As some people on this board knows that I have autism and I have always wondered what causes it. I have seen commercials and looked at some sites that say that it is caused by mercury poisoning. I don't know if it is completely true but I have heard some doctors say that.

I am just wondering if you guys think it is true or not.

Autism is something so broad, it's a bit like the mental health equivalent of saying you have a "Stomach Bug", so a multitude of things may cause it. Some people in this country think the MMR vaccination causes autism. The thing is because autism is something realitively new (before the 70's anyone autistic would atomatically be classed as "retarded" and nothing more), it'll take us a while to understand what causes it.

I don't think that mercury poisoning could be the only cause, if it is a cause. I don't think that you could contract mercury in levels high enough to cause autism.

I don't know. There are so many chemicals and pollutants in our modern world it's hard to tell what causes what anymore.

I don't think anyone really knows exactly, but I remember in the past, they used to blame autism on "cold mothers". Kinda cruel.

I think you're right. I always thought that autism was a mutation in one of your genes. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but that's what I've always thought.

Actually, when you are born, you are given a shot (immunization) that is 49.5 mercury in weight. One out of 150 kids get Autism because of that.

Actually, I think that link has been discredited.

I've been to many various sites that state the same thing. to be exact, 5.
I don't remember which ones, but there were 5.
I had run into them because i was searching for symptoms of mercury poisoning. I had broke one of those thermostat things with the mercury in it. Not a thermometer, but... It broke, and it got on my hands.

No, Autism isn;t something you "Catch" but you "Develop" it instead, like ALtsheimers (sp?). Butr as I said before, Autism is so broad, I mean one aspect of it, alluded to here, Aspergers syndrome, isa mutation in your genes and it's congenital.

Like what Uncle Elmo said, it is a disorder that develops not a disease. If mercury poisoning does cause autism, then why don't doctors do anything about it and how come I just found out about it a few days ago and not farther back.

Should I just check with my doctor for mercury poisoning just to be safe?

I don't thinks it's Mercury poison. Well it could be actually.

Poisions cause mutations, Autism is caused of certain genes... thought there may be expections.

I have Aspberger's syndrome. And I know some people on this board that either have Autism or Aspberger.

But personally Aspberger syndrome is a totally diffrent thing from Autism, there is so many diffrences.

The autism / vaccination debate has been a recent thing, which is why there are so many articles out talking about it. But most recently, I believe, the link has been considerably weakened:

http://www.mercola.com/2004/mar/17/autism_vaccines.htm
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=30983
http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/03/03/retraction040303

etc. etc.

The only major difference is really the Asperger's Syndrome is a mild verson of autism. People with Asperger's Syndrome are more highly functional than people with autism. I have also thought of this question: Why is autism more common amongst boys than girls? So, therefore, it can't be mercury poisoning, right?

I have Asperger's Syndrome. And ADHD:PHT, and a mild form of dyslexia... Yeah, I'm really messed up.

ALright, met me re-iterate this...

Here's an analogy...

Autism is like having a virus,

While Aspergers is like having the flu.

Both are the same thing, just one is a mild form of the other. A LOT of people have autistic tendancies, more than you think.
