With the significant rise recently in topics regarding SMB3 hacking, I think it would probably be a good idea right about now just to have a topic with an FAQ/Running Q&A on hacking the game. And sticky it. That way, you don't clutter this place up with 1,000,000 different topics asking questions about SMB3... AND, if a topic were to get pushed down, someone might ask something that's already been answered. This prevents that from happening. Who knows, we may one day need a SMB3 hacking forum... but for now, I think an official SMB3 Q&A topic would be great!

Just What I need! Anyway, where should I set the pointers to my levels created from scratch to? I keep ruining my levels by messing up the pointer... |

Dahrk Daiz... you ever thought of just putting those in a doc and posting a link to the doc?

Easier to see them quickly from the topic than through a doc... Um, what is the address for how fast a goomba moves? I didn't see it in there... It'd be cool to make em super fast or slow... If you know what it is, anyway. |

Found and added. To save the trouble of searching again, everytime I update the notes, I will put a *** next to any data that's less than 1 day old, so you can see whats new and I can keep it in order 0x9368 = Left speed of many enemies 0x9369 = Right speed of many enemies That's what ya want. It affects others enemies, so beware. (edited by DahrkDaiz on 05-05-04 08:52 PM) |

There is two known SMB3 editors, but are on hold. SMB3 Level Discombobulator which is on hold and probably never will be finished and MARIO IMPROVEMENT 3 which is also on hold. I posted this becuse I know somebody would ask for a editor. I hadn't seen any other SMB3 editors... I hope somebody will make one someday thought. |

This hasn't seen much activity, but I guess it would be good to remind some new SMB3 hackers that I have 2 utilities out for SMB3. A level object TSA editor and card game editor. http://dahrkdaiz.panicus.org/util/vegas.rar (card game editor) http://dahrkdaiz.panicus.org/util/smb3_tsa.rar (tsa editor) |

How can you get fire flowers out of the giant question marks, as opposed to the super leaves? I've tried switching the boxes that product flowers and leaves, but it does not seem to affect the giant question mark boxes....

Change the value to 19 at 0xB6E5 (original value should be 1E) Note that the flower will fall from the giant ? block, since that block is a sprite and not a background tile. |

Thank you, but I'm afraid it didn't help much. I guess I should've specified, but I didn't mean those giant ? blocks, but the ones found in Giant Land. The ones that that can be used with other enemies without looking like a glitched mess .

Oh, sorry... So, change to 19 at 0x43B3 and you've got it |

Thanks: that works . And for another stupid question: where can I find that little dohickey that edits the items in Toad Houses and Hammer Brothers? I can't seem to find that anywhere....

Read Daiz's notes : 0x3B14B = Table of items used to create Mushroom House treasure chests. Some bytes affect the "all same items" mushroom houses. Meaning, if all the chest have the same items, then only 1 byte is needed to define the chests, rather than 3. The first 5 bytes affect these type of mushroom houses. The 3rd is for all Frogs, 4th is all Tanooki, 5th is all Hammer. 1st is All Whistles (never seen in the game), 2nd is all P-Wings (also never seen in the game).I believe these two are used for White Mushroom houses. The rest are 3 item houses. One type is 0A 0A 0A, all three anchors. This is the ONLY exception to the same-type house rule. And remember, the definitions come in groups of three. Example: The second set (bytes 9, 10, and 11) is 01, 02, 03, a set of three defining the Mushroom, Flower, and Leaf type houses. For item values, see global item table. -------------------------- 0x16190 = Hammer Bros. Item table. Here there is a big chunk of 00s and a few bytes that are not 00. The groups of bytes that are _not_ 00 represent the items you receive from a Hammer Bros. Examples are the first byte, 09, is world 1's Hammer Bros. item (a star). Next is 0D0B0C which is world 2's (music box, hammer, whistle) and so on. The item values are the exact same for the item values listed above. Note, world 8 has NO Hammer Bros. item groups. Instead, the items in the treasure chests found there are defined by enemy level data. When using the Help Sprite as a Hammer Bros. the item control is 2 bytes before the normal Hammer Bros. group for that world. The Airship sprite uses the one after that -------------------------- 00 = Nothing 01 = Mushroom 02 = Fire Flower 03 = Leaf 04 = Frog Suit 05 = Tanooki Suit 06 = Hammer Bros. Suit 07 = Jugem's Cloud 08 = P-Wing 09 = Starman 0A = Anchor 0B = Hammer 0C = Whistle 0D = Music Box This is used for things like Mushroom House item values or Princess gift item values. -------------------------- Is that what you were looking for ? Not quite what I wanted... oh well. Yet another question: I seem to have forgotten how to switch between the hilly graphics and the underground graphics. When I try to switch, I'm forced to enter the level with the "wrong" graphics set, with glitchy graphics: if I try to enter a level with the "proper" graphics set, I get a completely garbage level, or the game just crashes.

make sure you're switching both the gfx and the object set. The object set is in the pointer properties on the map screen.

Thank you... and yet another question. Sometimes when I edit the pointers on the map, they don't seem to work when actually playing the game. Why is that, and how can I get them to work? |
