In the end they'll start using some code like in Stargate SG-1 (I think)

Or we will have brother planets (Earth-2?!) =/

I'm sure by the time we start naming planets "Stargate" will be when the human race is extinct, because we could never find a livable environment other than Earth, and the Sun would be ridicuously close to us, thus scorching us to death. Anyway, I think there's plenty of God names to keep us occupied until that happens.

Actually, Banedon, Earth's official name is Terra or Tellus, who was a Roman goddess.

And as for Jupiter's moon Europa, I'm assuming Kitten Yiffer got confused by the fact that in Swedish, both the moon and the continent (which isn't really a continent, but I won't get into this here) is called Europa, and thus it was natural for Kitten Yiffer to assume that since Europa the continent was translated into Europe in English, Europa the moon would be the same.

By the time the sun burns us, we'll have had a few milliopn years to find either a new planet, or find away to create massive livable habitats, or move the palnet to safety... Or humanity will be extinct by then

I actually never knew that.

Isn't there a planet named Gaia or something? Or am I just hearing too many myths.

I heard about this Sedna today from my dad and I thought it was bogey. It messes up the mnemonic:

My
Very
Easy
Method
Just
Sums
Up
Nine
Planets

So where will Sedna go? Just sums up successfuly? My very easy super method? My very easy sexy method? Totally unbalenced

I will not consider it as a planet, but just a rock.

No, actually, Gaia stands for the fertility of the earth in Greek Mythology and can be used as a name for land or earth. People who believed in Gaia basically believed that the Earth was a female human being, and that her name was Gaia.

Yeah, that Europe.

I have no idea why they called an moon after an continent...

I see. I was pretty sure Gaia and Terra did tie in somewhere. (No not just in FFIX )

It may also be that you've heard talk about the Gaia planet from fans of Isaac Asimov (famous Sci-Fi writer who is most noteworthy for his Laws of Robotics). He wrote about a planet called Gaia in some of his books.

As for why they named a moon after a continent. The continent was named after a woman, Europa, who was actually not a goddess, but she did have a connection to Zeus in some way. So Europa was a mythological figure, as well.

Did you know English is the only Germanic language where the continent is called Europe, and not Europa?

Actually, Imajin, there are heaps of Germanic Languages. Some are extinct, but a lot of Germanic languages are still spoken today.

Gaia was used as "Earth" in SimLife. That might be where you heard about it. Picture a big female Earth talking to you and you'll get the picture.

I forget what culture Gaia originated in. Actually, wasn't Gaia the mother of Zeus? Or am I wrong on that one?

I think its cool they found a tenth planet, as knowledge of it will allow for increased accuracy in astrological predictions.

Hmmm, I never actually believed in Astrology? Is there some big scientific formula that is worth a crap that can show how it works? Or is it just faith-ish, like the God issue? Did you mean astronomical instead of astrological?
