This is the first time I've ever seen an ad that attempts to convince you by saying more than "You have spyware" by identifying a software application and its location.

Not only do I not have that directory on my hard drive, my computer's perfectly devoid of any applications (or dlls) I don't know about.

Doesn't this fall under "False advertising"? It reminds me of the G5 commercials they made Apple revoke, where they (falsely) claimed to be the fastest PC ever. But this is mmuch more misleading - it's completely false, while Apple could "prove" the argument (by showing their benchmarks with a "Dell configured by Apple") and Dell disprove it (by showing benchmarks with a "Dell configured by Dell" which anihilates the Apple's benchmarks in their own tables) - which led to debating. This is just outright wrong. I mean, the "You are a winner" ads have disclaimers, and other popup ads might be for "Spy cameras" or something equally dumb, but there are idiots/pc illiterates out there who will be tricked by a POPUP AD (like I'd trust a popup ad? Some people do) into buying and/or installing the software they claim to fix spyware, but actually is spyware/malware itself!

Ah, sort of like the pop-ups that tell me to download their pop-up blocker.

... Thank god my grandparents only use AOL for email. Then again, they did manage to install a bunch of shit.

Jesus christ, though... They would've been better off saying "WIN.COM" is a virus XD

I'm happy I'm in this room enough to glance over and dive in to stop my parents from poking into stuff of the sort.

Then again, they've been getting better at identifying things like these, thank god

Pft. This is the internet. You'll never be able to deal with false advertising. I mean, all those "penis enlargement" places would've been sued out of existence long ago..

I read an article on this a while back, on the logic of spamming... you can't go after the actual companies that are spammed, because they don't actually do the spamming. And if you went after companies just because they're spammed, then people would spam for companies they don't like in order to get them in trouble. The same probably applies for this spyware ad crap. They probably didn't make the ad, and hence can be divorced of all responsibility of it. If not, they're idiots and they could probably be hit.

I hadn't seen thoose ads in long time due to Firefox's inbuilt pop-up blocker. I think I also have Google toolbar for IE to which also block pop-ups.

It's funny with thoose, becuse they are usually inside a window. Isn't it suspicious when a windows with diffrent colours appears inside another window?

That spyware scanner is probably crap to. Thankfully rest of my family knows about thoose false advertising, so I don't get any spyware that way. Heck I hadn't got spyware in a long time now.

I can't say for sure, but these ads could be effective on the somewhat computer illiterate. (stupid ads for stupid people I guess) I don't find them humerous anymore, just damn annoying.

I get those all the time. They almost, ALMOST, fooled me the first time.

Actually, given that this is the same guy who posted a thread about internet stupidity, I'm actually surprisedthat you didn't know that something like this exists, and that people actually fall for it.

Did anyone get one that imitates the "blue screen of death"?

I like the ones that tell me my IP address and try to scare me with that. Then they assert that my comp has "indecent content that could hurt my reputation", when in fact I'm on a university lab computer whose files are wiped every two days.

When I still used IE some time ago, I liked the pop up windows in a DOS window style which wanted to tell me I should download the newest virus scanner for free
And inside the window was a clickable "Download!" button ... just seeing a click-button in a DOS-window is weird (unless it is inside a game) and makes me laugh

The real stupid part in this is that it has "detected" spyware but wants you to download a scanner to scan and find the spyware. The popup also gives an "option" of deleting it directly, why download the scanner if you could just click in the popup? Besides, AdAware owns their pants.

ONO! My computer changed its own template for little messages like this, and now my computer is telling me to download stuff! I MUST download this if there's spyware...

Yea, anyone who clicks that... *bursts out laughing*

How does an online scanner detect spyware on your computer?

And what happens when you click the more info buttons? Links to their spyware download?

The "scanner" ad is really a piece of spyware itself. Therefore, the fact it can advertise to you means you have spyware. It's analogous to a burgler breaking into your house and then leaving ads for a home security system: "Your house is vulnerable to burglers!"

This hasn't happened too often yet, but I love it when I get pop-up "dialogs" in Windows XP's candy-colored bubble interface. Never mind the fact I'm using plain old gray Win98.

I guess ads like that are like those spams you get addressed to "Mary," even though your real name is Aloysius or something else totally different. They're just waiting until the ad hits a computer with the same color scheme. I'm still waiting for the day I see a Macintosh-styled pop-up...

Heh. I've gotten a couple of spam e-mails in the past from anti-spam websites, "demonstrating how easy it was to get my address." Way to practice what you preach, idiots.

I've gotten emails telling me how to "increase my cup size".... Um... you kinda wonder... if they'd take the time to send you a spam mail, they'd bother perhaps finding out what gender you were.

I don't even use e-mail anymore unless compelled to (such as to sign up for something), and I've gotten very few pop-ups since I ditched IE a couple years ago. it's not even an issue anymore, with me anyway.

I get those kind of pop-ups all the time. They always say "Write down this site, open it in your browser, and download our software. DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW! YOU WILL NOT BE TAKEN TO THE SITE OTHERWISE! Write down the site and go to it." VEERRRRRRYYYY annoying.

It's always rather funny to see ads using the default Win98/XP skin when I'm using a custom one. I've also seen a few that were exact copies of Norton's firewall alert screens, claiming that a hacker is attacking from IP 127.0.0.1 and you should click here to stop it.
I also occasionally get those "worried about having a small diiiicky?" spams. That's always good for a laugh. You're asking the wrong person, bub.

[edit] "Grow Ur Little Small Dic-Diick Now tantrism menstrual". Nice wording. *insert penis joke here*
