Why, in the Sonic games, did they change Dr. Robotnik's name to Eggman? And when did this happen? I mean, he looks the same. This one guy said his name was Eggman in Japan, but that's still a stupid reason to change. This is a great concern for my mom, who does not know anything about videogames but has played Sonic Heroes for 20+ hours. |

Sonic Heroes is lame and boring. And they change tons of names in translations. Bowser->Koopa Or, the other explanation that his full name is King Bowser Koopa. |

I think it was because of copyright reasons or something... I dunno. I was never really really big in the sonic games to wonder about stuff like that. All I know is that it was kinda like that for Megaman/Rockman. |

Dr. Robotnik is Eggman Robotnik. They just screwed around with the name from the series to the Adventure games.

When the adventure series came out, the translators used Eggman instead of Robotnik, and when they learned he had been called Robotnik before, they made up the "Eggman Robotnik" thing

Japan == Eggman (Obviously, because he looked like an egg in Sonic 1) USA == Robotnik (To apeal to gamers here, since no one wanted to fight a person call Dr. Eggman) His true full name is Dr. Ivo Robotnik. The Eggman part, I think, acts like this: Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik And there you have it. |

I go with Cymoro's explanation. It's not a huge deal... they probably just wanted to have parity. (Wouldn't renaming Princess Toadstool to "Peach" be the same thing?) |

They shouldn't have. I think they changed it for the show on TV. Eggman is a stupid name if you ask me... Robotnik is a whole lot better. It shows that he uses robots.

Technically, they took both the American and Japanese names and gave them to the other side, leaving the US with Robotnik->Eggman, and Japan to Eggman->Robotnik. (Take note of the fact that the only of the old games to actually have text identifying Robotnik is Spinball. All of the others identify him as Eggman, or not at all.) Robotnik does sound cooler than Eggman, though. |

In the original European Sonic manual, it refers to Robotnik as "Eggman", I... think. However, the reason for the change was because in Japan, his name was Eggman, and that Robotnik was an American invention. When Sonic Adventure was written Sonic began calling him Eggman, to bring it in line with Japan (like the numbering of the FF games, Technically speaking FF7 shoudl be FF4). I tend to overlook it by assuming that "Eggman" is an insult of Sonic's. |

Even before bringing the "Eggman" name over, they acknowledged his similarity to an egg. There was an episode of "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" (note: The more kiddy of the Sonic cartoons) where Robotnik imprisoned a comic artist for making fun of Robotnik with a Humpty-Dumpty story thing.

That was actually the story behind him, at least in the West. It was repeated in this official Sonic guidebook thingie I still have. It also explains the creation of the rings that litter the levels (they were used in the machine holding the Chaos Emeralds), the idea behind the Chaos Emeralds (Kintobor was trying to force evil into the emeralds, or something similar...), the reason Robotnik is Eggman (the accident involving a rotten egg), and the reason there are computer monitors lying around Mobius (remote links to his hidden lab, or something). I am not nearly as well versed in Sonic history as Mario history though, so I could not comment on the name change. However, I do know that while Peach was never meant to be called Toadstool, they did keep Toadstool as her second name (so she's Princess Peach Toadstool). Which was nice of them. Bowser is Bowser and always has been Bowser in the West, although in the cartoons he was (King) Bowser Koopa. You can easily call him King Koopa and people would know what it meant, but it seems Miyamoto liked the US name Bowser and stuck with it. Glad he did, Bowser is just an awesome name for him. The Koopa Kids had 'Koopa' added onto their names for the Western release, suggesting that Bowser's second name is in fact, Koopa. Bowser Koopa. I'm guessing Cymoro has the name right. Hell, he may of been Ivo Kintobor in Japan too, somehow I don't think he was called Namgge. There's not enough Sonic information on the net. |
