In my opinion, buying an Athlon 64 is better than buying a P4 with HT. Especially for you, Error - run x86-64 linux already out on an AMD 64 and you WILL have one of the fastest machines out there. Athlon 64's only lose to the top of the line Intel processors (The "Extreme Editions" with like 2mb cache). The Athlon FX's don't lose to any Intel processor!

Both my favorite distros support it.. Fedora / Gentoo.

Right now Im buying alot of add on crap for my birthday but I can ask for an AMD 64 and transfer all my hardware to a new box and run his box as a headless server.. >

It's a pretty good PC (AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.6ghz)..
