Apparantly, them people over at NASA have found a planet-like thingy which they have unofficially nicknamed Sedna. So, any thoughts? Is this the 10th planet in our Solar system, or simply an overgrown planet-like thingy? Will Sedna bring any interesting answers to questions about our solar system? Will this even affect our lives in any way at all?

There were something about this on TV earlier today, thought being busy to spreeing/school work. I missed it...

The problem is... should it be counted as an planet? Heck there have been discussions if Pluto should be counted as one.

Well from what I've heard Pluto is a linked planet with it's moon Charon, that's basically a replica of Pluto itself, same size, same everything, both rotate vertically on their axis, unlike all other planets. Some say there just far off moons of Neptune.

There was always talk of Planet X, since a gravity pull discovered on one of the outer planets. However, Sedna is smaller than pluto, so it might not be THE planet X.

If it has a provable orbit, whatever... otherwise, well, it's just another big hunk of rock to me...

Probably it's the 10th planet.

Maybe if the question was "how many planets are there in our system, and how much matter is there in our system?"

Probably not. Probably won't affect anyone's lives for several generations, if at all.

there is still debate out there to even consider whether pluto is a planet or not...so, if pluto isn't a planet in the end...the sedna is one huge space rock...

but anyways, it seems that sedna could one day be a station stop for whenever man learns to navigate out of the solar system in a reasonable amount of time

Sedna.... sounds like some kind of medicine. It makes me wonder if anything useful can be found on that rock. It's smaller than our moon.... and it's a planet? I really don't know what this will mean.

On a totally, science fictional note, the book Stranger in a Strange Land, there is mention that the sentient race of Mars destroyed a planet, where the asteroid belt beyong Mars is. It does make you wonder, though, if such a thing is possible (no martians... just a planet being destroyed like that. If a big enough meteor collided with it, maybe...)

I agree about Sedna being a crappy name, but do we want another dumb name for a planet like Uranus again?

There were alot of theories on what Planet X where. Like an optical phenomen.

Now the biggest breakthrough would be if they find an planet with life... there already have been found severeal planets outside our solar system.

About the name. Sedna is the Inuit goddess of the sea.

Now, I don't see what this "planet" has to do with the sea. If it contains water, it's going to be frozen.
And Inuit mythology? NASA must have used up all the gods from the cool mythologies if they start using Inuit ones...

Nice.

But I'm going with everyone on this, it's just a giant rock sitting out there.

That's why I had the "sedna sounds like an planet" feeling.

Most planets are named after old gods. There is water on Europe but it's frozen... heh

We still need a planet "Gaia"... that's a much cooler name than Sedna

I'm assuming you mean Jupiter's moon Europa, and not Earth's continent Europe...

And most planets are named after Roman or Greek gods, the exception being Earth.
