So, yeah, for the last few days, I've been participating in the Nationwide Norwegian Russ Celebrations. A Russ is a Norwegian High School Senior, and, just like any other country's Seniors, we do certain things to mark the end of our mandatory school (which isn't technically correct, since High School actually ain't mandatory here, but anyone who doesn't want to live on welfare the rest of their lives will go to High School). Anyway, even though there are a lot of Russ-festivities all through the year (such as, for instance, our Christmas Gala Ball, which is much like the American Prom), the main Russ-festivites are in the 17 days between May 1st (Norwegian Labor Day) and May 17th (Norwegian Constitution Day). In those 17 days, nearly all Norwegian Russ dress in clothes that are in a color corresponding to the courses they've taken in High School (Red for people who are eligible to go on to Universities, Blue for people who took business-oriented studies (I think), and Black for people who took manual labor studies). I am a Red Russ. In addition to the clothes, which we wear non-stop for 17 days, we also have a hat, with a tassel. In the tassel, people are allowed to hang different things if they manage to do different stuff. The stuff you have to do to earn a thing for your tassel is usually associated with sex (for instance, riding the bus to school wearing only your underwear, which earns you the right to tie a piece of fabric to your tassel) or public rudeness (for instance, pretending to have tourettes through an entire class, which earns you the right to tie earplugs to your tassel). But trying to get stuff to put in your tassel is not all the Russ does. The 17 days are also marked by an insane amount of drinking, actually to the point that even the director of the Norwegian Breweries Union said he was afraid that the Russ drank too much on the news earlier today. The amount of absences in class also rise drastically during this period (I'm not in school today, too hungover from last night). Finally, there are the Russ-cars (or sometimes even buses), which groups of Russ go together to buy. The cars are painted in the colors of the Russ who own them (thus, ours is red), and given a name, usually a funny one, which is painted on the front of the car (ours is called T

I'm familiar with Russ... mostly through the pictures.

<3 Scandanavian girls

American graduations, of course, are more subdued affairs... since alcohol is (officially) unavailable to minors, you tend not to have huge drinking/sex-related norms. Sure, they exist, but not to the same degree. I'm sure someone else can explain better than me, I'm mostly out of the loop when it comes to people acting stupid.

We have schoolies week here. They usually go to the main cities (Gold Coast, Sydney, etc) and just party. Here in Queensland, there's free public transport on schoolies I think.. Dunno, I'm not old enough The alcohol flows, as far as I know.. our legal age is only 18. I heard at last year's schoolies, these girls had sexual relations with police officers or somethin..

The only difference between the red and the blue russ is that the blue once take an Economics course during their second year, while the red ones choose history.. and that the blue ones won't have to take a language course in their 3rd year. At least that's what it's like here.

Oh, and I'm blue, by the way.

There are also a green russ, but they are very rare. They're the ones that go to agricultural schools.. I'm not sure what it'll become of those people, but..

And I think that a good deal of those prefer to be black anyway, making the green ones even more rare to see. I've only seen two of them thus far, and we have an agricultural school like that, some kilometers south of our town..

You don't have to be a senior to do that after prom Lots of people do it, not just seniors.

Well, here you either have a grad party or a prom. Basically they're the same thing. The actual celebration itself is pretty plain, with the aim being to socialize and have a good time.

Afterwards though... Most people usually rent hotel rooms for the night, go clubbing and get piss drunk. Let's just say one of our teachers knew where kids could go and not get carded...

Apparently going to high school actually means something in Norway. My graduation involved a lot of nonsense speeches done by the class president while we sat in the cheapest cap

At my school, the golden rule is to act like a moron, get totally smashed and or high, drive recklessly around town, and be sure to peel out as much as possible.
