that you have to fight. ...This is such a nerdy arguement, heh. The bigger question is whether the two Imago Larva are mini-bosses or not, though. Not the one just before Imago itself, but the two other ones. |

I'd say it's a mini-boss, but split into many parts.

Ah, fair enough. I'd say they are mini-bosses though. Clearly not very difficult ones. But they have different music and you get locked in the room and they die in a way that suggests they're mini-bosses (and leave behind a bunch of health pick-ups). Plus they don't come back, so you only fight them both once... |

One word... Glitch. And I don't see how that changes my point... My point was that you could fight Ridley at the start and not defeat him (ie: make him run away), instead you could not hit him at all if you wished. |

Originally posted by MathOnNapkins Ok. If thats true then the only areas allowed are Brinstar and Norfair because going left after the missiles activate the boss battle, and Norfair is possible to explore(little of it) without the bombs. I'd have to say that the max percent with your thinking is 9%(1 missile and engry tank and the long beam in Brinstar and the Ice Beam and 4 missiles). EDIT:Typo.
