Then read this. I just came across it. As you might expect with *me* typing about 'subcultures', bam, the first thing that comes into your mind is most likely 'furries'. Well, if you know me, anyway...

...And you'd be right. Ha!! But it's more than that. Personally I find this sort of thing facinating. I mean, the whole 'way of life' thing. And what is 'normal'. And what is a 'subculture'.

http://www.furcentral.net/viewcomments.asp?articleid=93&show=50

Some of my favourite posts on the subject are halfway down the page, and I've only read a small section myself, so I certainly don't expect any of you to read much of it. I just find it interesting all the same.

Plus it's nice to see furry fans who aren't screaming for 'omg i love drawings of sexy furiez, don't u!!? '

Personally I've never defined myself as a 'furry'. No. As a furry FAN... Little crowbar seperation please. >.> Not a major difference, but... Basically I won't put on a strap-on bushy tail and call myself 'Nutkin' (whoo, Red Dwarf referance).

Anyway, it's weird, insightful, and sometimes vaguely disturbing reading.

...I also wonder if anyone can really be called 'normal'. I mean, hell, I expect there are plenty of people who would readily admit to thinking that Cheetara from Thundercats was 'a bit of alright'. I expect there are even more who would admit to far stranger things, and then there are those who wouldn't admit to these things even if you attached electrodes to their genitals. Of course, half of these people are 'in the closet' as it were...

In my experience I find it's the ones who are just sorta blase about the whole thing that really aren't interested, and those who are vehemently anti-furry or... Anti-anything, really, that are those who are deluding themselves. They see part of themselves in these people and they want to crush it by attacking these other people directly. I see no other reason for such 'vendettas'.

Well, excluding those people who are just making fun of something for the hell of it. But they tend to take a stab, then leave it alone and find something else to make fun of...

Unlike those people who *really* hate Dragon Ball Z and go to lengths to write whole essays on how it sucks. That's the sorta love/hate relationship with something that goes over the line to obsession.

I mean, I dislike DBZ but I don't get worked up about it.

Another example would be those people who first saw Pokemon, loved it, then moved to other animes and began thinking to themselves 'man, Pokemon sucks so much compared to these, aaaargh, must... Vendetta...'.

I've blabbered enough. Talk, respond if you wish, and keep the stupidness at a minimum if you can.

...It was about time I made a 'furry' topic. But this is more than just that, it's about subcultures in general.

I have been intrested in various sub-cultures myself, not just the furry-culture.
In the discussion I found post 37 the most intresting, I really want to visit Hot Topic and buy that stuff there if they sells it. What if it really become a fad one day...

Is it just me? Or do they mostly make fun of Fur-suiters?
And eh, well... I had some thoughts of disguising myself as a Cat-boy for those Anime cosplays. But I would never make it a lifestyle.

I have this site which actually studies the furry culture, and in a neutral way as possible to. Let see if I find it again...

*Scratches head about the whole matter* Interesting thread, you have here Fyxe...

Basically, you talking about when people get into fads, if what I'm kind of seeing here. Like with the fursuiters, DBZ fans and other things. I try not into get into that type of mess like that. I liked DBZ for a while, but I wasn't like... "Let's dress up like Goku and try jumping off the roof of my house." Now, that's just a little odd to me.

Really though, it's interesting why people seem to hate people who are fans of something. Does it truly matter to be offensive to them, though? That's what I confused about. I don't really mind people wearing fursuits, besides people at amusement parks are paid to do that kind of stuff all the time. Even though, I'm pretty sure they would look goofy if they did it on a regular basis. I wouldn't exactly dislike them for it. I'd just think they would be looking a little crazy on a hot, humid, summer day near the equator nearly dying in their fursuits, just because it's their subculture...

Oh well, the only subculture that I would consider myself in is "Sitting-at-your-computer- for-a-long-time" subculture. Though, wouldn't subcultures have something to do with stereotypes as well? Like, you know with gothics, punks, nerds, jocks, etc...

I watched some documentaries about furries a while back. What strange people.. but they're harmless, and so I felt bad that they're so reviled. It's like kicking a basket of retarded kittens.

You can think a subculture is lame without trying to make things miserable for those who are members of it. Most subcultures aren't obnoxious and obstructive... furries aren't.

Only reason I would be strongly anti-anything is if I found myself having a difficult time avoiding it. If a forum I liked became overrun with furries, filling the boards with yiffy threads or whatever, it would get on my nerves. Otherwise.. there's no point in bothering.

I can't say the concept of furri-tude has really caught my eye, but I will be the first to admit that if my girl started wearing cat ears and a tail, I would find myself having a renewed interest. I have actually myself have found myself becoming more and more facinated by Cosplay.

The only time I bash stuff that I know little to nothing about or just really don't have an opinion on is mostly to piss people off. Take anime for instance. I will yell at anime fans at my school because they are the worst people in the world and will react to the drop of a hat negatively. It's humorous to see people defend to their deaths how awesome Trigun is. I will merely walk down the halls then pipe up 'yeah, that episode (pull something out of my ass) of (insert anime here) really fucking blew! Anyone who enjoyed it should fall of a cliff'. And people challenge me to fights.

What can you do!?

Same with ziff on this one. Now, I like anime, although its becoming more and more annoying to like it nowadays. and I know some people who can be defined as crazy otakus. but I don't go and make fun of them for it. hell, They're freaking nice people. Such a shame though, on the internet they'd be called retarded and laughed off the face of the earth

I know lots of nice otaku. The ones at my school are just jack asses, and make it hard for me and my friends which are avid fans of anime, to be taken seriously. It has gotten so bad at my school because of these little...I wouldn't say trend whores because that at least denotes that these people have the capability to change when the trend dies.

They walk around with stuffed animals and talk through them to you. They bring sushi to school. They try to speak in broken Japanese. And they're pretentious assholes in class when it comes to Japanese history (90% of which they're horrifyingly wrong about). I think the absolute worse thing is when they so casually talk about how humorous seeing people die is. It is offensive because one of the cunts was laughing about how hilarious it is when people die in their sleep. Now, normally, I wouldn't be too offended. But I break down in tears because my aunt Helen had died just a few days prior. And after my friend had mentioned to the girl that I was not up for hearing about people joking about death, she turns around and talks to me directly about how I shouldn't be afraid of death and spouting out quotes from anime. 'like how Vash said in Trigun "generic quote"'. If my eyes hadn't been tear filled and I wasn't feeling really bad...That girl would probably be in the hospital.

Ouch. Sorry. If I actually had a life outside of the internet I'd console you further.

As for the topic at hand... subcultures, eh? Well, lesse, I used to RP, and I used to play pogeymans online, and I... Ummm... That's it. I suppose I'd be interested in joining a new one, as long as it didn't involve some sort of fetish.

Well, it's good to know that our resident Otaku isn't that bad.

However, I did find it funny that when our history teacher brought up Anime in class, everyone in the room immediately looked at Trunxy.

Doesn't keep it a secret, now does he?

Do you have any idea how bad wasabi stinks when these people make their own sushi out of tuna flakes? The least they could've done was brought tempura.

Well... There ARE a race of people... Uh, 'fursuiters', but they don't count because they don't look like furries. They look like people in what look like stupid mascot costumes. Think Trigger Happy Tv (if any of you have had the privilege of watching that oh-so-wonderful show).

I actually actively dislike these people. Why? Because they are regularly linked with furries and furry fans. They are not. They are SO much more different. They're more on the lines of plushophiles (don't ask...). Why? Because they look NOTHING like furries. *Points to layout picture* THAT is a furry.

http://www.fursuit.de/fursuiters/nightfox/nightfox003.jpg

THAT is some weird bloke in a stupid costume.

I like furries but I don't want to be associated with that stuff!! >.< Rrrr!! Go, K. Rool, kill, kill!!

However. If a slinky girl was wearing, say... Fake tiger-fur skintight... Uh, tights, then. Yum!! Example of something similar to what I mean...

Hehe. Legs.

No, but one can be 'abnormal' while still not belonging to some kind of subculture.

Yes, fur-suiters. Whenever I see something about furries in media, it's about fur-suiters. Or about even more wierd people... like this documentary about people who made plastic surgery to look like certain animals.

Last time I heard the word furry on TV was about some Square games "Furry fans will appericite *insert charachter name here*". That was at least not about fur-suiters...

Plushophiles... sure plushies are cute but I still don't get it why they do stuff with... yeah.

But I can honestly say that I find girls with ears and tails sexy , even if they aren't real. But fur-suiting just look wierd.

See, I find that remarkable that they even mention the word 'furry' on Tv. Over here, they never mention it, except for this one program that was specifically on them. That program did concentrate on the strange ones, but I get the feeling it was far nicer to them than some of the American documentaries. It was pretty soft.

I've seen the 'cat man', the guy who's used cosmetic surgery to make himself look like a tiger, or something. O.o'' Freakish.
